Ryan Giggs is expected to rely on the experience of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in central defence for his first Manchester United team, when Norwich City visit for Saturday's evening kick-off.
Despite Vidic's decision to leave the club in the close season and Ferdinand's United career being in the balance, Giggs is understood to want the veteran pairing to start in the first of his four matches in charge as the interim manager.
Vidic, 32, made the decision to leave the club earlier in the season, while the 35-year-old Ferdinand had appeared to be following, as Giggs's predecessor, David Moyes, had yet to offer him a fresh one-year deal.
However, with Giggs having only a short spell to impress the hierarchy, the Welshman is intent on a pragmatic approach as he tries to take a maximum 12 points and give United a lift at the close of a disappointing campaign.
The defending champions are seventh, 23 points behind the leaders, Liverpool.
