That’s all from me! I’ll leave you with Suzanne Wrack’s match report from the Emirates.
Speaking at full-time, Arsenal winger Olivia Smith told Sky Sports: “The atmosphere was amazing at the Emirates. I have the utmost respect for Liverpool, they’re my previous club, so that will always be there. In terms of the goal, I’m really happy to get back on the scoresheet and also to try and continue that run for the games going forward.”
On Liverpool, she added: “They were definitely really tough to break down. They’re obviously going through a rough patch, but they were able to pull off results that were really good, considering, especially with their depth, so I think they’re doing pretty well right now.”
Despite the loss, Liverpool are certainly improving under Gareth Taylor. They made it difficult for Arsenal today and perhaps could have got something from the game had they had a bit more fire power on the bench.
If they make a few additions in January, there’s a good chance they will be safe come the end of the season.
Arsenal fans, if you want an update from the Premier League, Mikel Arteta’s men are currently level with Aston Villa. You can follow the action with Barry Glendenning’s live blog:
As frustrating as she can be to watch sometimes – and yes, I’m talking about the plethora of offsides – you cannot deny that Stina Blackstenius can change a game. That decisive late strike from her was brilliant and could prove to be crucial come the end of the season.
Full-time: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
Arsenal take all three points… just. The Gunners will feel very relieved after that.
90+5 min: Arsenal make a change now as Laia Codina replaces Smith. The hosts are clearly looking to preserve this lead for the final few minutes.
90+2 min: Another change for Liverpool as MacLean is replaced by Leanne Kiernan.
90+1 min: Seven minutes have been added on…
Can Liverpool find another equaliser?
90 min: McCabe sends Blackstenius through but the striker is flagged offside… even though she was in her own half…
88 min: An excellent ball over the top falls to Blackstenius, who brings it down before doing a 360-degree turn and blasting her shot into the top-right corner! It was coming!
Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool (Stina Blackstenius, 87)
Blackstenius may have just won it for the Gunners with a spectacular strike!
Updated
82 min: Another huge chance for Arsenal (how many times have I written that today?) as Foord pokes the ball through to Blackstenius. Evans looks to clear but instead sets the striker up perfectly before running back and making a crucial block to send the ball out!
A phenomenal tackle!
81 min: Blackstenius is sent through on goal again. Blackstenius is flagged offside… again.
79 min: This really feels like we’re watching an attack v defence training drill – only the attackers can’t seem to convert anything.
Anyway, around 10 minutes left to play… surely there’s another goal in this…
77 min: Fox now receives the ball and goes for a pass/shot which runs straight through the box and behind for a goal kick.
73 min: Arsenal go on the hunt again as a cross from Caldentey deflects upwards and loops to McCabe, who unleashes a thumping volley which flies narrowly over the bar. What a goal that could’ve been.
71 min: Another substitution for Liverpool as Silcock limps off and is replaced by Alejandra Bernabé.
70 min: The Gunners capitalise on a poor pass out from Kirby as McCabe plays a first-time pass to Caldentey, who sets Foord through, but her shot is easily saved by the Liverpool goalkeeper.
68 min: Cooney-Cross goes for a wild shot from distance which flies way off-target and into the crowd.
That is her last contribution to the game as she then makes way for captain Kim Little, who returns to the pitch following a month out with a knock.
67 min: Liverpool make their first change, with Sofie Lundgaard replacing Parry.
66 min: Arsenal go on the attack again as Smith goes for a low driven shot, which is saved by Kirby. The ball then deflects straight to Foord, who blasts her shot way over the bar.
64 min: Silcock goes to ground in pain after a 50-50 challenge with Foord. This could be a huge concern for Liverpool.
Foord is shown a yellow card.
61 min: Arsenal should really benefit from these substitutions. Two very attacking changes with Foord and Blackstenius introduced along with the addition of McCabe, who can provide a threat down that left side, where the Gunners have heavily targeted.
59 min: Caldentey plays the ball through Liverpool’s high line and to Russo, but there is a bit too much on the pass and Kirby comes out to collect.
57 min: Arsenal make a triple change, with Katie McCabe on for Hinds, Caitlin Foord replacing Mead and Stina Blackstenius on for Maanum.
That should see Smith move over to the right now, with Foord taking her spot on the left.
55 min: Maanum makes her way down the right before cutting inside and poking the ball through the legs of Woodham and to Mead. The winger’s shot is then blocked by Evans.
53 min: Arsenal are beginning to play with a bit more fire now after dropping off in the first half. They just need to start converting these chances. Precious points are at stake.
50 min: Caldentey pokes the ball through to Russo in the box, who turns before firing her shot wide from just over six yards out! She doesn’t usually miss those!
Updated
48 min: Chance for Liverpool as a corner is sent into the box. The ball drops into a dangerous area and Arsenal fail to deal with it at first but can eventually clear.
Kick-off: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
We’re back under way at the Emirates!
The teams are out and we’re about to go again…
It all started so well for Arsenal, but too many chances were squandered and now they find themselves level after just a few Liverpool attacks and some sloppy defending. We’ve seen it all too often from the Gunners this season.
If they drop points here, any title hopes they may have still had will be dashed completely.
Kári Tulinius has messaged in to say:
“I’m not going to lie, I thought this would be a walkover for the Gunners. Liverpool have had some good fortune, but they’ve also made their own luck. Obviously, as an Arsenal fan, I hope they put a couple past Faye Kirby, but I’m no longer certain they will…”
Half-time: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool
It’s all level at the break!
45 min: Russo moves down the right and this time tries something different as she makes her way into the box. The striker tests Kirby with a powerful strike, forcing the goalkeeper into a strong save and punch clear.
43 min: Another big chance for the Gunners as Maanum drills a low pass across the six-yard box, but there is nobody there to turn it in. Another opportunity missed.
39 min: Defensively, Arsenal have looked shaky so far and Liverpool will want to capitalise on that. The Gunners need to avoid giving the ball away cheaply in midfield, which seems to be their downfall at the moment, along with failing to make the most of the chances they do create.
36 min: The atmosphere has taken a bit of a dip at the Emirates following that goal. The equaliser has really dampened the mood.
32 min: That, quite frankly, was very poor from Arsenal. Enderby plays the ball through to Olsson – who is left in acres of space - with ease. The forward then places her shot past Borbe and into the bottom-right corner.
The goalkeeper probably should’ve done much, much better there. She hasn’t had much to do until now, but she has looked very nervous.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool (Beata Olsson, 30)
Olsson equalises for Liverpool and makes history in the process, becoming the first player to score four goals in her first five WSL starts!
Updated
25 min: Chance for the Gunners as Smith goes for goal from the left side of the box, but it is blocked and Russo strikes with the follow-up, but the visitors can eventually clear.
23 min: Fox sends the ball through to Maanum just outside the box, whose first touch is too heavy and falls to Silcock. The defender then plays a short pass to Kirby, who picks the ball up and thinks nothing of it at first, until Arsenal players appeal for a pass back which, really, should have been given.
Liverpool are lucky to get away with that one.
20 min: Arsenal are fully in control and hunting for a second to calm any nerves that might still be felt around the stadium.
17 min: Smith skips through three Liverpool players before making her way into space and shooting from around 30 yards out. Her effort sneaks into the bottom-left corner to put the Gunners ahead.
The 21-year-old chooses not to celebrate against her former club and instead just accepts some high-fives from her team-mates.
GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool (Olivia Smith, 16)
It just had to be her! Olivia Smith with a screamer!
Updated
14 min: Caldentey floats a cross deep into the box and Wubben-Moy rattles the post with a header from just a few yards out! A huge opportunity missed for Arsenal.
12 min: A long ball is played over to Olsson in attack and Catley mis-judges the header. The Liverpool forward runs through and Borbe comes way out of her box in an attempt to clear, but misses it.
Olsson then goes to ground, perhaps anticipating contact from the goalkeeper, and Arsenal can eventually clear.
That is the first attack Arsenal have faced here, and it could have had disastrous consequences.
9 min: A long ball is played over to Russo, who runs through before cutting it back into the box with a low cross, which doesn’t find anyone at first. Several players follow it in but nothing comes of the attack eventually.
8 min: We’re just eight minutes into this game but Olivia Smith is already playing like she has a point to prove. The young winger is already proving to be a handful for the Liverpool defence on that left side.
6 min: Mead floats the ball into the six-yard box for Wubben-Moy to run onto, but Kirby gets there first to collect.
5 min: Smith is brought down on the edge of the box by Silcock and Arsenal have a free kick in a dangerous position.
3 min: As expected, Smith starts over on the left with Mead on the right. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them switch positions at some point though.
1 min: Arsenal come out of the blocks quickly as Smith and Maanum attack down the left before the midfielder unleashes a shot which is easily saved by Kirby. Maanum probably should have set the ball to Smith there, who had a bit more space in front of her.
Kick-off
We’re under way at the Emirates Stadium!
The teams are out and we’re about to get under way!
A cheeky shout out to my sister-in-law Sarah at her first football match today with my nephew Cillian and their friends Sarah and Lola.
In response to the reporting on Arsenal’s dressing room culture, manager Renee Slegers said she didn’t agree with it but didn’t deny the claims of difficulties, stressing that high performance environments can be “very challenging” and that not “single sports team in the world has things being run perfectly every single day”.
Slegers said: “We won the Champions League, historically we are the most successful club in England. There is noise on the outside, there will always be noise, but on the inside we know what we are doing.
“It is a high-performance environment, it’s a very challenging environment, we demand a lot of things from each other, and it should be like that. It should be like that, if you look internally you see a lot of really, really good things going on.
“Every group of people has to manage things but I am very positive about where we are. I can say that full-heartedly because I am on the inside and can see what is happening.”
She added: “Things aren’t always constantly perfect. I think not a single sports team in the world has things that are being run perfectly every single day. But we have a really good process and we know where we’re at at the moment and we know where we want to go.”
Despite the noise following The Athletic’s reporting into friction in the Arsenal squad, much of which the Guardian understands to be accurate, and Arsenal’s stuttered start to the season that has left them eight points off leaders Manchester City, the Emirates stadium mood on matchdays isn’t dampened. Arsenal’s WSL home for the women continues to have a buzz. Kids pose by the cannons outside The Armoury shop. Adults, male and female, flow towards the stadium in their ones and twos and threes. Names of women’s players on the backs of shirts are just the norm. It’s a testament to the work done to really get the club fanbase to embrace the women’s team. The Block by Block project run with the supporter’s group to stamp the women’s team on the identity of the ground is also elevating the matchday experience. Now, they need the play on the pitch, and culture of the dressing room, to match the vibe off it.
16-year-old midfielder Maizie Trueman could become the youngest player to appear for Liverpool Women if she comes off the bench today – which is likely to happen considering they only have five subs.
Arsenal will move back into the top three with a win today. It’s crucial they get three points if they want to remain in contention for the title – which is already a huge ask at this point in the season.
Arsenal stars Alessia Russo, Mariona Caldentey and Leah Williamson were named in the top 10 of The Guardian’s 100 best female footballers in the world for this year.
Caldentey was ranked second, only behind Spain team-mate Aitana Bonmati. Russo was ranked third, with Williamson 10th. Chloe Kelly finished just outside the top 10 in 11th.

Olivia Smith and Taylor Hinds start for Arsenal against their former club at the Emirates. Both players joined the Gunners this summer from Liverpool.
Hinds starts at left-back, while Smith is likely to line up on the left wing opposite Beth Mead, although the attacking duo could swap places during the game.
Liverpool have just five players on the bench today. Just one injury this afternoon could seriously hamper them…
