Adam Boyd marked his second debut for Hartlepool United with a winning goal in extra-time as the League One side won 1-0 at Coventry City to earn a home tie against Burnley.
Boyd, who rejoined Hartlepool from Leyton Orient in the summer, having scored 60 goals during his first spell at Victoria Park, lashed in a volley after 105 minutes to settle a lacklustre match against a weakened Coventry side whose manager, Chris Coleman, was forced to name five teenagers in his starting XI. A number of first-team players were away on international duty.
Nathan Tyson set up two goals as Nottingham Forest beat Bradford City 3-0 in front of fewer than 5,000 fans at the City Ground.
Tyson laid on the opener for Paul Anderson a minute into the second half, and then set up Dexter Blackstock for the second. Lewis McGugan completed the scoring. It was Bradford's second fruitless trip to Nottingham this week, four days after a 5-0 mauling by Notts County in their League Two opener. Forest's reward is a home tie against Middlesbrough.
Leicester City beat Macclesfield Town 2-0 at Moss Rose. An audacious backheel from the French striker Dany N'Guessan set the Championship side on their way after they had dominated the first half but failed to convert any of their many chances. The breakthrough came after 58 minutes when N'Guessan seized on a fluffed clearance to score from eight yards.
Matt Fryatt sealed the win for Leicester with a spectacular finish in the 73rd minute, winning a race with the centre-back Paul Morgan before turning inside the defender and cracking a left-foot drive in off the post and crossbar. Leicester have been drawn away at Preston North End in the next round.
The picks of the third-round ties drawn tonight include Tottenham Hotspur's visit to Doncaster Rovers, as Harry Redknapp's side seek a third consecutive Carling Cup final appearance. Spurs lost last season's final to Manchester United, having beaten Chelsea at Wembley 12 months earlier.
Port Vale have been rewarded for their win over Sheffield United with a tie against Sheffield Wednesday, while Manchester City will travel to Crystal Palace.
The Huddersfield Town manager, Lee Clark, will return to the north-east for a match against his former club, Newcastle United, while at Upton Park, West Ham United will play Millwall.
Sunderland travel to Norwich City, now of League One, in a rerun of the 1985 final, which the East Anglian side won 1-0. Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers face short trips to Blackpool and Tranmere Rovers respectively.
