A miserable week for Arsenal has taken another turn for the worse after Uefa decided to take action against the club for the behaviour of their supporters during the Champions League tie against Manchester United at the Emirates stadium on Tuesday.

Uefa is likely to fine the club after a number of objects were thrown from the crowd as Sir Alex Ferguson's players celebrated the first of Cristiano Ronaldo's two goals. A plastic drinks bottle struck Nemanja Vidic and, though unhurt, the defender was briefly knocked to the ground.

The referee, Roberto Rosetti, witnessed the flashpoint, quickly ushering the players to a different part of the pitch, and has recommended in his match report that Uefa's control and disciplinary department investigate the matter. The case against Arsenal includes several photographs showing the incident and Uefa will decide how to punish the club at a disciplinary meeting in Switzerland on 23 July.
