Amir Khan’s return to New York has been confirmed with the Bolton boxer fighting Chris Algieri on 29 May.
The news on Wednesday that his next opponent is the efficient but unspectacular New Yorker – at Barclays Center in Brooklyn – will do little to set pulses racing in the industry.
It is to be shown on Spike TV as part of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series, having failed to excite the decision-makers at Showtime.
Khan said he was “delighted” to be fighting Algieri, briefly a former world champion who was knocked down six times when he challenged Pacquaio in Macau last November.
It would seem Khan is acting on advice from Al Haymon, who also instructs Mayweather, in the hope that, having turned down £5m to challenge IBF champion Kell Brook, he will be first in line to challenge the winner of Mayweather-Pacquiao.
Spike TV, a home for laddish programming in the US, is coming to the UK, but did not received a rousing pre-welcome from the Guardian’s Stuart Heritage on Wednesday.
Top price for a ticket will be $250 ringside, not quite in the realm of the $100,000 being sought on the black market for a similar view at the MGM Grand on 2 May.
“I have happy memories of New York having made my successful US debut there against Paulie Malignaggi in 2010,” he said. “I’m delighted to now be fighting there once again against another champion in Chris Algieri.
“Algieri has shared the ring with some tremendous fighters and shown great skills in those fights so I know I will need to be at my very best when we meet. In all my fights I bring excitement, speed and skill and can guarantee more fireworks.”
Algieri had an unblemished record in his opening 20 fights but lost on points to Manny Pacquiao in November.
“I am very excited to get back into the ring and to be fighting here in New York,” he said. “Fighting where I won my world title just under a year ago is an added bonus. Amir Khan is a tested champion and is the match-up that I wanted. I believe this is a fight that will bring the best out of me.”
