Match report: Brighton 0-3 Manchester United

Jacob Steinberg was at the Amex Stadium to see Manchester United pile more hurt on Brighton and advance to the last eight of the Carabao Cup. Here’s how he saw the action unfold ...

Updated

Fabrizio Romano knows so much about football transfers that if you opened his head and looked inside, you’d see Harry Redknapp rolling down a car window and calling various young prospects “triffic”. He has some news that may be of interest to Manchester United fans ...

The Man of the Match speaks: “They have a great manager who tries to play attractive football, they change also the system in the game, so you have to be alert,” says Juan Mata.” Today I think we played really good. We created chances in the second half, we had even more chances to kill the game. So we’re happy today.” He goes on to say he’s feeling well and ready to play when called upon. “I have plenty of football left in my legs and in my mind,” he says.

Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup: Newcastle have beaten Newport County on penalties, while Everton smited (smote?) West Ham 4-1 at Goodison Park. Manchester City left Turf Moor after beating Burnley 3-0 and also go into the pot for the quarter-final draw. Readers with long memories will, of course, recall, that Tottenham HOtspur beat Chelsea on penalties last night.

In tomorrow’s games, Brentford take on Fulham in the What Might Have Been derby, Aston Villa host stoke and Liverpool entertain Arsenal.

Full-time: Brighton 0-3 Manchester United

Peep! Peep! Peeeep! It’s all over and Manchester United advance to the quarter-finals of this season’s Carabao Cup. They dominated in the second half against a Brighton side that, once again, played well but looked worryingly toothless.

90+1 min: Pascal Gross shoots high over the crossbar, with a wayward hoof that prompts far more excitement than the fake crowd than his effort deserved. Given the terrible weather, the fact it’s a school night and the scoreline, you’d think most of the fake crowd would have left by now, in an effort to beat the fake traffic.

Updated

89 min: Dominic Calvert-Lewin completes his second hat-trick in successive home games as Everton go 4-1 up against West Ham at Goodison Park.

89 min: Handbags between McTominay, Trossard and Burn.

87 min: Lingard gallops down the right wing, cuts inside and curls a shot wide of the far post.

86 min: Victor Lindelof gets booked for reasons that escaped your reporter.

85 min: Meanwhile at Goodison Park - it’s Everton 3-1 West Ham.

84 min: That was a splendid free-kick from Pogba, albeit one that took a heavy touch off the Brighton defensive wall. He was wide on the left, but curled the ball into the nearest top corner. Luke Steele, in the Brighton goal, was utterly helpless.

81 min: Manchester United substittuion: Jesse Lingard on for Fred. Brighton substitution: Max Sanders on for Dan Burn.

GOAL! Brighton 0-3 Manchester United (Pogba 80)

Neal Maupay kneels behind the Brighton wall as Paul Pogba stands over a free-kick. The Frenchman shoots over the wall and into the near top corner with a brilliant, brilliant strike.

Updated

79 min: Joel Veltman takes one for the team, bringing down Marcus Rashford and getting a yellow card for his troubles.

76 min: Paul Pogba gets on the end of a neat Diogo Dalot cross from the right, only to head wide of the upright when scoring looked easier.

75 min: Brighton make a dog’s breakfast out of trying to play the ball out from the back. Mata crosses from the right, but Lewis Dunk clears.

GOAL! Brighton 0-2 Manchester United (Mata 72)

Ah, delightful. A low cross from the left and Donny van de Beek backheels a weighted pass into the path of Juan Mata in the penalty area. He takes a touch and waits for Lewis Dunk to commit before slotting the ball between the centre-back’s legs and into the bottom right-hand corner.

Updated

69 min: Manchester United double-substitution: Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba on for Odion Ighalo and Dan James.

68 min: Molumby does well to pick out Leandro Trossard. He looks a certainty to score from 10 yards out, but Dean Henderson saves his powerful shot brilliantly.

63 min: Brighton substitution: Viktor Gyokeres, who has huffed and puffed to little discernible effect, makes way for Leandro Trossard.

62 min: Gross picks up a pass in space on the edge of the United penalty area, but is closed down by Dan James before he can unleash a shot.

61 min: Everton 2-1 West Ham - latest score.

60 min: Back on defensive duties, Juan Mata shields the ball at the corner flag under pressure from Dan Burn. The Spaniard tries to yank the defender’s shorts down and is penalised. He pleads his innocence but to no avail. Nothing comes from the free-kick.

58 min: Brighton enjoy a spell of sustained possession but are unable to find an opening. A cross-field pass from Mac Allister to Joel Veltman is headed into the arms of Henderson from a tight angle. The linesman raises his flag.

55 min: Brighton win a free-kick in line with the right side of the United penalty area. An ambitious effort from Mac Allister flies high and wide. Lewis Dunk and Dan Burn, who had loped up expecting an inswinger, look unimpressed.

54 min: Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup, Manchester City have beaten Burnley 3-0, Newcastle have seen off Newport County on penalties and it’s all square at a goal apiece between Everton and West Ham.

53 min: Fred shoots around the wall, but Jason Steele saves comfortably.

51 min: Free-kick for United, about 30 yards from the Brighton goal, straight on. Juan Mata and Fred are standing over it.

50 min: Brighton substitution: Neal Maupay removes his padded coat and comes on for Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who limps off.

49 min: Jahanbakhsh goes down holding his thigh. Neal Maupay looks set to come on, but has yet to take off his coat in the driving rain.

48 min: Bernardo chests down a floated pass on the left side of the Manchester United penalty area, but his control isn’t the best and Lindelof clears.

46 min: Mac Allister sends Bernardo on his way with a weighted pass down the left, but Bailly takes the ball from him with an excellent tackle.

Second half: Brighton 0-1 Manchester United

46 min: The second half gets under way in a biblical downpour, with Manchester United getting the ball rolling. There are no changes in personnel on either side. Yet.

Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup ...

Newcastle left it late to equalise against Newport County before beating the League Two side on penalties, while the current latest scores are ...

  • Burnley 0-3 Manchester City (after 80 minutes)
  • Everton 1-0 West Ham (half-time)

Half-time: Brighton 0-1 Manchester United

Juan Mata and Scott McTominay deserve the plaudits as Manchester United go in a goal to the good at the break. The latter converted the former’s wonderful free-kick just before the break to give their side the lead in a Carabao Cup tie that has been otherwise fairly dull. The sides have been fairly evenly matched but it’s the visitors who have the advantage.

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Manchester United (McTominay)

Juan Mata curls an inviting ball into the penalty area. McTominay and Bailly are queuing up to head it home and it’s the Scotland international who is first in line and does exactly that to bag his first goal of the season. Poor defending from Brighton.

Updated

43 min: Dan Burn is booked for dragging Juan Mata, who is approximately half his height, to ground. Free-kick for United, wide on the right.

43 min: Jahanbakhsh sends in a cross from the right which is headed clear.

39 min: Brighton break down the right, Jahanbakhsh cuts inside Williams and tries a rather ambitious effort from distance. High and wide but it was worth a go from a player whose tail must be up afater an impressive start to the season.

35 min: The fake crowd appeals for a penalty after Brandon Williams drives inside and goes to ground under a challenge from Joel Veltman. None is forthcoming and it’s the correct decision. He lost his balance, fell over and didn’t even appeal himself.

35 min: Not necessarily in that order.

34 min: Frank Sinatra famously recommended, for the record, some or all of “a broad, a prayer, a bottle or a pill”.

33 min: The camera cuts to the touchline where Graham Potter has disarmed himself of his black Biro and is instead vigorously rubbing his nose with the fingers of his right hand. Whatever gets you through the night ...

31 min: Dan James and Brandon Williams try to combine down the left, but the Welshman loses the ball again. Brighton counter, but Eric Bailly uses his pace to clear up the danger with a good tackle on Pascal Gross.

28 min: Fred tries his luck with a long range shot from distance. It’s a decent strike, but straight at Jason Steele in the Brighton goal.

26 min: Henderson gets down low to his right to save a Jahanbakhsh snap-shot on the turn after excellent work from Mac Allister. The goalkeeper further earns his corn by reacting quickly to dive on the loose ball to prevent Mac Allister from getting first to the loose ball.

23 min: Brighton corner. It has all the hallmarks of one from the training ground they haven’t had time to practice often enough, but eventually Jahanbakhsh gets cross in from the right after some some freestyle riffing. Brandon Williams intercepts and heads clear. We’re over a quarter of the way into this game and it is not one that will live long in the memory so far.

21 min: On the edge of the Brighton penalty area, Van De Beek plays a nice give-and-go to Ighalo. He darts in behind the Brighton defence to collect the return pass but it is wayward.

19 min: Gyokeres knocks a long ball from the back into the path of Jahanbakhsh, whose shot from distance is feeble. Easy for Dean Henderson, who sends Manchester United on their way again.

18 min: Ighalo struggles to keep his balance and strikes the ball into the side-netting on the turn from a tight angle after receiving a cross from Juan Mata in the penalty area. That’s the best chance of the night so far.

16 min: Fabian Gross tries to put Viktor Gyokeres through with a long ball from the back. He gives the ball far too much welly and it sails through to Dean Henderson. Graham Potter’s tooth enamel takes a pounding.

14 min: The camera cuts to the touchline, where slightly pensive looking Brighton manager Graham Potter is tapping the non-business end of a black Bic Biro against his teeth. It’s all happening at the Amex tonight.

11 min: Pascal Gross tries to volley goalwards from the edge of the United penalty area, but miscues. The ball spins away from him and moments later, Dan Burn’s cross from the left is cleared by Bailly.

10 min: Advancing through the centre, Scott McTominay plays the ball right and wide to Odion Ighalo, who sends in a cross. Manchester United win a corner, which Brighton clear ... eventually.

7 min: Manchester United win the first corner of the game and Victor Lindelof and Bailly amble forward. Juan Mata sends the ball into the Brighton penalty area, but it’s cleared.

6 min: Manchester United are enjoying the majority of possession early doors, but keep giving the ball away in the Brighton half. Lewis Dunk pumps the ball forward but it sails out for a goal kick, which Henderson plays short to Bailly.

4 min: Nothing much to report in these early stages as the teams try to settle into something resembling a groove. Dean Henderson is forced to hack the ball out for a throw-in after being put under a little pressure by a wayward back-pass from Eric Bailly.

2 min: Manchester United play the ball out from the back, before Dan James is dispossessed halfway inside the Brighton half. He could be off on loan this week if - and it’s a very big IF - Manchester United manage to sign Jadon Sancho.

Brighton v Manchester United is go ...

1 min: Pascal Gross gets the ball rolling for Brighton after both teams take a quick knee, and the ball is hoofed forward.

Brighton v Manchester United: It is lashing rain at the Amex Stadium, where a slightly sheepish Ole Gunnar Solskjær has a minion named Karen holding an umbrella over his head as he conducts his pre-match interview. The teams are out and kick-off is just a couple of minutes away.

It’s finished Newport County 1-1 Newcastle United and the tie will be settled by penalties. Brighton v Manchester United to follow ...

A goal in Wales: Jonjo Shelvey has just scored a neat individual goal to equalise for Newcastle against Newport County, turning this way and that before curling one into the top corner with three minutes to go.

Updated

Meanwhile in Wales: Newport County are entertaining Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup, with the Welsh League Two side leading their top flight visitors by the only goal of the game with 15 minutes to go. Newcastle have been dismal and thoroughly deserve to be behind to Tristan Abrahams’ opener in the fifth minute.

Brighton v Manchester United line-ups

Brighton: Steele, White, Dunk, Burn, Veltman, Molumby, Mac Allister, Gross, Bernardo, Jahanbakhsh, Gyokeres

Subs: Sanchez, Maupay, Trossard, Sanders, Cochrane, Roberts, Jenks

Manchester United: Henderson, Dalot, Bailly, Lindelof, Williams, McTominay, Fred, Mata, Van de Beek, James, Ighalo

Subs: Grant, Fosu-Mensah, Mengi, Lingard, Pogba, Greenwood, Rashford

Change! Change! Change!

Between them, both managers make 19 changes from the teams that contested Saturday’s Premier League ding-dong. Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof is punished for his sub-par performance with a recall, while Brighton defenders Lewis Dunk and Ben White will be wondering what they did to deserve successive games on a very wet and windy night on the south coast.

Assistants: Daniel Robathan and Derek Eaton
Fourth official: Simon Hooper

Those incensed by assorted handball decisions awarded over the weekend will be delighted to learn that VAR is not being used at this stage of the competition.

Early team news

Both managers are expected to make plenty of changes from their contest at the weekend, but Graham Potter must plan without the trio of Yves Bissouma, who is suspended, and the long term lame and halt Jose Izquierdo and Florin Andone.

Donny van de Beek started against Luton last week and may well feature from the first whistle, while goalkeeper Dean Henderson is also expected to be between the sticks following his clean sheet against Luton. Fringe players and defenders Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are both sidelined with injury.

Carabao Cup fourth Round: Brighton v Manchester United

Just four days after playing out an entertaining Premier League game fortuitously won by Manchester United with a penalty kick awarded after the final whistle had blown, Brighton have a chance for revenge of sorts as the sides meet again in the Carabao Cup.

The Amex Stadium is the venue once again, for a game that may struggle to match the levels of entertainment served up by both sides on Saturday, but Brighton will have every right to fancy their chances having already seen off Portsmouth and Preston to make it to this stage of the competition.

United beat Luton 3-0 in their only foray into the EFL Cup so far this season. Kick-off in London-by-the-Sea is at 7.45pm (BST), but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
