Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out Manchester United making any signings in the January transfer window other than the Partizan Belgrade winger Zoran Tosic.
United obtained a work permit for Tosic on Friday and the 21-year-old Serbian international is expected to arrive in the next week to meet his new team-mates for the first time. Ferguson, however, believes the other transfer business in Manchester will be on the blue half of the city.
"There definitely won't be anyone [else] coming here, but I'm pretty sure City will do some business," said Ferguson. "You don't talk about having all this money and then not use it. They'll have plenty of ideas. The fact that they tried to buy four or five players in an hour on deadline day [in September] gives you an indication of what they want to do."
Ferguson will be unable to call on Cristiano Ronaldo in tomorrow's Carling Cup quarter-final against Blackburn Rovers following his red card at City on Sunday. He was probably not going to use the Portugal forward anyway, preferring to play a team largely of reserve and fringe players. Paul Scholes, fit again after a knee operation, has an outside chance of being involved.
As for Ronaldo's confirmation as European footballer of the year, Ferguson said: "We are very proud. Manchester United have been waiting for this for 40 years. His award is beyond all possible dispute … and his best years are all ahead of him."
He added: "In life, you have two categories of people. Those who reach their goal and go to bed saying 'I made it', and the other ones who are driven by will, desire. These ones, when they win the trophy, they say 'I go on.' Ronaldo has that sparkle in himself."
