Jonny Wilkinson will tomorrow join up with the England squad after an X-ray and scan on the back injury he suffered playing for Toulon against Cardiff Blues last Sunday revealed he had suffered a haematoma but no break.
Toulon feared he had suffered a cracked rib after being tackled heavily, but the tests in France this afternoon revealed a bruised muscle with some internal bleeding as well as a slight strain.
"The important thing is that there was no break," said Tom Whitford, the Toulon team manager. "Our doctor has said that he should not take any contact for two weeks, but when Jonny joins up with England he will be assessed by their medical team and they may come to a different conclusion.
"All we expect is that they look after him and do not take any risks. Jonny is their responsibility now, but he is our player."
England leave for their five-match tour to Australia and New Zealand on Monday. Their first game, against Australian Barbarians, is on 8 June, which is within the time when the Toulon doctor recommended Wilkinson take no contact, with the first Test being played four days later.
