Manchester United are waiting to discover the extent of Marcos Rojo’s injury, with initial examinations suggesting it may be a minor thigh complaint.

The Argentinian suffered the injury in training on Saturday prior to the visit of Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Rojo’s late pull-out of the squad meant Phil Jones was pressed into action despite not yet being 100% match-fit. While the English defender, who had not played for nearly two months, managed 89 minutes before being replaced, there is hope that Rojo can recover to be available for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa.

Asked about Rojo following the 3-0 win over Liverpool, Louis van Gaal said: “He felt something and I didn’t want to take a risk. We have to wait and see. I am not a doctor.”

Rojo, who also suffered a shoulder injury in November’s Manchester derby defeat that ruled him out for just under four weeks, is the latest United defender to suffer a problem, with Daley Blind and Luke Shaw currently unavailable and Jonny Evans and Jones having just returned.
