... and that, my old MBM pals, is your lot. As the Old Trafford faithful bounce off into the cool autumn evening, a reminder that Jamie Jackson’s verdict is in. You’re one click away. Thanks for reading this MBM. Nighty night!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talks to BT Sport. “That’s what happens here at Old Trafford. Unfortunately we had to throw caution to the wind and we got lucky in the end. They are a very hard team to beat. They have not lost a game since way before the final, and they played some good teams before. It’s a difficult one, because we are at home and we want to win, but they play so well, but if we don’t go and press them, they’ll be happy enough to sit off. Sometimes it’s not about a pass there, a pass there, it’s the crowd, and when you have Cristiano on the pitch, there’s always a chance. Jesse was probably not happy, not playing more, but he comes on, makes an impact, and that’s what you do when you’re a sub at this club. Cristiano is so good in front of goal, and he has an impact on everyone. It’s massive for the players, to win games in this fashion, after we lost a game in Berne in that fashion. I’d rather have a win and a defeat than two draws! Atalanta are a good team, every game is hard at this level, that’s European football now. We’re onto the Everton game already.”

Jamie Jackson was at Old Trafford, and his report has landed. You know what to do ... but hopefully we’ll have a word from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer soon, so don’t forget to come back for a quick peek.

Bruno Fernandes speaks to BT Sport. “It is always difficult to play against Spanish teams. We know they play really well. They are good on the ball. We know the coach also. They always play good football, and are really well organised in defence. But we did a good job. Sometimes we had to be patient, but I think we did the right job. The main thing was to get the three points and we got it. I always felt we could win the game, and turn it around. The push from the fans was incredible. Some big saves from David de Gea to keep it 1-1, then at the end Cristiano does it once again! Modern football has changed a little, it is not like in the past where the big teams who spend more win every time, now small teams who do not spend a lot are well organised and do really well, so your focus always has to be at a high level.”

Bounce, bounce, bounce! Old Trafford is jumping! Ronaldo, on his 178th Champions League appearance, has hauled Manchester United out of a big hole there. Villarreal could have been a couple up at the break. They finally got their noses in front. But a stunning Alex Telles volley, followed by a dramatic winner from a player who simply refuses to admit defeat, turns what could have been a miserable night for United - a third consecutive home loss for the first time since 1962 - into a potentially seismic momentum shift for the rest of their Group F campaign, and indeed the season! United are still only third in the table, but joint on points now with second-placed Young Boys and just the one behind leaders Atalanta, who come here on matchday three.

Updated

FULL TIME: Manchester United 2-1 Villarreal

Ronaldo was booked for taking his shirt off ... but it was worth it, huh? What a turnaround! What a story! What a way to celebrate breaking the all-time Champions League appearance record!

90 min +6: There’s a VAR check for something, but it merely adds to the drama. The goal stands!

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Villarreal (Ronaldo 90 +5)

He’s done it! Fred dinks in from the left. Ronaldo heads back from the right. Lingard takes a touch to poke the ball across the face of the six-yard box back to Ronaldo, who forces home from a tight angle on the right! He whips off his top and races towards all the love pouring down from the Stretford End as Old Trafford explodes!

Updated

90 min +4: Cavani steams down the left. He’s forced to turn tail. Nowhere to go. And then ...

90 min +3: Ronaldo crosses from the right. Lingard sticks out a leg, eight yards out, and deflects towards the top right. Rulli sticks out a strong arm to stop. No Champions League redemption for Lingard, whose backpass led to the Young Boys defeat ... though he’ll always have the London Stadium.

90 min +2: Some space for Ronaldo out on the right. His looping cross evades everyone. Cavani runs into Foyth and wants a penalty but he’s not getting one.

90 min +1: Pena is booked for a slide on Matic. Fernandes floats the free kick in from the left. The ball drops to McTominay, who aims a volley towards the top right. Not enough venom. Easy for Rulli.

90 min: There will be five added minutes.

89 min: Turns out it’s not Ronaldo who makes way for Lingard; it’s Greenwood. Meanwhile Fred replaces Telles.

88 min: When the corner’s finally taken, Foyth sees his effort blocked by McTominay. United clear.

87 min: The resulting corner - the ball having squirted out of play to the right of goal - has to wait as De Gea gets some treatment on a sore back.

86 min: Gomez charges down the left. He’s allowed to make it all the way into the United box. He aims for the bottom right. De Gea gets down and parries bravely. Dia should slam home from six yards, but the keeper refuses to budge, then Telles and Varane combine to block on the line. What an escape for United!

84 min: United want to send Lingard on for the tiring Ronaldo, but faff around with the paperwork and must wait a while longer.

82 min: Matic rolls a pass down the left for Ronaldo, who flat-out refuses to chase after it. Cavani isn’t thinking twice, though, and he snaffles the ball away from Foyth. He can’t make anything of it, with no red shirts in attendance, but that’s fine determined play by the Uruguayan veteran.

81 min: United have enjoyed 52 percent of possession this evening. Can they convert this slight advantage into three precious points?

79 min: This is better from United, though. Greenwood crosses deep from the right. Cavani, coming in from the left, meets it with a header on the edge of the six-yard box. He inexplicably sends it wide left, although Gomez, just in front of him, may well have put him off.

78 min: It’s raining in Manchester. As breaking news goes, it’s not going to win a Pulitzer, but there’s little else to report right now.

76 min: Ronaldo forces Parejo into the concession of a corner down the left. The referee doesn’t give it, though, and Ronaldo nearly drills himself to the centre of the earth in anger.

75 min: Now it’s a double change for United, as Matic and Cavani come on for Pogba and Sancho.

73 min: Albiol goes off, to be replaced by Mandi. He’s one of three Villarreal changes, as Moreno and Pino make way for Gomez and Pena.

72 min: Telles is late for a fairly hysterical slide on Pino. He’s probably fortunate there was no contact, but it’s a yellow regardless. Meanwhile the Villarreal captain Albiol goes down injured.

70 min: Danjuma goes tearing off down the left. All the way to the edge of the United box. Lindelof does extremely well to get in the way of the eventual shot. For a second, with United again light at the back, the collective sucking back of air in the stands was audible.

68 min: Dia strides with purpose down the middle and is cynically tugged back by Greenwood, who earns himself a booking. One for the team, with Dia in full flight and United a bit light at the back. United deal with the resulting free kick easily enough, and Ronaldo tries to break, only to be hauled back by Albiol, who joins Greenwood in the referee’s notebook.

66 min: Pino is booked for a late clip on Telles.

64 min: Dia, in a good position down the right, walks the ball out of play. Villarreal’s supercool, in evidence for most of the evening, has suddenly deserted them.

62 min: Now it’s Pogba’s turn to bustle and threaten on the edge of the Villarreal box. He can’t quite barge his way through, but United’s tails are up now, and the visitors are rocking for the first time this evening.

61 min: That’s one hell of a finish! Some assist by Fernandes, too. Estupinan replaces Trigueros, then Sancho slips while executing a shot on the edge of the box. The ball squirts through to Rulli. Suddenly, it’s all happening, and Old Trafford is bouncing again!

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Villarreal (Telles 60)

What a strike this is! Fernandes, to the right of the box, near the byline, wedges the free kick back towards Telles, striding in from the left. He meets the dropping ball by the corner of the D, and creams a sensational volley across Rulli and into the bottom right!

Updated

59 min: Moreno is booked for a clip on Greenwood, just to the right of the Villarreal box, with the United striker threatening to bust clear. And from the free kick ...

58 min: The goalscorer Alcacer is replaced by Dia.

56 min: ... but Fernandes tries to fix that by shifting into some space down the inside-right channel and aiming for the top-left corner. His rising drive isn’t too far wide, but Rulli had it covered all the way.

55 min: That’s no more than Villarreal deserve. United haven’t warmed Rulli’s hands yet.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Villarreal (Alcacer 53)

Fernandes wriggles away from Moreno in the deep, then feeds Pogba, who tries to release Sancho down the left. Sancho is in space, but the pass is way too heavy. Rulli claims, and Villarreal counter. Trigueros slips a pass down the left for Danjuma, who eases past Dalot and crosses low towards the near post, where Alcacer slides in to ram home from six yards.

51 min: The crowd get excited as Edinson Cavani embarks on a warm-up jog. Fair play, there’s not much happening on the pitch right now.

49 min: McTominay goes down holding his ribs, having taken a whack in a tussle with Danjuma. Eventually he gets up. He doesn’t initially want to accept Danjuma’s apology, but eventually does so, albeit with a grimace and some effing and jeffing it doesn’t take too experienced a lipreader to decipher.

47 min: Some early United probing. Some slow early United probing. Telles tries to pick up the speed down the left but succeeds only in shanking out for a goal kick.

Villarreal get the second half underway. No changes.

Half-time reading. Here’s Ben Fisher on the current travails of two-time European Cup winners Nottingham Forest and one-time semi-finalists Derby County.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Villarreal

How on earth is this still goalless? But hey, it’s what United and Villarreal do whenever they meet in the Champions League.

45 min: It’s De Gea to the rescue again as Pino drops a shoulder to swan in from the right and powers towards the bottom left. Saved. How many more chances will United ship before being punished?

Updated

43 min: ... and now it’s Moreno’s turn to breathe again! Pogba wedges a ball down the middle. Moreno tries to intercept, but, facing his own goal, manages only to stab the ball past Rulli, who was rushing out to the edge of his area to claim. The ball rolls agonisingly wide of the left-hand post. Just a corner, which comes to naught. Safe to say, the United faithful would have enjoyed that particular own goal.

42 min: The corner is a waste of time. Villarreal then break quickly ... and they’re two against one! But that one - Dalot - holds his position well between Alcacer and Pino, forcing the former to push the latter far too wide right. A grand opportunity spurned. United breathe again.

41 min: Telles crosses from a deep position on the left. The ball deflects out for a United corner. Before it can be taken, the referee rollocks Moreno and Pogba for playing silly buggers.

39 min: Fernandes wriggles his way into space down the right. He gets the better of Moreno and scoops a cross to the far post for Ronaldo, though it’s a wee bit too deep. All Ronaldo can do is swivel and try to play the ball back across the face of goal, and that’s an easy snaffle for Rulli.

Updated

38 min: Pogba steps in from the left wing and decides to have a thwack from distance. It’s straight at Rulli and easy for the keeper. It’s also United’s first attempt on target.

36 min: A long pass down the right looks to have released Greenwood into the box. He doesn’t quite get the ball under control, allowing Torres and Moreno to perform a pincer movement on him and wrestle it away. Greenwood goes over, and Moreno might have given him a cheeky tug on the shirt there, but the flag goes up for offside, so it’s all moot.

34 min: Fernandes, in a small pocket of space to the left of the D, drops a shoulder to breeze past Capoue and into the box. He’s just about to cause all manner of bedlam when Foyth comes across, gets awkwardly in the way, and draws a frustrated foul. Better from United, though.

33 min: Villarreal have enjoyed 54 percent possession in the last quarter of an hour.

31 min: A long ball down the middle. Varane should deal with it, well ahead of Alcacer, but air kicks. Alcacer tears clear, but whistles his low drive inches wide of the bottom left, with De Gea rooted to the spot. Villarreal should be leading.

30 min: ... but it’s Danjuma versus Dalot again, and this time the Villarreal man swans off imperiously. He enters the box and should do better than slapping a weak shot wide left from a not-particularly-tight angle. “The last time a United right-back was roasted like this, Gary Nev retired at half-time,” quips Adam Hirst.

Updated

29 min: Danjuma skips down the left and this time is ushered away successfully by Dalot.

27 min: Sancho skips past Pino in elegant style, but there aren’t any options for him, and he’s forced to turn tail, the move eventually breaking down. Better from United, for whom attack may be the best form of defence tonight.

25 min: From the resulting free kick, the play’s switched to the right flank, where Pino strides towards the edge of the United box before hoicking harmlessly over.

24 min: Moreno romps down the left and is unceremoniously stopped in his tracks by Greenwood, who clocks him in the mush in doing so. The home fans very much enjoyed that, referring to his scouse heritage in song, though another referee might have booked Greenwood for that cheeky slap.

22 min: Danjuma romps clear of Dalot, who is having a few problems here. Lindelof ushers him away from danger, but only at the expense of a corner. The set piece is worked cleverly to Moreno, rushing in from deep. Moreno lashes wildly over the bar. United can’t keep giving up half-chances like this.

20 min: Alcacer nicks the ball off a dozing Fernandes in the centre circle. United need to pick things up a little here.

18 min: The corner’s no good. United try to break upfield, and they’re three on two, but Ronaldo’s effort to sweep a pass to Sancho on the left is intercepted. This is great end-to-end fun, although Villarreal’s rapier thrusts have quietened the Old Trafford crowd a little.

17 min: Danjuma wings it down the left. His cross is flashed at goal by Alcacer, whose header is turned over the bar by De Gea.

15 min: Danjuma rolls a clever pass down the middle in the hope of springing Alcacer clear. He nearly manages it, but Varane comes sliding in to scupper the Villarreal striker’s plans. That’s wonderful last-ditch covering. Villarreal look dangerous.

14 min: Fernandes is in acres on the right. He breaks into the box, waiting to receive a killer ball. Varane, quarterbacking from deep, flays a hard and flat delivery straight into the crowd. Frustration for Bruno, and relief for Alberto Moreno, who was on walkabout. Liverpool fans are permitted a memorial shiver.

13 min: Pogba nearly gets on the end of a long pass down the inside-left channel. Not quite. Rulli gathers. This is very open.

11 min: United half-clear the corner. Villarreal come back at them through Trigueros, who very nearly releases Alcacer into the box down the middle. Alcacer can’t control, which is just as well for United, who were momentarily rocking.

10 min: Capoue once again sets Villarreal on the attack with an adventurous pass forward. Danjuma finds more space down the inside left. Moreno goes on the overlap, his dummy run making room for Danjuma, who cuts inside and powers a curler towards the bottom right. De Gea turns the ball round for a corner.

8 min: Sancho nearly beats Foyth to the left of the Villarreal box. He settles for a corner. The set piece finds the head of Ronaldo, who heads harmlessly over. The visitors won’t want to be giving Ronaldo many more opportunities like that.

Updated

6 min: Capoue, in the centre circle, sends a long ball down the left wing. Danjuma is clear! Easy as that! Danjuma enters the box and opens his body. He sidefoots goalwards with power, but straight at De Gea, who parries well. United were opened up with worrying ease there.

4 min: Villarreal have hardly touched the ball yet. The Old Trafford faithful are giving it plenty. Some pantomime catcalls for Alberto Moreno, formerly of Liverpool. Great atmosphere.

2 min: Telles has a little look down the left. He can’t find anyone in the middle with his cross. Then Lindelof tries to release Sancho with a long pass, but the ball squirts through to Rulli in the Villarreal goal. Finally Ronaldo considers shooting, but shifts the ball left to Fernandes instead. Fernandes - United’s captain for the night in Harry Maguire’s absence - hoicks over from the edge of the box.

And we’re off! United get the match started, but only after a knee of equality, solidarity and love is taken. Within seconds, Greenwood is scampering down the right. He’s quickly surrounded, but that’s a statement of intent all right.

Updated

The teams are out! A fine atmosphere at Old Trafford, as Ronaldo takes to the European stage on his old stomping ground for the first time since his return. The Red Devils wear red, while the Yellow Submarine are in yellow. Exactly as everything says on the tin. We’ll be off in a minute!

NOSTALGIA CORNER with Christopher Faherty. “The game between United and Villarreal at El Madrigal on Tuesday the 25th of November 2008 is one of the most incident-free games of football I’ve ever seen. So stultifying was the general play that I don’t remember Joan Capdevila being sent off (!) as per Soccerbase.” Your old pal and mine, Rob Smyth, was on MBM duty that night. Here’s how that match panned out, though if you can’t be bothered clicking, and goodness knows neither Christopher nor myself has sold it well, the following entry seems to have stood the test of time:

80 min “This is utter gish,” says David Edgar, doing in five syllables what many men would do in 94. “I’m not sure if that’s exactly the Robin Day level of debate you are after on here, but it doesn’t mean it’s not true.”

Ole speaks to BT Sport. “Alex and Diogo have been waiting for their chance, so they’ve got it now. It’s always what they trained for, and they’re ready. That back four should be all right! Luke Shaw had not trained since Saturday so there was no chance. Unfortunately let’s see how long it takes. Varane has been impressive since he has come here. He has been authoritative and calm and I’m sure we’ll see that tonight as well. Jadon is ready.” And if you get a penalty, asks BT’s Matt Smith? “Ha ha! We’ll see.”

The other game in Group F kicked off early at 5.45pm BST and has just finished. Atalanta have beaten Young Boys 1-0 thanks to a 68th-minute Matteo Pessina goal. So as things stand, the Italians lead the group on four points, one ahead of the Swiss. Villarreal, who drew 2-2 with Atalanta on matchday one, are third with a point, while United sit at the bottom, yet to chalk one up.

Cristiano Ronaldo will break the all-time Champions League appearance record tonight. He’ll play in his 178th game in the competition upon starting this evening’s match, moving ahead of his old Real Madrid mucker Iker Casillas. Meanwhile the injured Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are replaced by Victor Lindelof and Alex Telles, while Diogo Dalot replaces the suspended Aaron Wan-Bissaka. There’s also a start for Jadon Sancho.

The teams

Manchester United: de Gea, Dalot, Varane, Lindelof, Alex Telles, Pogba, McTominay, Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Sancho, Ronaldo.
Subs: Bailly, Mata, Martial, Lingard, Fred, Cavani, Heaton, Henderson, Matic, van de Beek, Elanga.

Preamble

Manchester United could do with a result tonight. They’ve lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, and if they don’t gain a semblance of revenge over Villarreal for their defeat in the Europa League final in May, they’ll have a little work to do in Group F ... and the Overly Melodramatic Early Season Baton of Despair will be thrust into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s paw. But the margins are slim: should United take the three points this evening - and they’re favourites to do so - they’ll be sitting nicely in the group, will have paid Villarreal back for That Evening In Gdansk, and spirit will be nicely restored after a tricky week.

Here’s to an exciting evening then ... although don’t bet the house on a goalfest. The penalty shootout in the Europa League final may have ended 11-10 after a 1-1 draw, but the four previous meetings between these two have ended 0-0, 0-0, 0-0 and ... 0-0. More goals, please! Kick off is at 8pm BST. It’s on!
