Thank you so much for joining me for this Women’s Champions League fixture this evening. Beth Mead’s goal was the difference in a frustrating game for Arsenal as they wasted multiple chances but it is the Gunners who take all three points from this encounter, you can catch up with all the action in the report below. We will be back tomorrow to bring you live coverage of Chelsea and Manchester United’s European games. See you soon.
The big news in women’s football today is that Spurs’ Jess Naz has ruptured her ACL. You can catch up with that news here:
In the other 8pm GMT kick-offs Real Madrid beat Wolfsburg 2-0 and PSG drew 0-0 with OH Leuven.
FC Twente’s Jill Roord told Disney +: “We came here as the underdog obviously so we wanted to stay in the game. I think that we did that very well. Obviously we lost but I think that was the expectation. I think the way we fought, I am proud of that.”
That result means Arsenal are now seventh in the table, while FC Twente are 14th. There is just one more round of league fixtures to go.
Jill Roord catches up with her former Arsenal teammates after full time, the star struggled for game time in this encounter and didn’t show what she could do.
Full time: Arsenal 1-0 FC Twente
So Beth Mead’s goal in the 10th minute is the difference between these two sides this evening. There will be disappointment for Arsenal as they should have been at least 2-0 winners with that gap potentially seeing Leah Williamson get some minutes but the England captain will have to wait until this weekend against Everton in the Women’s Super League to return to the pitch. FC Twente were great at times in defence but their lack of attack let them down and all three points go to the Gunners.
90 + 4 min: Arsenal are making a change with Russo off for Blackstenius, she is known for a late goal so she may get herself on the scoresheet.
90 + 2 min: Little wins a free kick and Arsenal take it quickly. However, as they try to build from deep FC Twente win it back. Roord finds Hulst but her long cross is straight out of play.
90 + 1 min: There will be five minutes added.
90 min: What an incredible block, I think it was Knol there as Foordbelts it towards goal. That was some excellent scramble defence from the visitors on what looked like would be a sure goal.
88 min: Arsenal heavily appeal for a penalty for a foul in the box on Maanum, Russo had her arms in the air but it is not given. VAR is in operation I believe but they aren’t checking it.
87 min: Though the visitors are getting more joy upfront, it is the hosts who still look the better side. Fox pops it into the area but FC Twente scramble the ball clear.
85 min: FC Twente are disrupting the hosts a lot more in the last few mintues with Roord again winning the ball. It eventually comes to Tuin, who finds Ravensbergen but her chance is saved by Borbe.
84 min: Arsenal make another change with Hinds off for Fox but no sign of Williamson yet.
82 min: Roord wins the ball high up and I think this is the first time the camera has panned that right this half but it doesn’t last long with Arsenal clearing the danger.
80 min: Oh my word, Russo hits the woodwork. Maanum makes a great run down the right and crosses in but Russo’s header hits the crossbar.
79 min: Foord has been a great introduction to this game, the exact injection of pace Arsenal needed but it’s her teammates who she finds in the box who are not turning her good work into goals. Fc Twente make a change as Proost is off for Hulst.
77 min: That was the chance. Foord puts in a perfect cross but it skims Russo and she can’t turn it goalward.
76 min: I think you will guess what I am about to say but yes Arsenal have won another free kick, this time as Cooney-Cross is fouled. McCabe takes it and it almost goes all the way through but Lemey collects.
74 min: McCabe with a forced cross which goes straight out of play, she has had a few questionable touches in the last few mintues.
72 min: Commentary continually talks about how it will be a worry for Arsenal that they are only 1-0 up. I agree in the fact that they should have taken more chances but also surely a win is a win if they can see this over the line?
71 min: Arsenal continue to push but FC Twente are doing just enough to keep them out, the visitors have had practically no front foot ball in this half.
Updated
69 min: The corner is again taken well by McCabe but the referee judges that Lemey has been fouled and so the chance is over.
68 min: Mead wants another free kick but it isn’t given and then the visitors concede a corner, it’s all Arsenal momentum right now but can they capitalise? McCabe is over the corner and the delivery is pinpoint but again it’s cleared, this time by Caleer but it’s another corner.
67 min: You get a free kick, you get a free kick, you get a free kick. It’s turning into an episode of Oprah as McCabe is fouled. Cooney-Cross is over this ball and it’s a great delivery. Russo gets to it but Lemey makes another incredible save.
66 min: McCabe take it and she whips it in but Lemey makes another good save. Arsenal wanted a resulting corner but it is given as a goal kick.
65 min: Mead, who is having an absolute blinder this evening, wins another free kick as Van Ginkel gets a yellow card. This time the set piece is in a great position and McCabe is over this one.
63 min: Mead does what she does best and she wins a free kick. It is McCabe and Cooney-Cross over the set piece once again and it’s the Republic of Ireland international who sends it in. It’s a great delivery but Lemey punches clear really well.
61 min: My, oh my that should have been a second for Arsenal. Mead puts in an absolute beauty of a ball but Russo’s header goes wide.
Updated
60 min: Arsenal are making changes with Smith off for Foord, Caldentey off for Maanum and Pelova off for Little. Williamson’s return will have to wait, we are expecting the England captain around the 80th minute.
58 min: Catley puts in a misplaced pass for a long build-up from the hosts to end with nothing.
56 min: Boos rain down onto the pitch as Smith tackles Roord and she is handed a yellow card for the challenge. It’s a bit of a soft yellow card but things are getting tasty.
54 min: Applause rings around Meadow Park as Borbe gets back to her feet, the goalkeeper is going to play on. That will be a huge relief for everyone at Arsenal with the club already on their third-choice keeper because of injuries with Manuela Zinsberger and Daphne van Domselaar.
52 min: The visitors have a great chance as Oude Elberink is found in a one-on-one with Borbe and the FC Twente star clashes with the goalkeeper. It sees the visitor receive a yellow card and Borbe is receiving treatment, a keeper injury is not what they need right now Arsenal.
51 min: Some phenomenal skill, particularly though Hinds, sees Arsenal on the frontfoot again but it ends with Ravensbergen clearing.
49 min: The visitors do need to be the next to score, a 2-0 scoreline would surely be too much for them to comeback from. It is the Gunners who have started brighter in this second half but Caldentey’s latest chance is collected by Lemey.
47 min: Kari has emailed
I assumed that Twente’s draw with Chelsea had been the latter’s fault, but the Dutch team has been better than I expected. After conceding early I thought they’d fall apart, but they’ve been solid since. I’d still be very surprised if the Gunners don’t see this out.
Yes, FC Twente are an impressive side but they do need some more fire power up front. I feel like they have bene holding on a bit so far, rather than them being incredible skilful.
Back underway: Arsenal 1-0 FC Twente
Can Arsenal finish this off in style? Or will FC Twente claim a comeback win? All to come.

Half-time: Arsenal 1-0 FC Twente
Arsenal should be ahead by more goals but overall they will be happy after Beth Mead put them ahead in the 10th minute. FC Twente have not really offered much up front but they remain in this fixture and they are not to be underestimated as they did draw 1-1 with Chelsea.
45 + 2 min: There are two minutes added and Arsenal win a corner. The delivery is a good one from McCabe but it’s headed clear.
45 min: The visitors have their best spell of the game and it ends with Van der Vegt down in the box, FC Twente want a penalty. VAR is in operation but I don’t believe anything will be given.
43 min: The fouls are starting to wrack up now as Smith wins yet another free kick. Cooney-Cross sends it in again and while it is a bit loose but Lemey collects.
41 min: Smith, who has been a menace all match, wins a free kick from a foul by Van der Vegt. McCabe and Cooney-Cross stand over the ball but it is the Australia international who takes it. However, Knol clears it well with a header.
39 min: Arsenal are throwing everything at FC Twente at the moment but the final pass just is not coming off. But the hosts look comfortable in this game so they aren’t rushing any attacks.
Updated
37 min: FC Twente peel forward but Oude Eiberink can’t quite keep the ball on the pitch, the visitors need to capitalise when they have those chances as they are few and far between at the moment.
36 min: The crowd at Meadow Park are in full voice, running through the player songs and they are currently on Victoria Pelova’s as they battle in the midfield.
34 min: There is some beautiful football from Arsenal in the box but Mead is dispossessed. There are some jeers from the crowd wanting a penalty but there are no protests from any players.
32 min: McCabe is playing in her 50th Champions League game this evening, she has been relatively quiet so far but that corner delivery was quite something.
31 min: Oh my word that was almost an own goal. Mead perfectly weights a cross in, Pelova hits it on and Carleer passes but it narrowly goes wide for a corner. The delivery is good from McCabe and Russo’s header is just wide.
29 min: FC Twente are trying a high press but it really isn’t working for them, Arsenal are running rings around them and all that is missing is another goal.
27 min: Well, that is what Arsenal need to watch out for. FC Twente counter and the ball comes into the box with Proost’s header over the bar.
26 min: Mead finds Hinds who crosses it in but it’s deflected and Lemey can collect. Possession then exchanges hands as FC Twente continue to struggle at Meadow Park.
24 min: Lemey collects the ball after a shot comes in following another bit of sloppy play at the back, if they continue to do that in this fixture they will be punished once again by the hosts.
22 min: FC Twente lose it at the back, they have been so sloppy in that area, and Russo has a chance but it’s blocked. The Gunners continues to push and they want a free kick as Smith is fouled but it isn’t given, that really should have been a free kick. Smith is okay to continue though.
20 min: Oh actually it’s a throw in but Hinds has a good delivery as the Gunners look to capitalise on their extended momentnum. However, FC Twente do well to muscle the ball back to clear the danger.
19 min: Since scoring the goal it has been all Arsenal, the visitors are really struggling to get a grip on this fixture. Mead, the scorer of the goal, has won a corner.
17 min: Arsenal’s build-up play is so impressive as Smith pops it into the box but Knol sees it clear.
15 min: Hinds is on her feet but she doesn’t look comfortable, however she is going to continue.
14 min: Arsenal are pressing the pressure button and they wanted a free kick with Hinds down but it isn’t given. The England international remains on the ground though and she needs some medical assistance
12 min: It will be interesting to see how FC Twente respond now, so far they have been a bit loose at the back since Mead scored. If they concede again in quick succession it will be a mountain to climb.
Caldentey won it in a great position and she fed Russo. The England international finds her compatriot Mead and she slots it in the bottom right corner.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 FC Twente (Mead, 10)
That was too easy.
Updated
10 min: Just as I say defences aren’t easily broken down, FC Twente’s melts away as Mead has a great effort but it is cleared off of the line by Knol, a great bit of defence. The Arsenal star believes it went over the line but we play on.
8 min: A bit of a slow start to this one if we are completely honest. Both respective defences proving tricky to break down.
6 min: Arsenal have the first shot of the game and it came from a rapid attack. They thread it beautifully through the team but Caldentey’s effort is over the bar.
4 min: There’s a lot of play in the midfield at the moment with FC Twente finding it difficult to turn their possession into a real chance.
2 min: Charles has got in touch and emailed
Arsenal fans will be clutching their rabbit’s feet, four leaf clovers and horseshoes, in the hope that not only Leah Williamson gets on, but doesn’t break anything (and shows that she’s lost nothing of her magisterial presence on the field). Things need to turn around, and perhaps this is the pivot on which the season swings back upwards. All pray.
Williamson returning is a huge positive for the Gunners, we will probably see her around the 80th minutes. On pitch both sides are just finding their feet in this fixture.
Kick-off: Arsenal 0-0 FC Twente
Here we go.
I would love to hear from you. Snack chat is always welcome here but if you have any other topics or football-related questions send me an email.
Arsenal have had an up and down season but they won their last match against Liverpool. Have a read of the report:
In the early kick-off today Juventus have beaten St Polten 5-0 with Cristiana Girelli scoring two penalties. The result takes the Italian club to top of the table, while St Polten are 17th.
Arsenal manager Renée Slegers said of FC Twente: “I think the Dutch always play with a lot of aggression and rarely shy away from big moments, so that’s going to be interesting to play against. We’re very respectful of our opponents and think it’s going to be a good game. It’s also going to be special for me to play against a Dutch team.”
A fun fact for you, Renée Slegers is the first Dutch manager to come up against a club from the Netherlands in the Women’s Champions League.
Corina Dekker, Twente coach, has said ahead of the fixture: “We want to show what we can do [in this competition], and on the whole we’re doing well. That is again the aim for this match against Arsenal: to show who we are and demonstrate our character. It’s about what we do with the ball, not losing it too quickly, and making good use of the space we create.”
Have a listen to the women’s football weekly here:
As you may have noticed, Leah Williamson is on Arsenal’s bench. She is set to play a “few minutes” this evening, according to Arsenal manager Renée Slegers. It will be the first time she has played since the 2025 Euros final because she sustained a knee injury at the major tournament.
FC Twente’s team news has dropped. Former Arsenal player Jill Roord starts in the midfield.
FC Twente: Lemey, Van der Vegt, Knol, Carleer, Tuin, Van Ginkel, Roord, Groenewegen, Oude Eiberink, Ravensbergen, Proost.

The team news is in. With Daphne van Domselaar out injured, Arsenal Anneke Borbe starts in goal and Leah Williamson has been named on the bench. Williamson would make her first appearance of the season if introduced.

Bench: Liddiard, Fox, Williamson, Harwood, Little, Maanum, Foord, Blackstenius.
I am searching for FC Twente’s team news now and I will drop it in as soon as I have it.
Preamble
Hello and welcome to the Women’s Champions League match between Arsenal and FC Twente. A win is crucial for each club this evening but for very different reasons.
Three points for the visitors FC Twente would see them close in on a play-off spot as they are currently 14th, if they stay in their current position they will be out of the European competition. This is one of their last chances to boost the optics of them progressing as after this evening there is just one round left of the league stage.
For Arsenal, meanwhile, a win could potentially move them into the top five (depending on other results in this round of fixtures). It would be a boost for their season after disappointing performances in the Women’s Super League seeing them fourth in the domestic table.
We will hear from both teams before kick-off and the team news will be dropping shortly so stay tuned.
