Final thoughts

Where do you begin with a game like that. The seven goals? The comeback that wasn’t? The sending off? The A-League’s hottest striker? The A-League’s hottest new striker? It would be slightly churlish of me to suggest it wasn’t a classic for the purists, but with so much entertainment to be had, who cares?

For the Wanderers, a disappointing night was somewhat offset by the discovery of Bulut who scored the game’s best two goals and will only get better from here. An instant Red and Black Bloc hero is born. But the mystery of why the Wanderers can’t replicate their Champions League heroics in the A-League continues to baffle.

As for Sydney, this game only confirmed what we already know: they’re irresistible in front of goal, and irresponsible when defending it. As entertaining as it is to see their goal-fests every week, Graham Arnold must be seething at the lack of bark in defence. If he can sort that out before the finals, they will be a serious threat.

That’s all from me anyway folks, catch you next time.

Updated

Full-time: Western Sydney Wanderers 3-4 Sydney FC

And that’s it! Sydney hold on. Another cracking Sydney derby, if only for the goals.

90 min+3: More pressure from the Wanderers but Sydney are just about equal to it. Surely they’ve done enough now?

90 min+1: Another fine stop from Janetovic! Here’s that siege I was talking about.

90 min: Oooooo! A deep cross and Janetovic is in the right place at the right time again to save a close-range header. Was that the last chance for Wanderers?

89 min: La Rocca hits one from distance but it’s comfortable for the keeper. Still no sign of a siege.

Updated

88 mins: Taxi for Ibini! The Sydney man fires high and wide from just outside the box.

86 min: Still not much urgency from the Wanderers. They’re sticking with the softly, softly approach but time is running out and Sydney are on the ropes with ten men.

Updated

85 min: Sydney, not surprisingly, have everyone behind the ball - but Castelen still manages to break through. He fires low and hard but Janjetovic is equal to it. Good save.

Updated

Red card!

83 min: Tavares is off! Second booking for a bit of a nibble at Bridge’s legs from behind. A little harsh maybe but it was always a risk with a challenge like that. Game on!

Updated

81 min: Over 19,000 in attendance tonight, but it’s the Cove in the corner making all the noise.

80 min: That’s 19 goals in five games for Sydney FC. If they can just sort out their defensive issues they’ll be serious contenders.

78 min: Sydney seem quite happy for the Wanderers to pass it around in defence, it’s when they’re pressing forward that they’ve struggled. Odd tactics from Popovic’s men.

76 min: Golec off for Galloway. The Wanderers need to go up a gear again. Bafflingly, they seemed to be deliberately slowing things down before the goal, just when they had all the momentum.

GOAL! Wanderers 3-4 Sydney FC

74 min: Antonis the super sub! Great first touch from a fluffed clearance and he fires into the bottom corner. Sky Blues back on top.

Updated

70 min: Slightly better from the men in sky blue but just as they seem to be applying some pressure, the Wanderers win it back and race up the other end. Twenty minutes with no goals makes this officially a “lull”.

Updated

68 min: Sure enough here he comes. Antonis on for Naumoff.

67min: Despite those stoppages, it’s still the Wanderers on top. Antonis starts to warm-up on the sidelines.

66 min: Grant on for Ryall.

65 min: A needless free-kick from Takahagi gives Sydney some breathing space. The Wanderers were just starting to turn the screw.

64 min: Janko off for Smeltz. Will he claim a hat-trick? Some debate over who should get the credit for Sydney’s first.

Updated

63 min: All too easy for the Wanderers at the minute. It would be interesting to see the possession stats for the last 10 minutes. Sydney have hardly touched it.

61 min: Plenty of talk about whether smoke from a flare obstructed Janjetovic’s view for the equaliser. Didn’t look too bad to me.

57 min: And sure enough he comes off seconds later. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, the way he’s grinning suggests not.

56 min: Naumoff heads the ball straight at Covic. Not sure what’s happening to Bulut, but the two-goal hero looks spent. He’s hobbling around.

Updated

54 min: Graham Arnold must be tearing what’s left of his hair out. How have Sydney let this one slip out of their hands?

Updated

GOAL! Wanderers 3-3 Sydney FC

52 min: Bulut again! The debutant fires home from just outside the area and it’s all square again. Crazy stuff.

49 min: Actually, it is a little less “gung-ho” this half. Bit more caution on show. The Wanderers passing it around well... although they did that when it was 0-0 in the first-half.

47 min: Two minutes in and no goals. It’s positively sedate.

Second-half

Peeeeep! And we’re off again. No extra tifo murals, although Bulut’s arm has almost as much ink on it.

Half-time: Wanderers 2-3 Sydney FC

Well that escalated quickly. It’s raining goals in Sydney’s west. Come back after the break for even more*.

*Disclaimer: second half may not contain goals.

Updated

45 min: Last corner of the half for Sydney FC. It sails into the box and an unmarked Jurman heads it wide from eight yards. Poor defending, poor finishing.

Updated

43 min: Well no one saw that coming. This game looked dead and buried about 20 minutes ago.

Updated

GOAL! Wanderers 2-3 Sydney FC

42 min: Bulut with a bullet! Superb counter-attack. Rukavytsya breaks free, pulls it back for Bulut who fires past Janjetovic. Best goal so far.

Updated

41 min: The resulting free-kick is swung into the box but it’s an easy one for Covic.

Updated

40 min: Tanaka booked somewhat harshly for jostling Naumoff.

38 min: Four goals but it’s hardly been a derby classic. Bit scrappy from both teams but the Sky Blues have been clinical where it counts.

35 min: Well if nothing else that goal has livened the crowd up. Much more noise from the Red and Black Bloc - although it’s possible they were just putting the finishing touches to another giant cartoon beforehand.

GOAL! Wanderers 1-3 Sydney FC

32 min: La Rocca finishes from close range after a header across goal from Hamill. A glimmer of hope for the Wanderers.

29 min: For a second there I thought I saw some flames coming out of Popovic’s head -but it was just a Hungry Jack’s advert going across the top of the screen.

Updated

27min: OOOOoooo! Should have been four. Brosque puts Naumoff clean through but a poor first touch takes him too far left and he can’t get his shot on target. The Wanderers defence have gone, erm, wandering.

GOAL! Wanderers 0-3 Sydney FC

23 min: What’s going on Wanderers!? It’s Janko again. Hamill loses his man after a hopeful ball forward from Ryall and Janko slots home from close-range. Bafflingly bad defending from the Wanderers.

Updated

19 min: Somewhat optimistic appeals for a handball/penalty from the Wanderers players and fans. Despite plenty of possession, it’s the Sky Blues who look the most threatening. Every time they go forward it feels like something’s going to happen.

GOAL! Wanderers 0-2 Sydney FC

18 min: A poacher’s goal from Janko, poking home after some goalmouth confusion.

13 min: Sydney will be pleased they’ve quietened the crowd although the Wanderers have responded well. Another free-kick from 30 yards goes over Janjetovic’s bar.

GOAL! Wanderers 0-1 Sydney FC

9 mins: Janko somehow shoehorns it in off the keeper with a scuffed header! Covic hasn’t had the best of starts but he was a little unlucky there. The big Austrian’s header hits the woodwork, it bounces back on to Covic’s arm and goes in. Janko is on fire at the minute.

Updated

Smurfs? Hockey masks? Am I the only one puzzled by this tifo business?

Updated

6 min: Wanderers having the better of the early exchanges so far without really creating anything. At the other end, Covic fluffs a harmless cross into the box but Ibini is bundled off the ball before he can get into a shooting position. Slightly worrying for the Wanderers keeper.

3 min: Another set-piece for Wanderers. This time Takahagi tries to float one into the box... but he slips and it bobbles harmlessly out for a goal-kick.

1 min: Janjetovic punches away from an early corner. Not very convincing but Rukaytsya fluffs his second chance.

Kick-off

Peeeeep! And the ninth Sydney derby gets underway. The crowd are in full voice.

Wanderers line-up...

Sydney FC line-up...

Highlights from the last game back in November. It ended honours even, so I can’t be accused of bias...

Sydney derby

Pre-amble

Passion, emotion, tension; you can throw every “-sion” suffix you can think of at the Sydney derby, although admittedly “fission” might be stretching it a bit despite some explosive encounters.

The way the press has it, Tony Popovic’s world-weary Wanderers have parked their plane from Japan at the stadium, paused briefly to yawn and stretch their arms, then hopped down the departure ramp and straight on to the field for this evening’s game.

Meanwhile, Graham Arnold’s swashbuckling Sydney FC are coming into it fresh and in form, having smashed home 15 goals in their last four games.

But quicker than you can say “banana skin”, Arnold was fast to point out that Popovic left five key players behind for the midweek flight to Japan.

And Parramatta pedestrians beware if you’re passing under any high-rise buildings or libraries because, according to both coaches, form books will be flung from every available window.

“I think with derbies, and Tony [Popovic] has said it before, form goes out the window,” Arnold said. “We focus on the game plan, we focus on how to win the game and go out there with the greatest respect for them, because they’re Asian champions at this moment and whatever their position is at this moment, it doesn’t matter to us.”

In other words, it’ll take a brave pundit to predict the outcome of this one despite things being stacked, apparently, in the Sky Blues’ favour. And as this particular pundit is more cowardly than most, I’m keeping my mouth shut.

It may be a relatively recent rivalry but the Sydney derby has already become one of the A-League’s most intense fixtures.

Expect more passion from today’s encounter as we approach the business end of the competition.

Richard Gadsby will be here shortly to catch every moment of the game at Pirtek Stadium as Western Sydney Wanderers take on Sydney FC in what is sure to be an entertaining encounter.

In the meantime, here’s Paul Connolly’s preview of round 19:

The Western Sydney Wanderers’ woeful run of domestic form can’t possibly continue for another week, can it? Surely the sold-out derby in Parramatta is the moment Tony Popovic’s charges finally shake off the shackles and start clawing their way back toward the rest of the pack. They will be buoyed by their 3-1 win over Kashima Antlers in the Asian Champions League on Wednesday evening and, though they only return to the country 30 hours before their clash with Sydney FC, momentum should be on their side. Added to that, all but one of the Wanderers’ competition points have come at home this season. But if they are to make real strides up the table, it will have to come from a lift from their recent signings. Yojiro Takahagi in particular needs to step up if the Wanderers have any chance. When you compare the impact he – or Vitor Saba, for that matter - has had to that of Shinji Ono, a fair amount of doubt remains. Having had a golden run since the club was founded, there was always going to be a time when the Wanderers didn’t have everything go their way. Now is that time. How long it lasts will probably define the culture of the club for many years to come.
