Matty Cash sent a message of support to a Poland teammate stranded in Ukraine after scoring the opening goal in Aston Villa’s 2-0 win at Brighton. The Villa full-back broke the deadlock with a fine early finish before taking off his shirt to reveal a “stay strong” message to the Dynamo Kyiv defender, Tomasz Kedziora, receiving a caution in the process.

The Royal Opera House cancelled a season of performances by Moscow’s famed Bolshoi Ballet, European football’s governing body took the Champions League final away from St Petersburg, and a host of Russian businesses were rocked by resignations of big-name European directors. In the hours and days following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, it became clear that Russia is no longer a welcome member of western society.

Reda Khadra made up for his midweek penalty miss by ending Blackburn’s five-match goal drought to register a 1-0 win over fellow promotion hopefuls QPR.

Sean Dyche after Burnley’s 1-1 draw at Palace: “First half there wasn’t a lot in it, we were a little bit sluggish ... but fantastic reaction [second half] ... the mentality is solid, to get us through this [relegation battle] ... overall I think both sides will probably take it. The big journey down yesterday didn’t help.”

The draw specialists Crystal Palace and Burnley could not be separated after Luka Milivojevic’s own goal cancelled out an early opener from Jeffrey Schlupp for the hosts at Selhurst Park.

Bogdan Kotarlic emailed earlier:

“Hello Luke, I am from Serbia and I know what a war means (we had four of them in the 90s here) so I would like this madness in Ukraine to stop. Nobody benefits from the wars, except for the privileged few.”

I’ll second that, Bogdan.

And well done to Poland and Sweden for taking a stand:

Manchester United’s inability to finish any of their countless chances was near-comedic and costly. Against a Watford side with one league win since November, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were the chief culprits, each missing when it appeared easier to score.

This match will be remembered for what mattered the most: that Christian Eriksen returned, to the most rapturous of receptions, to competitive football and completed 38 accomplished minutes for Brentford as a substitute.

Blackpool produced plenty of grit and determination as they came from behind to thump former manager Paul Ince’s Reading 4-1. Lucas Joao gave Reading a 17th-minute lead but Marvin Ekpiteta drew the Seasiders level before the break and second-half goals from Gary Madine, Shayne Lavery and Josh Bowler secured the points. It was Blackpool’s first Championship victory in five games, and leaves the Royals precariously placed just above the drop zone after their mini-revival came to a shuddering halt following back-to-back wins. (PA Media)

Into injury time at the Amex Stadium: Aston Villa still lead 2-0. Cash and Watkins with the goals.

“Two teams meet in urgent need of maximum points but for entirely different reasons.”

What will the top of the Premier League look like on the final day, 22 May? And what will the bottom look like? It is all up for grabs at both ends of the division, now with just three points between the once-runaway leaders Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool going into this weekend’s matches.

At the bottom, Leeds and Everton – 15th and 16th as it stands – are officially right in the relegation scrap, with Newcastle and Burnley enjoying some positive recent results that have boosted their hopes of survival. Eddie Howe’s Magpies would overtake today’s opponents Brentford and move up to 14th place if they can triumph away in south-west London, while Manchester United will aim to close the gap to third-placed Chelsea with a win at home to Watford this afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently enduring another painful afternoon, against Tottenham, with Burnley, Everton and Watford all in action later today ... I’ll bring you as much news as possible from all the 3pm kick-offs across the Premier League and Football League, with the Championship leaders Fulham away to Cardiff City, and second-placed Bournemouth at home to Stoke. Let’s do this.
