PSV 2-1 Manchester United: Champions League – as it happened

Minute-by-minute report: Luke Shaw’s was stretchered off with a broken leg as PSV came from behind to ruin Man United’s Champions League return

Louis van Gaal laments Luke Shaw’s injury against PSV after the left-back suffered a broken leg in two places.

PSV 2-1 Manchester United: It’s not all bad news for Manchester United: the two bits of consolation they can take from this evening is that (a) they dominated throughout and (b) Manchester City have also lost, going down 2-1 at home to Juventus. Meanwhile back at the Philips Stadion, Hector Moreno and Luciano Narsingh bagged the goals for PSV as they came from behind to take all three points after Memphis Depay had opened the scoring for the visitors on his return to his old stomping ground. Tonight’s result has been overshadowed by a serious injury to Luke Shaw, who was stretchered off after suffering a horrendous leg-break. We wish him all the very best in what we hope is a speedy recovery.

Here’s the match report:

And more news on Shaw’s injury:

Full-time: PSV Eindhoven 2-1 Manchester United

PEEP! PEEP! PEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! It’s all over. I’m not sure how Manchester United managed to lose that match, but lose it they have. It’s been a disastrous for United, who have lost Luke Shaw to what looks like a badly broken leg and will leave the Philips Stadion without a point after allowing an impressively resilient PSV to come from behind and beat them.

Updated

90+1 min: Manchester United win a free-kick in the channel between left touchline and PSV penalty area, which they waste through unnecessary faffing. Nothing comes of it ... apart from another PSV counter-attack. Nairsingh rides Bastian Schweinsteiger’s tackle and finds himself though on goal, only to pick the pass instead of the shot and gift possession back to United.

89 min: PSV’s fans roar their team on, as Fellaini and Mata attempt to combine on the edge of the penalty area. Fellaini passes to Mata, who passes back to Fellaini ... nobody seems to want to take responsibility for shooting.

88 min: Manchester United continue to huff and puff, but to no avail. PSV are holding firm in defence for now.

84 min: PSV substitution: Locadia on for Lestienne, who’s been excellent. Man Utd substitution: Valencia on for Young.

83 min: PSV almost extend their lead, with Maxime Lestienne displaying great energy to go on a marauding run down the left flank before unleashing a shot that goes straight down David De Gea’s throat. The PSV winger should perhaps have squared the ball for Luuk De Jong, who was up in support.

81 min: With less than 10 minutes to go, Manchester United continue to dominate. “They’ve had so much of the ball, so many chances ... there’s a naivety there, it’s almost like they don’t know how to win. When you have that much possession you shouldn’t be losing,” says Michael Owen in the BT commentary box. He’s not wrong.

78 min: The home crowd are in high spirits, possibly a mite unsure how exactly they happen to be winning this match. Having gone a goal down, the jigged looked up for them, but having capitalised on some sloppy play, they’ve managed to score from a corner and through a wonderful counter-attack after being gifted possession by Juan Mata, who went on to miss a glorious opportunity to level the scores.

Updated

76 min: With Daley Blind up on an overlap, Marcos Rojo plays the ball out to him on the left-flank. Without attempting to control the ball, Blind attempts to send in a cross on the fly, but his wild slash sends the ball arcing high and wide out of play.

75 min: Manchester United substitution: Marouane Fellaini on, Ander Herrera off.

Luke Shaw has been on Twitter ...

It should go without saying that we wish him a very speedy recovery - he’s had no luck with injuries since moving to Manchester United.

70 min: With Guardado back on the floor rubbing his ankle, the crowd begin jeering because United’s players don’t put the ball out of play. And why should they? Jeffrey Bruma is booked for complaining about what he perceives their lack of fair play, United win a corner and there’s a pause in play as PSV make a substitution: Guardado off, Stijn Schaars on. Nothing comes of the corner taken by Memphis.

69 min: Guardado is fit to continue, but is forced to wait for over a minute before the referee waves him back on. He limps back on to the field and it seems that he’s soon to be replaced. In the meantime, Manchester United ping the ball around the hinterland surrounding the PSV penalty area, looking for an opening.

Updated

65 min: Manchester United continue to press and probe, while PSV continue to look dangerous on the counter-attack. It’s been a very entertaining second half. Chris Smalling gets booked for a foul on Andres Guardado, who goes down holding his ankle. There’s a break in play as the PSV man receives treatment.

63 min: Ander Herrera tries his luck with a long-range effort, but shoots straight at Jeroen Zoet. Minor housekeeping: before that hideous Mata miss, Hector Moreno was booked for a foul on Ashley Young.

Updated

60 min: Juan Mata demonstrates the first touch of a street-mugger to as he attempts to control a wonderful pass in behind the PSV defence just four yards out from goal. He hodls his head in his hands, pondering what might have been, as the ball trundles wide of the upright. He could have just side-footed that home, so I’m not quite sure why he attempted to take a touch. And what a terrible, leaden-footed touch it was ...

58 min: Far be it from to point my big finger of blame, but it’s hobvering over the head of Matteo Darmnian, who allowed Lestienne to go a galloping up the left flank before sending in a splendid early cross for Narsingh to nod past David De Gea.

Updated

GOAL! PSV 2-1 Manchester United (Narsingh 56)

And it’s from a counter-attack that PSV take the lead! Winning the ball in midfield, Andres Guardado galloped down the left flank and sent in a wonderful cross which evaded Marcus Rojo, allowing Luciano Narsingh to head home from close range at the back stick.

Updated

55 min: Manchester United are definitely having the better of this second half, but PSV continue to look dangerous on the counter-attack.

53 min: Santiago Arias gets the first yellow card of the evening for a foul on Ashley Young near the edge of the PSV penalty area. It looked a bit harsh to me - I thought he got the ball and replays show that to be the case.

50 min: Great play from Memphis, who gallops into the PSV penalty area from the right, pings the ball to Martial and continues his run to pick up the return pass. The young Frenchman plays the ball straight back into the path of Memphis, who shoots low, hard and straight at Zoet in the PSV goal.

48 min: Manchester United continue to dominate, getting the ball out wide to Young on the left touchline. He jinks this way and that, before attempting to get a cross in. Brenet relieves him of possession and alleviates the pressure on his team.

PSV 1-1 Manchester United - second half under way

PSV get the second half started, with the scores all square. Manchester United are quick out of the traps to put their hosts under pressure, getting a couple of crosses into their penalty area but without troubling the PSV defence unduly.

Replays show Luke Shaw should have had a penalty ...

While the player himself has far more pressing concerns as he’s taken to hospital for treatment on his broken leg, replays show that in the challenge in which he suffered his injury was a poor tackle by Moreno. He won the ball, but caught Shaw with his trailing leg and should at least have conceded a spot-kick, if not been sent off. I don’t think there was much malice, but it was certainly dangerous play.

Half-time: PSV 1-1 Manchester United

Memphis opened the scoring for Manchester United, only for Hector Moreno to equalise for PSV six minutes later, deep in time added on for a horrible ankle injury sustained by Luke Shaw in a collision with the Mexican defender earlier in the first half. The Manchester United player appears to have suffered a sickening leg-break and we wish him well.

45+5 min: Good work through the centre from Anthony Martial, who plays the ball out right to Ashley Young when perhaps he could have advanced further and tried a shot. Young whips the ball across the face of the six-yard box, but there’s nobody on hand to capitalise. Moments previously, Memphis had squared the ball across the face of the PSV goal, but he too could find nobody to get on the end of his delivery.

45+3 min: That was a beauty of a corner, but Manchester United should have defended it better. Lestienne’s delivery was superb, whipping the ball in from the left. rising unmarked in the centre, Moreno flicked his header towards the far post, where Ashley Young might well have stood a chance of keeping it out, if Daley Blind hadn’t got his head to the ball and prod it into his own net. I’m not sure who’ll get credited with the goal, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s all square at the Philips Stadion.

GOAL! PSV 1-1 Manchester United (Moreno 45)

PSV restore parity from a corner. Hector Moreno gets on the end of a whipped delivery from Maxime Lestienne and the ball goes in off the head of Daley Blind.

Updated

45 min: On account of the nasty injury suffered by Luke Shaw and the time spent treating it, the fourth official has recommended eight minutes of added time.

44 min: Shortly after Memphis had gone close to doubling his tally with another rasping diagonal drive, Chris Smalling shows great strength to outmuscle Maxime Lestienne and win the ball, advance on goal and unleash a shot. It’s a decent effort, but Zoet saves well.

42 min: That was a splendid goal from Memphis. Running on to a beautiful pass down the left from Daley Blind, he went around Santiago Arias to win the ball, before dumping the right-back and Jeffrey Bruma on their backsides with a nifty soft-shoe shuffle and then slotting the ball low and diagonally past Jeroen Zoet. He wheels away in celebration, answering the question put to him in yesterday’s press conference.

Updated

GOAL! PSV 0-1 Manchester United (Memphis 41)

Memphis opens the scoring for Manchester United on his return to the Philips Stadion and it’s a real beauty.

Updated

38 min: Maxime Lestienne skews the ball wide from close range and a tight angle after good movement down the left flank by himself, Joshua Brenet and Davy Propper. He probably should have squared that.

36 min: Manchester United win a free-kick for a foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger just outside the penalty area, almost in line with the right-hand side. Juan Mata curls the ball towards the near post, where Jeffrey Bruma heads the ball wide of his own goal off the shoulder of Anthony Martial. Goal-kick.

35 min: I’ve just seen a still of the aftermath of Luke Shaw’s clash with Hector Moreno and I think it’s safe to say the poor lad’s ankle is badly broken. If you’ve a strong stomach, you can probably find a picture of it on Twitter. Probably better just to take my word for it, though.

33 min: Daley Blind cuts in from the left touchline and wins a corner off Santiago Arias. Memphis sends the ball into the penalty area, towards Smalling at the far post, but PSV clear.

31 min: Manchester United get the benefit of another correct but tight offside call as PSV attempt to get in behind them again.

29 min: Joshua Brenet threads a little through ball in behind the United defence for Luciano Narsingh to chase. Offside, but only just.

28 min: Bastian Schweinsteiger plays a long ball from deep, in an attempt to pick out an Ander Herrera run from midfield. P{erhaps spotting that the pass had been overhit, Herrera halted his run prematurely and the ball sailed through to Jeroen Zoet.

Updated

26 min: With Marcos Rojo on for Luke Shaw, Daley Blind has moved to left-back, to allow the substitute in on the left side of central defence.

23 min: After a break in play of almost 10 minutes, Memphis takes the corner won by Luke Shaw. Nothing comes of it. As Shaw was wheeled down the tunnel, sucking on the oxygen mask as if he’d just been poisoned and it contained the antidote, Louis van Gaal went over to have a quiet “moment” with him.

21 min: PSV’s players ping the ball among themselves as Luke Shaw continues to receive treatment. BT co-comms man Michael Owen, who I think has access to replays that I don’t, seems to have decided he’s broken his ankle. The Manchester United left-back is wheeled off the pitch on a stretcher breathing through an oxygen mask. The crowd rise to give him a standing ovation. Good luck to the lad ... sounds like we won’t be seeing him for a while.

19 min: Play has yet to restart as a team of four medical staff continue to make Luke Shaw as comfortable as possible, with the stretcher bearers looking on in their high viz jackets. Manchester United substitution: Marcos Rojo on, Luke Shaw off.

Updated

17 min: There’s a break in play as the stretcher-bearers and medics tend to Luke Shaw, who seems to have sustained a bad ankle injury. Although he was brought down in the penalty area, the referee has signalled for a corner, which suggests the referee thinks Moreno won the ball. The reluctance of the localk broadcaster to show a replay, coupled with the reactions of some of the other players, suggests this is a particularly grisly injury. On BT Sport, Michael Owen seems to think he caught his foot in the turf and gave his ankle a gruesome twist. Here’s hoping it’s not too bad, eh?

Updated

15 min: Luke Shaw picks up the ball on the left flank, puts his head down and goes on a rampaging diagonal run towards the PSV penalty area. He goes down in the penalty area under a challenge from Hector Moreno and immediately signals to the bench for medical assistance. He looks to have injured his right ankle and the early signs are that it’s a bad knock.

13 min: Manchester United win another corner after good work from Darmian and Young down the right. Memphis raises both hands, apparently signalling to his team-mates that he’s about to mis-kick the ball and send it skidding towards the near post, where one of PSV’s defenders will be able to clear it unopposed.

10 min: PSV playmaker and midfield general Andres Guardado is in for a torrid evening if the early exchanges are anything to go by. He’s not been given any time whatsoever to settle on the ball and is finding himself under intense pressure any time it comes his way.

9 min: Ashley Young sends in a diagonal cross from deep, forcing PSV right-back Santiago Arias to put the ball out for a corner. Nothing comes of it.

8 min: Andres Guardado wins a free-kick in the centre of the park after being fouled from behind by Ander Herrera. The free-kick’s lumped long towards Luuk De Jong, but sails out of play for a goal-kick.

Updated

6 min: A chance for Manchester United, attacking on the counter. Memphis picks up a pass on the left touchline, cuts inside and squares the ball low towards the near post. Anthony Martial sticks out a foot and shoots weakly into the arms of Zoet from about five yards. If he’d left the ball, Ander Herrera was queuing up behind him to stroke home.

4 min: PSV left-back Joshua Brenet attempts a cross-field pass, but hoicks the ball into the packed stand. Throw-in for Manchester United halfway inside their own half. The ball’s worked back to Jeroen Zoet in the PSV goal and he attempts to play it out from the back with a pass to Hector Moreno. United press hard in a bid to pen their hosts back inside their own half.

3 min: PSV winger Maxime Lestienne pounces to win possession after a heavy touch from Ander Herrera gives him a good look at the ball. Lestienne streaks towards the edge of the Manchester United penalty area, where he runs into a metaphorical brick wall that is Chris Smalling. Crisis averted after poor play by Herrera.

2 min: PSV enjoy a bit of possession as the game swettles into a rhythm. GOalkeeper Jeroen Zoet gets an early touch as the home side’s players pass the ball amongst themselves.

PSV v Manchester United kicks off ...

Manchester United get the ball rolling in a packed Philips Stadion, playing from left to right. They immediately lose possession and Luuk De Jong wins a throw-in for PSV, deep in Manchester United territory.

Not long now ...

The teams emerge from the tunnel and line up either side of the match officials headed by Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli. PSV wear their customary home kit of red and white striped shirts, black shorts and red and white hooped socks. Manchester United’s players wear black shirts with orange trim, white shorts and black socks.

An email from Robin Fjeldsta: “The PSV first keeper name is Zoet, translating to ‘Sweet’,” he writes. “Is there a cuter name in world football?”

A word or two on PSV Eindhoven: The Dutch champions field the second youngest team in their Champions League history, comprised of seven Dutchmen, a Belgian, two Mexicans and a Colombian. Luuk De Jong is probably their best known player, a 23-year-old Newcastle fans may or may not remember for an unsuccessful loan spell in which he failed to score in twelve appearances during a six month loan spell during the 2013-14 season. He has already scroed five goals for PSV in as many games this season, having bagged himself a hat-trick against Cambuur at the weekend.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal speaks

“It is always difficult to play here,” he said. “When I was coach of Ajax and Barcelona, we did not win so many in Eindhoven. Maybe only with AZ Alkmaar. I don’t think there is a difference in philosophy between the Premier League and the Champions League. An away draw is always a good result but we will go for the win. The first match is very important to win ... for PSV too. I think the fans will see a Manchester United team willing to fight for their Champions League chances. We want to show that we are able to win matches at the highest level.”

Updated

PSV Eindhoven manager Phillip Cocu speaks

“We have European experience and will get more by playing matches at this level,” he said in his pre-match press conference. “Everybody is looking forward to this game. It is prestigious and the stakes are high – it is important. United have a lot of individual quality, they are experienced and they are a top football team. You can see the hand of Louis van Gaal. Our intention is to go for the win, but we will not be naive. Our initial aim, however, is to try to win.”

Anthony Martial starts for Manchester United

Having made such a good impression on his debut with that sensational goal against Liverpool, 19-year-old striker Anthony Martial starts up front for Manchester United, with Marouane Fellaini, who went a long way towards proving he’s anything but a striker over the weekend, relegated to the bench.

PSV Eindhoven v Manchester United match preview

Greetings sports fans. Manchester United make their first appearance in the Champions League proper for the first time since April 9 2014, a busy day on which they lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich and, in unrelated incidents, Toyota recalled over six million cars to correct various steering flaws and Spain rejected Catalonia’s bid for an independence referendum.

United go into tonight’s match high on the hog after their morale-boosting 3-1 win over Liverpool last weekend, the Champions League draw having guaranteed their new winger Memphis Depay a quick return to the Philips Stadion from where he came during the summer. United will have to make do without Wayne Rooney tonight, their striker sidelined with the same hamstring twang that ruled him out of the Liverpool game.

Playing in their first Champions League campaign since 2008-09, PSV have won three of their first five Eredivisie matches this season, drawing the other two. In their most recent outing, the Dutch champions went goal crazy against Cambuur, winning 6-0 away from home against the side from Leeuwarden. You can see the possible line-ups below, but we’ll have the actual ones just as soon as they’re available. Kick-off is at 7.45pm BST, but I’ll be here with team news and build-up an hour before that.
