New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged incident earlier this month, as a Massachusetts judge considers whether key court records should remain sealed ahead of his arraignment.
Diggs, 32, is charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery in connection with an incident alleged to have occurred on 2 December, according to court filings. A motion hearing was held Tuesday morning in Dedham District Court, where Diggs’ attorney appeared remotely to request that police reports and related documents be impounded.
Defense lawyer Michael R DiStefano argued that releasing the records at this stage would create a substantial risk of prejudicing the case through widespread publicity. He also told the court that Diggs’ legal team is engaged in discussions aimed at reaching a financial resolution with the alleged victim.
“As we speak, they’re working to come to an agreement on that,” DiStefano said.
The judge took the request to impound the documents under advisement and said a ruling would be issued shortly. The court is also considering a defense request to push Diggs’ arraignment from 23 January to March. As currently scheduled, the arraignment would take place two days before the AFC championship game.
In a statement, the Patriots said Diggs has denied the allegations and that the organization is monitoring the situation.
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs,” the team said. “Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary.”
Diggs, a veteran wide receiver acquired by New England last offseason, has been the Patriots’ leading pass catcher this year, recording 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns. New England (13-3) clinched its first AFC East title since 2019 over the weekend and can secure a first-round playoff bye with a Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins and a Denver Broncos loss.
Diggs and his girlfriend, recording artist Cardi B, welcomed a baby boy in November.
Additional details about the alleged incident were not immediately available. Diggs is scheduled to be arraigned on 23 January unless the court grants the defense’s request for a delay.
