We’re going to wrap this blog up now. USA win Group A on six points, Panama have two, and Haiti and Honduras one each. USA are through, but they play Panama on Monday, and they’ll want to put in a better performance. It was shoddy tonight. But Zardes and Johannsson did well, and Deuce was on the money again. Thanks for reading – goodnight.
Well, I said it would be a procession, and that should be a warning: when it comes to predictions, I am a cretin. USA really struggled here tonight, and Haiti, with a bit more gumption in the final third, could have easily snatched an equaliser. Guzan made a fine save on Nazon, and Jerome hit the bar, but USA did enough. Just. Improvements needed.
Clint Dempsey: he the man.
Full-time: USA 1-0 Haiti
That’s it. USA are two for two in the Gold Cup, and they’ll go to the quarter-finals as group winners. They possibly just about deserved it. Possibly. Not really.
90 min + 3: Nazon’s header is over. Is that the last chance for Haiti?
90 min + 2: Dempsey is in the corner, wasting time. But Haiti come again, down the left, and it’s a scramble in the box! Hacked clear.
90 min: Norde from range: saved by Guzan. Time running out for Haiti.
89 min: Oh, Zardes was in! He beat the offside trap on the left-hand side of the box, and tried to go round Placide, but his touch was heavy, and it’s a goal kick.
87 min: Alexandre shoots from about 40 yards out. Does it go: a) wide, b) very wide, or c) absolutely bloody miles wide?
I’ll answer my own question: it was C.
Updated
86 min: Diskerud takes one off the toe of Dempsey, and it was the wrong option: he should have left it for his team-mate. No matter, because Zardes gets on the ball again and looks to cause mayhem. Zardes has been so good since coming on, but his ball into the box is cut out.
85 min: Fans streaming for the exits. Got to beat the traffic!
84 min: Haiti clear the corner, and stream forward with Louis, who’s really impressed since coming on. Guerrier can’t quite get on the end of his cross, though, and USA can take a breather.
82 min: Diskerud picks up the loose ball and feeds Zusi, who attacks Alexandre down the right. Corner USA, and a final change: Beckerman in for Johannsson, who has been great. Change for Haiti, too: Sony Norde is in.
Updated
81 min: Now Louis comes again, and has an effort on goal, which is blocked. Nine back for USA, and they hammer it clear.
79 min: Spell of possession here for Haiti. USA defending deep, but effectively. Louis, the substitute, who is about 5ft 7in but built like a tank, has a go from distance, but Guzan saves comfortably.
77 min: Drama in the Haiti box! Dempsey dinks a lovely cross for Johannsson, but he can’t connect with the acrobatic effort from six yards. Brad Friedel in the commentary box nearly had a fit there: a fit of ecstasy! And the Zusi went down, but no call on the penalty.
Updated
75 min: Now Guerrier is on the left, and again he cuts inside from the byline, but again his shot is wild and reckless. Guerrier has bags of skill, but his finishing tonight has been abject.
73 min: Kim Jaggy, who plays for Aarau in Switzerland, has really impressed tonight from left-back, and again he advances dangerously, but his ball in is just too strong for Guerrier. I keep saying this, but Haiti are very much still in it here.
70 min: The pace has just dropped slightly: maybe those substitutions had an effect on the rhythm of the game. Change for Haiti: Sebastian Thuriere on for Kevin LaFrance.
69 min: Flag up against Guerrier, as he looked to get on the end of Nazon’s cross.
68 min: Change for USA: Fabian Johnson in for Garza, and Jeff Louis comes in for Maurice. Earlier I said Jeff Louis played for Anderlecht; apologies, he plays for Standard Liege.
65 min: This has been such a sloppy display by USA. For every intelligent run or clever pass, there’s a dumb foul or an easy giveaway. Haiti still knocking on the door, so to speak.
63 min: Oh! I just yelped. Guerrier flashes a header at goal wide after another excellent cross from Jaggy – but it’s wide again. Another huge chance, and Guerrier did so well to get in front of Zardes, but it’s narrowly wide. Guzan didn’t move. Haiti should be level.
61 min: Good defending from Gonzales after Maurice had gone too easily past Evans. Then Nazon is called for push, and he smashes the ball into the advertising boards in frustration, and is booked.
59 min: USA’s attacking has been much better this half: they look much better balanced with Zardes in the side. But Haiti come again, and that’s a chance for Guerrier: Jaggy’s ball in, and Guerrier climbed high above Garza, but just mistimed his jump, and the chance was gone. They’ve got some skill and pace, Haiti, and they’ve worried USA all night.
57 min: Huge chance for Haiti, and Brad Guzan comes up big! Nazon slipped the USA offside trap as Haiti broke, and he was clean through, on the right of the box … but shot straight at Guzan. The Villa keeper did well to come out and block, but that’s a seriously good opportunity to equalise, and Nazon should have scored.
Updated
55 min: This is much better from USA, one- and two-touch passing, and Zardes’s ball in from the left finds Diskerud on the edge, but his shot is well saved by Placide.
53 min: Dempsey’s been quiet so far in this match, but he does have a knack for goals, doesn’t he? Good defending from Evans, dispossessing Maurice and coming sweetly away. Johansson is just offside, though.
52 min: Haiti aren’t out of this yet. Placide comes and just plucks that out of the air from Bradley’s pass, like a NBA superstar going to the basket. He makes it look easy! What a good goalkeeper.
49 min: Corner for Haiti, and Nazon wins another from Ream. Maurice’s ball in is poor, though.
47 min: Haiti had started really brightly, but Zardes suddenly got free in the box on the left, and he picked out Dempsey, whose finish was true. Klinsi celebrated that like a man possessed, as though he’d just been excused from going to his brother-in-law’s stag do.

GOAL! USA 1-0 Haiti (Dempsey 47)
Zardes’s pass, and it’s Dempsey again!
46 min: And we’re off! USA give it away immediately, and Haiti break: that’s well played by Maurice, turning inside Evans on the left, but his shot is straight at Guzan.
We’re almost ready for the second 45. Change for USA: Gyasi Zardes in for Jozy Altidore. It didn’t really happen for Altidore tonight.
Grantland writer Katie Baker knows what’s up:
Hahah that was like the crystal clearest string of expletives I've ever heard on a broadcast 😱 #usmnt

Here’s Jordi Comas:
@timmyhilleh wow. Who are these Haitians? Where do they play? Maybe some will get some looks?
— Jordi Comas (@jordisunshine) July 11, 2015
Yeah, maybe: Haiti have some talented players, and they’re located all over the world. Guerrier plays for Wisla Krakow in Poland, Placide and Nazon in France, Marcelin and Jermone play in the US, and Jeff Louis, maybe their best player but who isn’t involved tonight, is with Standard Liege in Belgium.
Haiti played well in that first 30 minutes, but they looked as though they tired in that last 15, and got lucky with the disallowed goal: it was clearly onside.
Updated
My hot takes: that free-kick from Jerome was absolutely awesome. And Johansson was definitely onside.
Half-time: USA 0-0 Haiti
45 min: Guerrier is dispossessed, and then Altidore is in on the right … but his control lets him down and it’s out of play! Altidore was well placed, then, but he let the ball roll over his toe. Drats. And that’s the half. USA have improved, but they were really poor for 30 minutes.
44 min: Johansson is bumped by Jerome from behind. Altidore is nearly in after Haiti go to sleep, and then Garza is penalised for a nothing foul on Goreux.
“Fuck you, you piece of shit!” shouts one lone dude-bro with a Massachusetts accent, to no one in particular. Welcome to Boston!
43 min: Zusi almost gets on the end of Johansson’s nod-down from Bradley’s long ball, but it’s slammed clear by Haiti. Haiti are getting deeper and deeper here: they’ve stalled somewhat after an impressive start.
41 min: Altidore has a go … but it’s just over. USA on top here.
38 min: Things have just started to heat up here, especially for USA. A few clanking fouls being committed, too. I’d quite like to see that replay of the disallowed goal – I think Johansson was unlucky. Bradley shoots from 18 yards, but it dribbles wide, like the drunkard at the men’s urinal.
Updated
35 min: The game suddenly looked stretched, and Bradley broke with purpose. He found Altidore down the left, and though Altidore took his time, his shot richocheted off a posse of defenders and Johansson slammed it home. Was it offside? It was very close – he might have been on there. Klinsmann is convinced it should have stood.
34 min: Now Guerrier is booked, for a late one on Diskerud. He’s been Haiti’s best player. Now Johansson has the ball in the net … but it’s offside! No goal.
Updated
33 min: Haiti have just been better so far. They’ve run faster, tackled harder, passed better – and they’re unlucky not to be ahead. Dempsey is clattered by Guerrier, but no card. Bradley tries to catch Placide off his line, and that’s just over. Well played Bradley – that’s more like it.
31 min: Carbon copy of Guerrier’s previous chance there, cutting inside the defender from the right but sending a shot miles wide. But Haiti have outshot USA 5-0. Half an hour gone and Klinsi’s side haven’t even had an effort. For shame!
28 min: Ream looks long for Altidore, but Placide is out quickly to claim. I like the look of this guy. Someone should phone Stade Reims and inquire of his availability.
26 min: That’s better from USA. Altidore combines well with Diskerud, and finds Dempsey, who larrups a shot straight into Bertin’s ear, who immediately drops to the floor. He’ll be OK.
24 min: Dempsey dispossessed this time! And Haiti come again through Guerrier, who shows very neat feet, but he can’t quite link up with Maurice on the left. Now Alexandre, who is meaty in midfield, is booked for tripping Dempsey. The right call.
Updated
21 min: That’s an excellent chance for Haiti, and it’s Guerrier, who has really worried Garza so far. He cut inside the full back, on to his left, but the shot, though powerful, was wild, and it’s wide. He should have done better. Again, though: as soon as Haiti win the ball they’re so quick to attack the USA defence.
19 min: Maurice shoots from range, but Guzan watches is fly over.
Here’s Matt Richman:
What on earth is up with this pitch, and why can’t USA adapt? We looked so confident against Germany, though we had some fortune against Holland. Why so shaky this week? It’s not like we got nervous before the World Cup.
Yeah, the pitch looks absolutely abject, as though they’ve just plonked down some great big clods of earth and hoped for the best. But still: it’s the same for both sides, and Haiti have adapted much better.
17 min: Chance for USA to counter the counter, after Nazon’s mazy dribble was stopped by Ream, but Johansson’s pass for Dempsey is overhit. Klinsmann looks as though he’s in an almighty funk on the bench: he just shot Garza a look of deep contempt as he ran past. USA have been poor so far! Like Tyler Gage and Nora, they need to step up.
15 min: Great work from Guerrier, after sloppy play from Garza. USA are so open when they lose the ball in midfield; with a bit more conviction, Haiti could have been in two or three times.
13 min: USA just haven’t found their rhythm yet. Diskerud and Garza try to advance down the left, but it’s broken up.
11 min: What a magnificent free kick from Jerome: he got it over the wall, but then it dipped right at the last, and just clipped the bar. Guzan was nowhere. A let-off for USA.
10 min: Ack! Diskerud is dispossessed after great work by Marcelin, and then Diskerud trips the Haiti midfielder. Good chance from the free kick for Haiti, about 25 yards from goal. Off the top of the bar from Jerome! So unlucky!
9 min: This ball is definitely rolling in a strange way, as though the grass is too long or something. Haiti try to go down the right, but it’s gobbled up by Garza. Guerrier attempts from long range, and it’s miles wide, but that’s promising from Haiti. USA haven’t really got going.
7 min: Guerrier tries a spectacular bicycle kick from a long ball from Jaggy. He’s nowhere near it, but that was some athleticism. Now Altidore, playing against the country where his parents were born, is called for a foul. He said he was raised in a “Haitian household, with Haitian TV, Haitian radio, Haitian soccer.” Plus he helped to raise $100,000 in relief after the 2010 earthquake. An excellent individual, Altidore.
5 min: Julie Stewart-Binks is pitchside, and she reckons the surface is pretty crud: grass has been laid on top of the turf that sits there during the NFL season, but by all accounts it’s cutting up pretty badly. Placide is out quickly to deny Altidore, and Haiti try to break. Slow start so far.
3 min: Zusi, looking almost the spit of Kyle Beckerman, looks to go at Jaggy down the right, but that’s a foul. Haiti smash it long and give it straight back to USA.
Eric Pop has a question:
Hi Tim,
I’m following your USA-Haiti MBM from an office at Stanford University, in what is currently not-so-sunny California.
Quick question – why is Geoff Cameron for Stoke not playing in this tournament? His omission seems odd to me, unless it’s a scheduling problem.
Yeah, Cameron had a good season for Stoke, but I think the club asked Klinsmann and the federation if he could take a break, and USSF acceded. They’re pretty well stocked in defence, USA, so they shouldn’t miss him too much, good player though he is.
1 min: And we’re off! Haiti immediately look to worry USA, but the hosts win it back and settle on the ball.
The bottom two tiers look pretty full at Foxborough. We’ll give you the attendance as soon as we have it.
Now time for the anthems: La Dessalinienne and the Star-Spangled Banner. Zusi is singing, and Jurgen, obviously, but Clint and Jozy just drink it in.
Rachel Crosby wins!
I’ll bite – Canada’s the only other team to have won the Gold Cup. They did it in 2000 and haven’t done anything since. Sorry, Canada!
Yeah, Canada. They’ve gone downhill, no?
The players are coming out. USA in white, Haiti in blue.
Fox Sports analysts’ style watch: Stuart Holden and Eric Wynalda look A-OK in their navy suits and brown brogues. Alexi Lalas’s trousers are too baggy.
We’re about 11 minutes away from kick off. Anyone got any thoughts? About anything?
I think under way is two words?

Gold Cup trivia: other than USA and Mexico, who’s the only team to have won this tournament, and when? Email me, tweet me, send me a letter: let’s talk football.
Some big transfer news: it looks like Schweini’s going to Manchester United. Read our report here:
It’s just finished between Panama and Honduras: 1-1. Thus, USA will qualify as group winners tonight with a win. They’ll do it. I’ve never been more confident than anything in my life!
Eric Wynalda on Haiti: “These guys will kick you.”
Analysis!
On Fox, Stuart Holden, formerly of Bolton, reckons this game might be tough for the USA. Maybe that’s why Jurgen Klinsmann has made seven changes – seven! – for this game, including the entire back line. It’s basically a 4-3-3 for the hosts. The Haitian midfield like a tackle, too: expect plenty of what might euphemistically be called clogging.
So: USA have Guzan in goal, Evans, Ream, Gonzalez and Garza in defence, Diskerud, Bradley and Zusi in midfield, and Dempsey behind Altidore and Johansson up front. Changes!
Haiti play defensively, but watch out for Duckens Nazon up front, who plays for Laval in France, and who nabbed a late goal to give the Haitians a 1-1 draw against Panama in their opening game.

Hello and welcome. Earlier in New York we had a parade; tonight in Boston we can expect a procession. USA play Haiti in their second Gold Cup match, and the hosts should win at a canter. Actually, maybe that’s a little unfair: Haiti are no duds, and they’re fast improving, but USA should have too much in Foxborough, and they’ll make it two wins from two in this tournament. Kick off is 8.30pm – join us live!
Tim will be here shortly. In the meantime, here’s what we learned from USA’s 2-1 win over Honduras on Monday:
