The referee who awarded Luis García's highly-controversial winner for Liverpool against Chelsea in the 2005 Champions League semi-final will take charge of Wednesday's final in Moscow. Lubos Michel angered then Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho when he allowed García's goal and the Londoners will hope there will not be any similarly contentious decisions against Manchester United at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The 40-year-old Slovakian is regarded as one of the top referees in the world, however, and is highly experienced having officiated at both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, as well as the 2003 Uefa Cup final.

He will be backed by Roman Slysko and Martin Balko, the same assistant referees who have accompanied him at his major tournaments. The fourth official will be Vladimir Hrinak, also of Slovakia.
