Summary
A classic game of two halves. The first half was a fine ad for the quality of the A-League, the second half less so. Far less so.
After dominating play, Sydney deservedly took the lead in the 44th minute. O’Neill made a pass from the right, bound for Brosque, but the unfortunate Boogaard got to it first and sent it into his own net.
Interviewed at half-time, Sydney coach Steve Corica was asked what his side needed to do in the second half. “Score more goals,” he said. But he was not to get his wish.
Newcastle started out much brighter in the second half, but in the 74th minute Hoffman was sent off for kicking O’Neill while he (Hoffman) was on the ground. It was a bit harsh to get a straight red, but Hoffman didn’t complain too much about it.
Adam Le Fondre could, and should have ended the Newcastle resistance with three minutes to go, but his miss will go down as one of the howler’s of the season. He was in the six yard box, no one was on him, Jets keeper Moss was on the ground, and Le Fondre somehow manages to kick it straight to Moss.
There were further shots and misses from Le Fondre and substitute Ivanovic in added time, but it made no difference. Sydney have maintained their long, long run of being unbeaten at home to the Jets – the last time they lost this fixture was in 2012. That’s five prime ministers ago.
Sydney beat Newcastle
Final score: Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
90 + 4 mins: corner for Sydney in the dying moments of the game. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
90 + 3 mins: yellow card for Devlin followed shortly after by shots, and misses, by Ivanovic and Le Fondre. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
Updated
90 mins: some of the fans are heading for their cars or whatever public transport is available in Kogarah. But it’s not over yet. Four minutes of added time to come. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
Unbelievable miss
87 mins: Oh. My. God. How did Le Fondre miss? He’s in the six yard box, no one is on him, Moss is on the ground, and he kicks it straight to Moss. That should have been the end of it. But it’s not. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
86 mins: De Jong is off and Ivanovic is on for Sydney. We’re in the wind the clock down zone. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
84 mins: the one player advantage is helping Sydney dominate the closing stages. Newcastle have not beaten Sydney away since 2012 and that does not look like changing here. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
82 mins: Caceres hits a wild shot from about 40 metres out and skys it. A waste of time, but with just minutes to go and his side leading, he won’t be too concerned. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
81 mins: Sydney make a change, with 20-year-old Cameron Devlin on for Daniel De Silva.
80 mins: Le Fondre sent a pass into the box, hoping to find Brosque, but Topor-Stanley got to it first. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
77 mins: Ernie Merrick’s men have about 13 minutes to get something out of this game. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
Red card for Hoffman
74 mins: Hoffman is off for kicking O’Neill while he (Hoffman) was on the ground. It was a bit harsh to get a straight red for that, I think, but Hoffman didn’t complain too much about it. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
Updated
71 mins: good free from Petratos, Hoffmann gets his head to it and it’s wide. But he was offside anyway. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
68 mins: Champness is on for Jair. The Jets have 20ish minutes to rescue this game. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
66 mins: Sheppard on for Vargas.
66 mins: nice shot from O’Neill, but it just went left of the post. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
64 mins: De Jong was in possession in a good spot just outside the Jets’ box. And then he passes it out left to ... no one. Maybe he got a shout from someone who intended to receive the pass, but did not have the pace. Maybe. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
62 mins: birthday boy Glen Moss (36 today) can’t find a Jet to get the ball too, and so, in rugby parlance, finds touch. Today is not turning out to be the birthday present he would have wanted. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
61 mins: shot from Petratos from about 35 minutes, but it swerves right and wide. He might have done better there.
60 mins: the home fans look happiest. And why wouldn’t they? Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
58 mins: great ball from Zullo to Le Fondre, but he blazed it over. Got a bit too excited at the prospect of a goal, I think. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
57 mins: lovely run from Jair down the left for the Jets, but a great tackle from Calver saved the day.
56 mins: good run from Hoffman but he couldn’t connect properly with in and it was little trouble for Redmayne. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
55 mins: Newcastle have started the second half stronger than Sydney, but it’s still Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
53 mins: free given against Vargas for a push. He’s not happy.
50 mins: Calver took down Vargas. He needs to be careful. He’s already on a yellow. Petratos takes the resulting free and kicks is straight at Redmayne. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
49 mins: in a half-time interview, Steve Corica was asked what Sydney needed to do in the second half. “Score more goals,” he said.
46 mins: Warland takes down Vargas with a late tackle. I’ve seen people booked for that, but he wasn’t. In fairness to Vargas, he could have made more out it, but didn’t. The free comes to nought.
Second half starts
Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.

Half-time Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
45 + 2 mins: Vargas was unmarked after a corner but his shot went just over. And that’s it for the first half. I’ll be back soon after taking care of a WBBL story.
45 + 1 mins: a free from the left by Zullo amounts to nothing. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
45 mins: there will be two minutes of added time. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
Sydney take the lead!
44 mins: well, it was coming. O’Neill made a pass from the right, bound for Brosque, but Boogaard got to it first and sent it into his own net. Sydney 1-0 Newcastle.
42 mins: I neglected to point out earlier that Milos Ninkovic is also out for Sydney, with a cold. Their injury list is a bit of a worry for Steve Corica, but they are still controlling this match.
Updated
39 mins: Sydney playing some dull keep-the-ball passes near their own goal. Perhaps trying to bore the Jets into submission.
37 mins: another cross cum shot, with Moss palming away from Calver. It must be windy at Jubilee.
36 mins: just over nine minutes left in the first half and it’s still 0-0 in Kogarah.
35 mins: good comment from below the line, with a reader saying:
A couple of fine efforts from Le Fondre so far. What a great buy, I thought we’d miss Bobo badly but Le Fondre has been an excellent replacement.
31 mins: great counter from Sydney with Ugarkovic clearing off the line from a shot by De Silva.
31 mins: Redmayne makes a good save from a shot from Jair which I’m pretty sure was intended as a pass but got caught by the wind.
29 mins: another yellow card for Sydney, with Zullo booked for a heavy tackle on O’Donovan.
26 mins: long ball to Jair, who was trying, but failing, to angle it down to O’Donovan. Accuracy of shots and passing are not the Jets’ strong suit in recent times.
24 mins: yellow card for Sydney’s Aaron Calver for a nastyish tackle on Koutroumbis. Calver’s third yellow of the season.
Updated
23 mins: this has been a fine game so far, and a good advertisement for the A-League.
19 mins: super save by Moss from Le Fondre. It was headed into the top right corner, but Moss got a hand to it at full stretch.
18 mins: Boogaard denies Brosque a shooting chance, but you get the feeling he will have more chances to come.
16 mins: Newcastle have settled down now and are giving as good as they get, while Sydney’s initial tempo has slowed down.
14 mins: Tratt’s substitution turns out to be a groin injury, which he initially aggravated during the warm up.
12 mins: a great move from the Jets sees O’Donovan with the ball in the box, but Redmayne, well off his line, did enough to interrupt him and a shot into the side netting results.
11 mins: the pitch at Kogarah has quite a few dry patches. That’ll happen when you play summer football in the driest continent on the planet.
10 mins: it’s all Sydney at the moment. It looks very much like their riding orders were to score early.
8 mins: Brosque has a shot from within the box but it just crashes into Topor-Stanley and the danger is averted.
7 mins: I’m not sure what happened there, but Jacob Tratt is off and Ben Warland is on. Very bad luck for Tratt there, whatever happened.
6 mins: Tratt makes a good run down the right, gets the ball to Le Fondre, who wastes it with an odd backheel.
4 mins: some nice work from Brosque on the left, but it comes to nothing ultimately. Jets stringing a few passes together now.
2 mins: Le Fondre has a good early shot from the left, letting the Jets know who’s boss. Good save from Moss.
The Jets are playing in their third choice black kit. An odd choice, given the heat, though it’s not as muggy as it was last night.
Kick off at Jubilee Stadium
We are under way in Kogarah.
2,289. That’s the number of days since the Jets last beat Sydney FC away. And it’s not looking too likely, at least on form, that that’s going to change any time soon.
And for the Jets, Daniel Georgievski is out, suspended for a week, but Ronald Vargas returns from suspension.
For Sydney, Josh Brillante is out, suspended for one game, and Rhyan Grant is, of course, with the Socceroos at the Asian Cup.

Good evening, night, morning or afternoon, depending on where in the world you are reading this blog from. Just four spots on the A-League ladder separate Sydney FC from Newcastle Jets, but there is also a 14 points and 14 goals difference. While Sydney are hoping for a win to keep pace with Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory, the Jets are just looking to put some space between themselves and a potential wooden spoon.
