It was a very well worked goal by Manchester United which won it, started off by Juan Mata and finished by Anthony Martial, the only two players on the pitch who showed great quality. The result leaves Everton in 12th, still yet to reach 40 points. Man Utd climb above West Ham to fifth, one point behind Man City. That’s it from me, thanks for reading.

Updated

Full-time: Man Utd 1-0 Everton

Anthony Martial’s goal proves the difference in what was a fairly drab contest.

90+3 mins: Herrera catches Niasse hanging on the ball and breaks forward, running down another minute.

90+2 mins: When Everton finally get the ball back McCarthy’s pass to Lukaku is anticipated well by Smalling and cut out. They are running out of time.

90 mins: It’s a slightly frantic end at Old Trafford with very little shape to the game. Man Utd have the ball and are doing their best to keep hold of it. Four minutes to be added on.

89 mins: Martial drives forward, again showing how threatening he can be when he goes directly at goal. He runs into trouble and passes to Rashford who pokes a shot which is easily scooped up by Robles.

87 mins: The January signing Oumar Niasse replaces Ross Barkley.

86 mins: Everton stream forward again. Stones finds Coleman bursting down the right behind Darmian. He slides the ball perfectly into the six-yard box but Lukaku can’t quite stretch enough and Fosu-Mensah slides to desperately clear. United are hanging on a little here.

84 mins: Brilliant reaction stop by De Gea to keep Man Utd in front. The ball bounces for Jagielka in the box who prods a shot at goal, but the goalkeeper gets a fist to it and beats the ball clear. Everton keep the pressure on with a free-kick on the right, set by Baines to the edge of the box for Cleverley whose shot is blocked by the rabble of players in his path to goal.

Updated

82 mins: Blind does indeed come off with that injury. Presumably Valencia will go to right-back and Fosu-Mensah will play in the centre with Smalling.

Updated

80 mins: Lukaku chases a long ball forcing Smalling into conceding a throw. Everton just don’t seem to have the answers for how to unlock this defence. Blind is down holding his right hamstring and Antonio Valencia is being readied.

78 mins: Mirallas passes to Coleman standing out on the right sideline, who is ruled offside when he really didn’t need to be. Man Utd have their foot on the ball and they seem quite content to pass it around between them harmlessly, a skill in which they are well-practised.

Updated

75 mins: Baines hooks a deep cross into the box and it’s easily gathered by De Gea. Some formidable tackles are flying in right now, but very few chances of note.

Updated

73 mins: Mata pulls off a lovely Cruyff-turn flick to Martial who scurries into the box. Eventually he’s crowded out but the flash of quality has buoyed the crowd again.

71 mins: Martial tries to pick out Rashford but the combination doesn’t quite click and the ball runs through to Robles. Everton pump another long one upfield which sets Lukaku in on goal, but the flag is up. Everton look much more of a threat in the past ten minutes. Then again, they are still struggling to create clear chances. Arouna Koné is warming up on the touchline.

69 mins: Lennon pickpockets Schneiderlin before touching the ball off for Mirallas. The winger tries to jink into the box and shoot but doesn’t really pull off either and United clear their lines.

66 mins: Mata dribbles in between blue lines before sliding a pass towards Rashford, but it’s a touch overhit. Mirallas’s first touch is a perfectly weighted lay-off for Barkley who can’t pick out Lukaku.

Updated

64 mins: Everton pump a couple of long balls forward but an isolated Lukaku can’t bring either under control.

62 mins: Kevin Mirallas replaces Deulofeu on Everton’s left.

61 mins: Old Trafford has cheered up a bit after that slow first half and Man Utd have picked up their tempo. After a foray down the right they win a corner on the left, and when it’s cleared they dash forward again. Blind slides a deceptive pass inside for Mata in the box whose cross into the six-yard area just needs a Martial toe, but doesn’t quite get one. Smalling is booked for a late tackle on Barkley.

58 mins: Michael Carrick’s day is done. He is replaced by Ander Herrera.

Woodwork!

56 mins: Jagielka climbs highest at a corner and powers a header on to the crossbar with De Gea planted. It’s been a good reaction by Everton.

A long diagonal pass is brought down wonderfully by Mata on the right sideline. He passes inside for Rashford who plays a clever backheel for Fosu-Mensah bursting into the box. He delivers to the backpost where Martial taps home with a simple finish after some sublime buildup.

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Everton (Martial, 54 mins)

A rare chance in the box and Man Utd lead.

Updated

52 mins: The corner comes to nothing but Everton win a free-kick on the right, which is headed clear for another corner. As the ball rolls out to the edge for Cleverley to hit, Chris Smalling rushes out to block the shot. It hits his arm but it would have been a harsh penalty, and nothing is given by Andre Marriner.

50 mins: Daley Blind does brilliant to stop Lukaku giving Everton the lead. Baines fired a low pass into the striker’s feet on the edge of the six-yard box, who tried to take a touch and then fire at goal on the turn, but the Man Utd defender managed to get a block in and deflect the ball for a corner.

47 mins: Fosu-Mensah looks to be playing at right-back with Darmian switching to the left.

Kick-off

Everton get the second half under way. Man Utd make a change at the break: Timothy Fosu-Mensah is on for Marcos Rojo.

“Is it just this mediocre match,” ponders Alix Sharkey on email, “or is Old Trafford always so quiet? Is there some kind of silent protest going on that we should know about?”

Here are some photos from the unveiling of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand this afternoon at Old Trafford.

Hmmm...

Half-time: Man Utd 0-0 Everton

Man Utd finish the half on the front foot with Martial squeezing into the box but he loses his footing, and the ball. Not for the first time this season, it’s goalless at the break at Old Trafford.

44 mins: Each time Man Utd work the ball wide they seem to have lots of space and the crowd let up a collective roar of encouragement, which is silenced seconds later by a sideways pass. It happens this time through Darmian on the right, who plays it inside for Mata, whose cross is gathered easily by Robles.

43 mins: Martial has been the most dangerous player on the pitch and he’s at it again, though this time he’s adjudged to have handled Mata’s flick in the box after a bright one-two with the Spaniard.

Updated

41 mins: Barkley intercepts a sloppy Carrick pass and has the time to pick out Lukaku, but overhits the throughball.

39 mins: Lennon shuffles past Rojo on the right and floats a cross for Lukaku but it’s at waist height and a little too tricky to control.

37 mins: What a tackle this is by John Stones. Martial uses a cute spin to make space before driving at the heart of the Everton defence. He bursts into the box and just as he goes to flash his right foot through the ball, Stones arrives to clear out man, ball and a couple of other players nearby too.

35 mins: Rojo drives down the left and feeds Martial on his inside. Stones blocks his strike from the edge of the box and when the ball comes out for Rojo on the left of the area again, the full-back is clattered by Coleman with a perfect tackle. Man Utd have a corner but after a bit of pinball a Schneiderlin header drifts wide.

32 mins: Lingard chases Barkley 30 yards before executing a nicely timed slide tackle. That’s lifted the crowd which was getting a little flat.

30 mins: Lukaku is started to get involved in the game, first chasing a throughball which De Gea pipped him to and then trying to roll Chris Smalling with his back to goal in the box. The England defender sticks to his task and three red shirts crowd Lukaku out.

28 mins: Man Utd break down the right and Rashford earns a corner. Sky alerts us via a swooshing sound that it’s 2-1 in corners to Man Utd. Take that, Everton! The corner comes to nothing.

25 mins: Rojo tries an ambitious volley from 30 yards. It’s the sort of shot that would be goal of the season if it flies into the top corner, but never ever does. Needless to say, the ball trickles into the advertising boards.

23 mins: Baines unfurls a superb deep corner which Lukaku clambers up to head back across goal, but no one in blue is there to add the finishing touch.

21 mins: Schneiderlin trips Cleverley sliding in just outside his own box, and referee Marriner awards the free-kick. Just to the right, 25 yards out, this is right in Leighton Baines’ wheelhouse, but his effort hits the wall and rolls away harmlessly for a corner.

19 mins: Roberto Martínez is very animated on the touchline. His side are certainly putting on a better show than their last Premier League match, the limp defeat against Arsenal.

Updated

17 mins: Oooof. Martial and Lingard work a confident one-touch one-two before the France forward unleashes at goal. It takes a deflection off Baines thigh and almost squirms into the far corner with Robles beaten, but drifts just past the post. Somehow a goal-kick is awarded.

15 mins: Action at both ends. First Cleverley finds Lukaku holding off Daley Blind on the edge of the box. The big striker tries a backheel into Lennon’s path but gets it wrong and Man Utd break. Rashford does brilliantly to keep the ball in play and tries a square pass to Mata in the six-yard box, but Everton players swarm around him and Stones clears.

12 mins: Everton win a free-kick 40 yards out on the right. Baines delivers the most delicious of parabolas into the box and Utd are a little edgy in clearing the danger. Deulofeu dribbles the ball back into the mix but after one touch too far Schneiderlin eventually hacks the ball downfield.

10 mins: The corner comes to nothing but Ross Barkley puts his side back under the cosh with an attempted pirouette gone wrong in his own half. Rashford eventually runs the ball out of play but that was a bit fancy from Barkley when a forward pass would have done.

8 mins: Man Utd settle on the ball. They work it down the left before a low cross towards Rashford has Jagielka scrambling it clear. Corner.

Updated

6 mins: Relentless high pressing by Aaron Lennon forces Daley Blind to concede with an inside pass from the left straight to Lukaku. The striker, though, manages to slip over the ball perhaps whilst dreaming of Champions League football, and Smalling pinches it back.

4 mins: James McCarthy is down. He seemed to twist his ankle in a challenge with Marcos Rojo. The Everton midfielder hobbles off for the treatment before a dainty hop-run back on to the field and should be OK to continue.

2 mins: Chris Smalling gives David de Gea a testing backpass which the goalkeeper can only spoon off field for a throw. Baines launches the ball to Lukaku who gets his first touches, wriggling away from a couple of defenders before prodding it off the pitch a little unnecessarily with a misplaced pass.

Kick-off

Man Utd get things under way with a long diagonal which Martial gamely chases, harrying his side a throw-in deep in blue territory.

As one of Man Utd’s greatest ever players leaves the pitch without fuss, the current crop get down to work. Michael Carrick and Phil Jagielka go for the coin toss and swap ends. Here we go.

Sir Bobby Charlton is welcomed on to the Old Trafford pitch with red flags waving and vast mosaic of ‘Sir Bobby’. It’s a lovely touch and he looks quite emotional. Up in the stands, Sir Alex waves a red flag with all the natural rhythm he displayed in his many years of touchline celebrations. The Sir Bobby Charlton Stand is unveiled to a throaty Old Trafford roar.

While we are talking Sir Bobby, here’s him briefly signing for Waterford United at 39, where by all accounts he ran the show.

Sir Bobby

Manchester United will unveil the new title for Old Trafford’s South Stand before kick-off today, which will be named after Sir Bobby Charlton. Here’s Sir Alex Ferguson, after whom the North Stand is named, paying homage to his opposite stand-man.

Preamble

Louis van Gaal is on the up. Winning the Manchester derby, Man Utd’s last game before the international break, breathed life back into his side’s wilting Champions League aspirations whilst quashing some of the talk of José Mourinho pinching his job. The problem, though, is making that performance happen all over again.

Each time Manchester United have taken a big scalp this season – 3-1 v Liverpool in September, 0-1 v Liverpool in January, 3-2 v Arsenal in February – they’ve lost again within seven days. This time they have had the international break to bask in Marcus Rashford’s bit of brilliance at the Etihad but the question remains the same – can Van Gaal’s side sustain more than just the odd moment of relief?

A similar accusation can be levelled out Everton. Roberto Martínez is another manager rumoured to be running out of time to prove he should be in charge in August. A place in the FA Cup final and a top-half finish would be a season reasonably well salvaged so beating Manchester United today, and perhaps again at Wembley in late April, might well be required to achieve that feat.

Some goals from the Premier League’s third highest scorer, Romelu Lukaku, will help Martínez’s cause this afternoon. Given his pretty categoric announcement while on Belgium duty that he wants to play Champions League football next season, Lukaku clearly feels his gifts have outgrown lowly Everton. A match-winning performance at Old Trafford today will go some way to pushing Manchester United off his radar too.

Kick-off: 4pm GMT
