The Football Association is to study Didier Drogba's comments in his autobiography saying he wished he had punched Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic in the Champions League final in May.

The Chelsea striker was sent off in the 116th minute of the game for slapping Vidic and said in his book he now wishes he had punched the Serbian. Drogba wrote: "I have seen the match on video and I believe I should not have been sent off with three minutes to go. If I had punched him, I would have understood. Now I wish I had."

The FA intends to study the remark and the whole book to consider if Drogba has brought the game into disrepute. "We are aware of the comments and will be examining them in their proper context," an FA spokesman said.

The revelation is likely to draw certain comparisons with Roy Keane's autobiography, in which the former Manchester United captain admitted to deliberately injuring former Leeds and Norway defender Alf Inge Haaland. Keane said his challenge on Haaland was an act of revenge for the Norwegian accusing him of feigning injury three years before when he had ruptured his cruciate knee ligament. Keane was banned for five games and fined £150,000 by the FA but Drogba is unlikely to face a similarly heavy punishment.
