Ding Junhui delighted his home supporters with a 5-3 victory over Joe Perry to reach the last 16 of the China Open in Beijing yesterday. Ding, the 2005 champion, stroked in a long pink to seal victory after Perry had failed to obtain ideal position from blue to pink.

Graeme Dott, last year's champion, was in tears after losing 5-1 to Barry Pinches, the world No56 from Norwich. Dott, who has not won in 15 matches and may be relegated from the elite top 16 if he loses to Perry in the first round of the world championship, said: "I was very bad. I wasn't tired, I just played rubbish."

Stephen Hendry lost 5-1 to Dartford's Barry Hawkins while Steve Davis suffered a 5-2 defeat by Mark King.
