Carl Robinson has been confirmed as Western Sydney Wanderers’ new coach, replacing Jean-Paul de Marigny who was sacked earlier in the week.

Former Wales midfielder Robinson will be joined by Kenny Miller, who takes up a role as a first-team assistant coach.

Robinson impressed since taking over at Newcastle Jets last season, and has now been tasked with turning around his new club’s recent fortunes.

“Sometimes in football you get an opportunity too good to turn down,” Robinson said. “This is a fantastic football club, a big club in the A-League and one that has set the foundations to be very successful.

“There is an expectation of winning that is clear and that is what I am here to do - have success on the pitch and create a pathway for our future players at the club.”

Robinson becomes Wanderers’ fourth coach in three years since Tony Popovic resigned after taking the expansion club on a remarkable journey from foundation to Asian Champions League winners in two years.

Popovic also led Wanderers to three A-League championship finals in his five years in charge and although they lost them all, the early success helped make the club one of the best-supported in the top flight.

Harder times have followed since his sudden departure with the club finishing seventh, eighth and ninth in the last three seasons under Spaniard Josep Gombau, German Markus Babbel and, briefly, de Marigny.

The club still has considerable potential, however, especially since they became tenants of the new 30,000-capacity Bankwest Stadium, which replaced their previous home in Parramatta.

“Carl is a fantastic individual, with high ideals and values for football and developing his playing group,” said Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer.

“There is an absolute need for this club to perform strongly, a strong Wanderers on the field means a strong A-League.

“In Carl Robinson we have a leader who understands the league, what our club values most and is determined to bring us the success we crave on the field and in the development of our future players and leaders.”

Robinson won 52 caps for Wales in a playing career which included spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland and Norwich City before taking up coaching at the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

The 44-year-old signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Jets in February and transformed the struggling team in his short spell in charge with a record of four wins, two draws and one loss in seven matches.

The 2020-21 A-League season is scheduled to kick off in December.
