Leicester 0-3 Manchester City, Spurs 2-1 Aston Villa, and more: WSL clockwatch – as it happened

Manchester City completed a ninth WSL win in 10 as Tottenham left it late to sink the 10 players of Aston Villa

Reaction from Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw after scoring two goals and providing an assist in their 3-0 victory:

“We got the chances but some of them were a bit rushed, and we just had to find the right pockets and find the right spaces that we’ve been working on in the week. The players that came on did brilliantly.

“I got a lot of chances in the first half, [I was] frustrated with myself, I should have had more on the scoresheet, but all in all, the job was to get the three points, whatever that looked like. We got that done and now we move onto the next game.”

And that’s a wrap on a busy WSL lunchtime clockwatch. My fingers are numb from typing out all those late goals. Still, glad we got plenty of entertainment in the end, albeit no big surprises with Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham all finding a way to win. The contest between London City Lionesses and Brighton was always going to be tight.

You would expect Chelsea to see out a shock-free afternoon when they host Everton shortly at Kingsmeadow. They’ll need three points to maintain the pressure on City at the summit.

Thanks for joining us. Tom Garry’s report will land here at some stage in the afternoon. Until next time!

Here’s how the Women’s Super League table looks after those matches.

FT: Manchester United 2-1 West Ham

After defeats by three-goal margins in their past two outings – to Wolfsburg in the Champions League and to Manchester City in the WSL – Manchester United are back on the winning trail.

West Ham didn’t make it easy for them this afternoon, with Shekiera Martinez cancelling out Elisabeth Terland’s goal, but Dominique Janssen’s free-kick ensured all three points go to the home side.

United leap back above Arsenal, into third place.

Added time: There’s been some canny play by United to frustrate West Ham in the final few minutes. A bit of keep-ball to ensure the visitors don’t get a sniff.

Right, there’s just a few minutes left at Leigh Sports Village and it’s Manchester United who look the more likely to nab the next goal and wrap up a much-needed win over West Ham.

Marc Skinner’s side will go back into third if they do see this out.

The early game in the Premier League has just kicked off. Daniel Harris is your man for updates.

FT: Leicester 0-3 Manchester City

City have now won nine of their opening 10 games, extending their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League to six points – with Chelsea now under the pump to try and reduce that to three when they kick-off against Everton shortly.

City were frustrated for a long time by Leicester, but eventually found their feet late into the game, completing a deserved win.

GOAL! Leicester 0-3 Manchester City (Kerolin, 90+5_

Kerolin gets her goal!

It’s a brilliant dart behind the Leicester defence, she’s fed by Shaw’s pass and the Brazilian applies a cute finish to complete the victory for the WSL leaders.

FT: London City Lionesses 0-1 Brighton

London City had a lot of the ball, especially in the second half as they chased the game following that early Kiko Seike goal, but they couldn’t find an equaliser.

The win takes Brighton to 14 points, just a point behind the hosts.

FT: Tottenham 2-1 Aston Villa

Tottenham flattered to deceive for a long time, they actually went 1-0 down after 85 minutes against the 10 players, but they found some inspiration late in the game – first via Beth England and then through Olivia Holdt’s fine winner. Deslandes’ red card for Villa proved costly in the end.

Spurs, who remain fifth, go level on points with Arsenal.

Into added time at Bromley with Brighton still holding that slender advantage over London City Lionesses. Not a classic, this one.

GOAL! Tottenham 2-1 Aston Villa (Holdt, 90+5)

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Tottenham find that precious second strike!

Olivia Holdt makes a sublime run into the box and it’s a delightful finish inside the near post which has surely won it for the home side. Holdt actually goes down with cramp in the celebrations, but she won’t care much about that in the grand scheme of things.

Kerolin has made an almighty difference for Manchester City this afternoon and, with four minutes plus added time left at the King Power, the Brazilian is denied a goal off the bench by Leitzig. A strong stop by the Leicester custodian.

EIGHT minutes of added time at Brisbane Road. Grab your popcorn.

GOAL! Leicester 0-2 Manchester City (Shaw, 84)

Like London buses for Bunny Shaw. The striker nods home her second of the afternoon from Lauren Hemp’s corner and that should be the game wrapped up for the WSL leaders.

That’s Shaw’s ninth league goal of the season and fourth in her past three games.

Into added time in the Spurs v Aston Villa game. Will the flurry of late goals continue in this encounter?

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 West Ham (Janssen, 71)

71 minutes on the clock at Leigh as Manchester United's Anna Sandberg and Dominique Janssen stand over a decent free-kick opening … and the latter scores it! What a fantastic right-footed effort, that was in from the moment she struck it.

Lead = restored.

Talk about a grandstand finish. Brisbane Road is seeing some late entertainment after 80-odd minutes of pretty tepid stuff. Spurs will fancy their chances of nicking all three points now.

Three or four minutes left, plus added time.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa (England, 85)

Oh wow that didn’t take long! Beth England has levelled almost immediately for Tottenham.

A lovely glancing header from the Spurs captain, who pounds her chest and races back to the halfway line, keen for more goals.

Updated

We’ve finally got goals in every game now! Three 1-0s and that 1-1 at Leigh Sports Village – where there’s still plenty of time for either team to conjure up a winner.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa (Hanson, 84)

A goal for the 10 players of Aston Villa against the run of play! Brilliant speed from Kirsty Hanson to latch onto a long ball over the top, and then a stabbed finish into the corner.

Chelsea v Everton team news

Chelsea: Peng, Carpenter, Girma, Bronze, Baltimore, Walsh, Hamano, James, Thompson, Macario, Beever-Jones.

Everton: Brosnan, Kitagawa, Fernandez, Mace, Ishikawa, Wheeler, Hayashi, Momiki, Payne, Vignola, Gago.

This one kicks off at 2.30pm, UK time.

Leicester will be kicking themselves. They’ve worked so hard in this match, but they’re in danger of completely unravelling now. Kerolin has made things happen since coming off the bench.

GOAL! Leicester 0-1 Manchester City (Shaw, 73)

If at first you don’t succeed …

It’s come via an error from Boureille, a complete air-kick that allows the ball to drop to Shaw, the striker who this time turns and buries her finish low into the net. Relief for City!

70 mins: Bunny Shaw goes again with a header. This one is by no means simple, she was under pressure and a good few yards out, but nods a spiralling ball onto the roof of the net.

69 mins: Brazilian Kerolin is the next attacking impact player to be introduced for City at the King Power, replacing the rather subdued Miedema.

Spurs 0-0 Aston Villa: It doesn’t look great for Jess Naz, who has been a livewire for Tottenham this afternoon but has just been stretchered off the pitch after a worrying knock. Martha Thomas replaces her.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 West Ham (Martinez, 53)

There is the sucker punch United would have feared! It’s Shekiera Martinez who has levelled with a superb effort.

Silence befalls Leigh Sports Village.

64 mins: City have got some firepower on the bench and it’s no surprise to see Grace Clinton introduced for Blindkilde Brown in midfield. Laura Coombs would be another option for Jeglertz in a similar area of the pitch.

RED CARD! Océane Deslandes (Aston Villa)

This may make things easier for Spurs. Deslandes has flown into a tackle on Tottenham’s Olivia Holdt and the referee, Abigail Byrne, has shown her a second yellow card.

Villa will have to survive the final 20 minutes or so with 10 players.

60 mins: Around half an hour plus stoppage time remaining at the King Power Stadium, then, which will be our main focus for that period of time.

The pattern of this game hasn’t changed from minute one: City possession, City probing, Leicester defending… but no City goals.

“There’s more goals coming,” says Sue Smith on Sky Sports’ WSL multi-view – a great tool to follow all the action. I really hope she’s right.

United v West Ham is back under way too, by the way.

Marc Skinner will be eager to see his side bag a second goal to curb any nervousness.

53 mins: Hasegawa blazes a right-footed free-kick effort over the crossbar for Manchester City. Still 0-0.

58 minutes have gone at Brisbane Road now and the Aston Villa defence shuffles one way and then the other, denying what has been a very blunt Spurs attack. Beth England wears a frustrated expression on her face.

48 mins: It’s been more of the same since Leicester v Manchester City resumed. The visitors bossing the ball, carving out chance after chance, but failing to convert. Bunny Shaw – who might have had a hat-trick already – miscues another shot. Not her day.

London City Lionesses v Brighton resumes. We’re getting some seriously staggered games this lunchtime. The visitors are 1-0 up at Bromley, don’t forget, via that early Seike strike.

Tottenham v Aston Villa is back under way at Brisbane Road and Spurs have resumed with a real spring in their step, having had the better of a tepid first half without truly challenging Sabrina D’Angelo in the Villa goal.

Spurs can pressurise Arsenal with a win today.

HT: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham.

It’s been far from an ideal afternoon for West Ham so far. They arrived late at Leigh Sports Village due to traffic and they now trail having barely had a kick in that first half – bar the odd counter-attack.

The only silver lining amid the Greater Manchester cloud is that it’s only 1-0 and the situation is still retrievable. They’ll have to play better, mind you.

Three added minutes. Can West Ham produce an equaliser from out of the ether?

43 mins: Terland has a big chance to double her tally and the United lead but finds the Hammers’ goalkeeper, Szemik, who makes a smart save.

Toone’s cross is then squirrelled clear as the visitors look to avoid any further damage to the deficit before half-time.

More on that United opener: It came via a good low cross from Anna Sandberg who had charged down the left flank to feed Terland. The Norwegian striker then provided an emphatic finish to make it 1-0.

Five minutes plus added time remaining at LSV.

Half time scores

  • Leicester 0-0 Manchester City

  • London City 0-1 Brighton

  • Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa

It’s Manchester United 1-0 West Ham after around 40 minutes. We can only hope for more entertainment and action in the second halves.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 West Ham (Terland, 38)

United finally find the goal their dominance has warranted! Elisabeth Terland had previously squandered a good few chances but makes no mistake on this occasion.

Updated

45 mins + 4: The Leicester central defensive trio of Janice Cayman, Chantelle Swaby and Celeste Boureille can be pretty chuffed with their half’s work so far. Only a few more minutes of added time to survive…

The half-time whistle has gone at Brisbane Road and it’s Tottenham 0-0 Aston Villa.

Some EIGHT minutes have been added on at the King Power. A result of those numerous injury stoppages.

Heading towards first-half added time. Can City find a way through this stubborn Leicester defence? Can we have a goal anywhere else?

Only half an hour has surpassed at United, of course.

41 mins: A huge save from Leitzig at her near post! That’s yet another chance for City gone begging. Miedema must have thought she’d scored after latching onto Knaak’s header.

39 mins: Leicester enjoy a rare foray forward, with Ale a good outlet for them on the right flank but it comes to little…

It’s been a bit stop-start in the past few minutes due to various knocks. Miedema seems to be struggling with something.

Come on teams, give us another goal …

34 mins: Leicester have been forced into an early change with Emily Van Egmond coming on for Hlin Eiriksdottir in midfield.

In other news… Bunny Shaw has put yet ANOTHER chance off target, this time heading over from six or seven yards.

Fully triple-screening now with the games involving the Manchester clubs and Spurs v Villa… although I realise that means I’m focussing on the three games that haven’t actually had a goal.

Manchester United should be 1-0 up through Terland but somehow Kinga Szemik has made a superb save in the West Ham goal to keep it goalless. Dominique Janssen also fired the rebound wide for United when it looked easier to score. Good grief.

30 mins: Jess Naz is causing Villa a good few problems in that game at Brisbane Road, forcing a yellow card challenge from the defender Océane Deslandes. Whenever I watch Spurs I’m always impressed by the attacking interplay between Naz and Beth England.

28 mins: Lauren Hemp rises high at the back post and heads it into a good area, but – as has been the story for City so far – there’s nobody there to bury the resulting chance.

The visitors continue to probe. How long can Leicester continue this laudable level of resistance?

25 minutes gone in three of these games now, with the only goal coming from Brighton’s Kiko Seike at London City.

Spurs have created the better openings against Aston Villa but have been unable to break through. The same can definitely be said for City at Leicester. They would have expected to score by now.

22 mins: Back at the King Power, Leicester have won their first corner of the game, with O’Brien almost poking home at the near post after a smart run to escape her marker. Wide.

United have started strongly against West Ham with Hinata Miyazawa whizzing the first chance of the game just past the post, possibly via a deflection. The Japanese midfield metronome is enjoying a really impressive season.

Penalty saved by London City’s Spanish goalkeeper, Elene Lete!

It was a sloppy tackle by Wassa Sangaré to concede the spot-kick, but Brighton’s Madison Haley – who was fouled to earn the penalty – could not find a way beyond a sprawling Lete. Still just 1-0 to the visitors.

18 mins: It feels like Leicester are growing into this a touch. They’ve been a bit sharper snapping into the tackles in the past few minutes and there is at least an outlet via centre-forward Shannon O’Brien.

City have to be a bit slicker to break them down.

United v West Ham is now under way.

Marc Skinner’s side cannot afford to lose any more points after a rocky run of recent form.

14 mins: City continue to build and Cayman is forced to bundle it away for a corner as Hasegawa tries to play through Hemp.

It’s pinball in the box after that corner and Bunny Shaw really should have made it 1-0 after the ball fell kindly to her. Goodness me, how has she put that wide?

Updated

10 mins: Janice Cayman will be key to defying City today and she does well to hold off Miedema deep into her own territory.

City still well on top at the King Power, with Leicester seeking to keep bodies behind the ball.

Rick Passmoor demanded determined defending from his Leicester troops before kick-off but we’ve not seen anything of the kind in these early stages. It seems like a matter of ‘when’ Manchester City score, rather than ‘if’.

GOAL! London City 0-1 Brighton (Seike, 6)

After a quiet start in Bromley in that game between the two middle-ranks, Kiko Seike breaks the deadlock for Brighton! It came from a rapid counter-attack.

Updated

4 mins: Another chance as City easily work it into the box from the left, with Vivianne Miedema turning but shooting straight at the Leicester goalkeeper, Janina Leitzig.

City are wearing their change strip, which is mostly grey with fluorescent socks. It’s a novel look.

Updated

2 mins: An early chance for Manchester City as a diagonal to the marauding Kerstin Casparij starts a move that ends with Bunny Shaw scuffing wide. Not the best defending from Leicester, there, leaving too much space in their own box.

KICK OFF

Leicester v Man City, Spurs v Villa and London City v Brighton all get off and running. Let’s do this thing.

“We’ve made this a fortress over the past few years,” Leicester boss Rick Passmoor tells Sky Sports before kick-off. “We know the fans here will back us and make a noise.

“It’s important that we’re resilient off the ball and deliver our game-plan from the first whistle. I want to show the true identity of Leicester City, so the minimum is the work rate and the togetherness, and to be ruthless in the final third when we get the opportunity.”

We’re going to start our coverage by focussing on Manchester City, the league leaders, and their clash at Leicester.

Remember United v West Ham will not kick off until 12.15. We’ll have updates and goal flashes from all the games, of course.

Sky Sports have asked a good few WSL stars what their favourite Christmas film is and it seems Home Alone is the majority pick. A film made in 1990 – before many of the players were born! That shows how the standard of Christmas films has dropped in the past 30 years.

Not much love for Love Actually, which is disappointing.

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner has gone strong with his team today. Whenever he has rotated this season it hasn’t really worked – and depth remains a big issue for this United squad, who have dropped off after a stunning start to the season.

The prospect of Jess Park, Melvine Malard, Ella Toone and Elisabeth Terland playing together in a fluid front four should be a really exciting one for United fans. It’s also a big boon for them to have Phallon Tullis-Joyce back in goal, as she returns from a fractured eye socket – she’ll play in a protective mask.

West Ham are without recently-capped England defender Anouk Denton, which could be a big loss. They’ve won just once in nine WSL outings this season.

Kerstin Casparij takes the captain’s armband for Manchester City at the King Power Stadium today. City can put a healthy six-point buffer between themselves and title rivals Chelsea at the WSL summit by beating Leicester today. Chelsea, of course, will be hoping to cut that lead – praying for a slip-up from Andrée Jeglertz’s team.

Manchester United v West Ham team news

Belatedly, here’s how United will line up at the Progress with Unity Stadium, AKA Leigh Sports Village, at that slightly later kick-off time.

Manchester United: Tullis-Joyce, Sandberg, Le Tissier, Toone, Park, Malard, Terland, Riviere, Janssen, Zigiotti, Miyazawa.

The West Ham team has not yet been announced. It’ll be revealed here when it is.

And here it is …

West Ham: Szemik, Endo, Siren, Tysiak, Ueki, Nystrom, Martinez, Asseyi, Gorry, Morgan, Hanshaw.

Updated

Manchester United have announced that their game against West Ham will kick off at 12.15pm (GMT) – 15 minutes later than originally scheduled, because of “logistical issues affecting the arrival time of the visiting team”.

The clubs have apologised for any inconvenience caused to supporters by the late change in timings. Team news for that contest will follow.

Preamble

Welcome along to another packed Women’s Super League Sunday. These smorgasbords of midday starts are becoming quite the fixture in the WSL calendar nowadays and they’re usually lots of fun.

Today, Manchester United host West Ham at Leigh Sports Village, with Marc Skinner’s side looking to jump back into the top three with three points, while there are mid-table clashes between Spurs and Aston Villa, and London City and Brighton. Manchester City can (and very much should) extend their lead at the summit with victory at Leicester. Chelsea face Everton a little later, potentially looking to capitalise on any dropped points from City.

Let’s get right into it. Team news will follow.
