Manchester United have received a boost in the run-up to the Champions League final with the announcement that Michael Carrick has commited his long-term future to the club.

The England midfielder, 26, has been an influential member of United's title-winning side, making 48 appearances and scoring twice. "I am delighted Michael has signed a new contract," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "Michael has been outstanding since joining us from Tottenham and it is great to know he will be a part of this squad for many years to come."

Carrick joined United from Tottenham for £18.6m in 2006 and becomes the second United player this week to pledge his long-term future to the club, following Rio Ferdinand's decision to commit to a new five-year deal.

Carrick expressed his relief at finalising the deal before travelling to Moscow, and added: "Manchester United is a fantastic club and it is a pleasure to be part of this great squad. I believe this team will be together for many years to come. To win back-to-back titles in my first two seasons at the club is a dream come true."
