Wales' lock Alun Wyn Jones has been ruled out of the rest of the Six Nations due to an operation on his elbow that is scheduled to take place tomorrow and keep him out of action for six to 12 weeks.
Jones picked up the injury after around 36 minutes of Wales' dramatic victory over Scotland on Saturday, but after being assessed and treated at half-time he was able to continue and make a full contribution for the remainder of the game.
However, further investigation has revealed a chipped bone and ligament damage, which means surgical intervention is the best course of action.
"Alun Wyn experienced some swelling to the joint the day after the game and was sent for a scan. After receiving those results and after further consultation with surgeons today, it has been concluded that the chipped bone needs to be removed and the ligament to be repaired in order to ensure a stable joint," the Wales physio Mark Davies said. "The necessary period of recovery will be six to 12 weeks, ruling him out of the rest of the Six Nations and allowing him to target an end-of-season return for the Ospreys."
Jones will not be replaced in the squad, meaning the head coach Warren Gatland now has 34 players to prepare to face France at the Millennium Stadium a week on Friday.
The announcement caps a forgettable campaign for the player, who was blamed by Gatland for Wales' defeat by England after his sin-binning allowed the home side to score 17 points.
