McGuire sees off Burnett in repeat of widely-scrutinised match-up

Stephen McGuire beat Jamie Burnett 10-5 in their world championship first-round match at the Crucible last night in a match keenly observed after McGuire had beaten his fellow Glaswegian by the widely backed score of 9-3 in the UK Championship last year.

December's match provoked a referral to the gambling commission which has been passed to Strathclyde police, who have been conducting interviews in the last few days. Burnett declined to comment on the matter last night, saying only that he felt "no more pressure than usual" and that he had "enjoyed the game in a fantastic atmosphere – Stephen was just too good."

McGuire, the No2 seed here, performed impressively, making breaks of 98, 96, 101, 122, 79 and 127. Burnett, whose highest was 79, fought it out to the end, winning two of the last four frames against very high quality opposition.
