Galatasaray are closing in on Rafael da Silva following Manchester United’s expected acquisition of the Torino right-back Matteo Darmian.

United will officially announce the Italy defender as Louis van Gaal’s second summer signing, meaning the club can allow the Brazilian to be sold. The 25-year-old Da Silva, who earns around £65,000 a week and has a contract that expires next summer, fell out of favour under the Dutchman.

Although Da Silva suffered injury last term that disrupted part of his campaign, Van Gaal did not trust him defensively and used the winger Antonio Valencia as an auxiliary option in the position.

Once Darmian, who will cost an initial £12.9m, is officially announced he will join Memphis Depay as new United players this summer. The Dutch forward was bought from PSV Eindhoven for £25m after top-scoring in the club’s championship-winning season.
