Thanks for joining me.
Here is Ben Fisher’s report from the big one.
Ruben Amorim: “I think we started really well, we scored the goal and let Wolfes back in. We suffered late in the first half. In the second half we showed quality and Wolves are in a difficult moment, so it was a good game.
“We are creating more chances and scoring more goals compared to last season.
“They have the quality to do that, change positions, especially if you play Cunha, who moves more than a normal No 9.
“I really enjoyed the way we played the second half.”
Mason Mount: “It was an important win for us. First half we let them back in. We went frustrated and disappointed, the manager had a few things to say. We needed to attack with purpose. Overall very happy.
“Attacking with freedom, some of the combinations were crisp and sharp. It is about us creating as many chances as we can as forward players.
“As a team we are definitely improving and we need to keep winning games.
“It’s good to be back out there, feeling good at the moment.”
Ben Fisher was at Molineux for the full 101 minutes of football.
Burton beat Brackley in the FA Cup, just in case you were wondering.
Richard emails: “I guess that as undignified as it is, with the table being so close for a change, goal difference might make the difference between a Europe and not-Europe position? That’s just devil’s advocacy btw - I agree that it doesn’t look very nice.”
Aye, no one cared there tonight.
Wolves have two points and will be bottom at Christmas. What a dreadful start to the season.
Boos greet the hilariously delayed full-time whistle.
United will be desperate that United’s front three and Fernandes can continue with this sort of performance.
Full time! Wolves 1-4 Man United
United move up to sixth after a dominant second half performance. Wolves, on the other hand, are rock bottom having now gone 15 games without a win.
90+7 mins: Zirkzee is booked for an indiscretion. These extra minutes have cost him a few quid.
The Wolves fans are cheering every touch.
90+5 mins: We are still going and no one really knows why.
Lopez whacks a shot over from 20 yards to give the fans something to cheer. Not many are left, mind.
Mount is given the man of the match award.
90+4 mins: “Was there something going on between a couple of United players during the celebrations after that penalty?” asks Bill Muskett. “I thought I caught something in the corner of the screen.”
I did see this interaction between Martinez and Amad, so did a quick rewind. It looked lighthearted and good-natured.
90+2 mins: I am of the opinion that when a side has a three goal lead, the opponent should be asked if they want any time added on.
90+2 mins: The Wolves fans are singing for the final whistle to be blown.
90+1 mins: The match officials are taking the mick here. Why would anyone want a further nine minutes of this? I can’t even remember any delays?
90 mins: Nine minutes added on. WHY?!
88 mins: United are doing their best to make sure Wolves do not touch the ball before the final whistle. The visitors are knocking the ball around with ease, while the remaining home supporters file out.
86 mins: Things have clicked in the final third in this half for United. Naturally, the opposition will be considered but the front three – and Fernandes behind – seem to be on the same wavelength.
Tchatchoua on for Hoever.
Matt Sutton gets in touch: “Emailing to say I don’t understand the argument that Michael, and many others are making. How can you claim Amorim should be sacked for playing Fernandes in central midfield, when he’s been the best player on the pitch, in that position? He’s having, statistically, one of his best seasons and, crucially, playing him there has allowed space for Cunha and Mbeumo behind the striker - both of whom are having good seasons themselves.”
84 mins: United have been the far better side this half. Wolves are just lacking in any level of quality.
Instead of a debut for Lacey, we get Zirkzee and Dorgu coming on. Dalot and Mount off.
“The first one was more a penalty than this one. What a mess,” suggests Tim Stappard.
GOAL! Wolves 1-4 Man United (Fernandes, pen, 82)
The captain finds the bottom corner.
Updated
81 mins: Michael Salisbury says it is a “deliberate handball” but that looks like nonsense.
80 mins: PENALTY! We are having an on-field review for this. It is Amad’s shot that hits him on his elbow it looks like he is trying to get his arm out of the way but the officials seem to think he is moving it in the way.
Updated
79 mins: Mainoo gets one of the biggest cheers of the night when it comes on. He is in the box to attack a Fernandes corner, which finds Amad at the back post, from where he has two shots in quick succession, both being blocked. VAR is checking for a handball …
78 mins: United have a free-kick right on the edge of the box after a foul on Mount. Fernandes looks most eager of the five around the ball, but he clips is just over via a deflection off the wall.
Mainoo is coming on for Casemiro.
76 mins: United break once more, Fernandes tries to pick out a marauding Amad but Johnstone comes to claim.
If Amorim wants a PR win, this would be a good time to bring on Shea Lacey for his debut.
74 mins: Cunha has had eight shots in the match! That is the second most of any single player in a Premier League match.
72 mins: A nice moment for former Rochdale man Mane to get come up against United, having moved to Manchester as a youngster.
“Bruno Fernandes showing why Amorim needs to play him as a number 10,” says Michael. “Turning down $100m+ from Saudi Arabia for and then playing him in central defensive midfielder is the sort of thing that should cost someone their job.”
70: I suspect plenty of Wolves fans will miss the final 15 minutes of the match too at this rate. United are completely on top and Wolves do not have the answers.
Wolves send on Mane, Arokodare and Hugo Bueno on Toti, Strand Larsen, Arias off. The removal of Strand Larsen is greeted with applause. The poor lad can’t do much with no service, not that he did much otherwise.
United send on Yoro and Martinez on, Mazraoui and Heaven off.
67 mins: Almost a fourth as Mount finds Fernandes in space, the captain tries to pick out Cunha for a tap in but Agbadou intervenes.
And again … Fernandes lifts a cross in this time, again with Cunha as the target but his diving header is well stopped by Johnstone.
Wolves look cooked.
65 mins: That really must be game over and an eighth straight defeat for Wolves. If United throw this away, they might as well pack up and take up croquet instead.
An Andre free-kick causes some concern in the box but Mazraoui gets it back to the goalkeeper.
GOAL! Fernandes sees a goalbound shot blocked on the egde of the six-yard box, but the captain recovers, wanders out of the box to retrieve the ball. He chips a cross into the box and Mount calmly volleys home from close range.
GOAL! Wolves 1-3 Man United (Mount, 62)
Something like that will help.
Updated
61 mins: United really need to show they can turn the screw when in the lead. They let things slip in the first half and cannot afford to do so again. This Wolves team are not very good and if United have anything about them, they should be able to prove it.
59 mins: Mosquera winds up again but the ball is headed straight back to him, forcing him to cross which he does with the grace of a centre-back.
57 mins: Shaw puts United under pressure with some loose play on the edge of his own box. Fer Lopez nips in but Heaven is there to clean up.
Mosquera lobs a long throw into the United box … there is some lighthearted pinball but United clear. The ball comes back, causing greater panic until Mazraoui whacks it upfield.
55 mins: Can Wolves come back again? Without Bellegarde on, someone else really needs to step up.
53 mins: In more bad news for Wolves, Bellegarde is down needing treatment. He has been Wolves’ most dangerous player by far. Fer Lopez is being readied to come on.
GOAL! It had been coming. United are much improved. Cunha sends a pass through for Dalot, who taps it across to Mbeumo, giving him an easy chance with Johnstone stranded.
Updated
GOAL! Wolves 1-2 Man United (Mbeumo, 52)
United score on the counter.
Updated
51 mins: Wolves need to be in United’s faces and make them afraid of losing. Molineux is a little quiet at the moment and could do with a bit more noise.
Mount whacks a cracking pass to Mbeumo, who slips in Cunha. The Brazilian can’t get his shot away and Agbadou gets back, meaning the effort is weak. Cunha claims a penalty but nothing is doing.
49 mins: Cunha is in a race with Johnstone to reach a through ball first. The goalkeeper gets there first but cannot claim, allowing Mbeumo a shot at a goalkeeper-less goal, only to see some gold shirts in his way.
47 mins: Krejci is cautioned for pulling back Fernandes. Wolves really need to keep 11 on the pitch here.
Amad ducks in and out of a couple of challenges before laying the ball off to Cunha on the edge of the box but the shot is high and wild.
Second half
Here we go again!
Chris has been in touch: “United goal shouldn’t have stood either. Not because of the foul but due to its incredibly low quality.”
United’s front three do have the quality but do not look like a cohesive unit at the moment.
“Wolves’ defending hasn’t been good, but neither has United’s,” pens Kári Tulinius. “The latter have much better attackers, but if they keep allowing the opposition to pass it around the penalty box, Wolverhampton will score another. It’s like the Mancunians just assumed the Old Gold were incapable of scoring, so wouldn’t have to defend.”
Jonathan emails: “From penalties being given out for any touch inside the box, feels like we’ve swung too far the other direction. Agbadou is stood far back from the shot and leans into the path of the ball to deflect it with his arm. I thought the change was implemented to not penalize defenders who did not have time to get out of the way, not to allow them to make themselves bigger to purposefully block a shot or pass.”
Joshua Keeling ponders: “Fourteen shots and five on target, versus three shots and 1 on target for Wolves. United should be out of sight. Why oh why do we have to make it so hard for ourselves?”
Half time! Wolves 1-1 Man United
United set their own downfall by not doing more to add to their opener. Wolves and Molineux is alive for the first time in a while.
GOAL! Wolves have got into the game recently but not offered much threat. In the end, Hoever pings a cross to the back post, which Moller Wolfe sends towards the penalty area and a sliding Bellegarde pokes home.
GOAL! Wolves 1-1 Man United (Bellegarde 45+2)
LORDY!
Updated
45 mins: Two minutes added on.
44 mins: Getting into the break only a goal behind would be good news for Wolves.
In less good news, Strand Larsen is booked for a late challenge on Heaven.
42 mins: United break through Mbeumo but Moller Wolfe does well to get back at him.
It allows Wolves to counter, culminating with Bellegarde whacking a shot wide from the edge of the box. The Wolves fans have some hope.
40 mins: Arias turns the ball round the corner for Andre, who is in a good position but his cross is just ahead of Strand Larsen.
John Peeler: “It will take a generous act of Heaven for Wolves to Hoever up a goal here. I wonder how long they can Hwang on?”
Does Peter Oh have a pseudonym?
38 mins: Fernandes works a short corner on the left, sending in a cross which Johnstone clears. Amad picks up the ball on the left and fires a shot at goal which hits Agbadou on the arm and flies wide. VAR has a quick look but it’s not a penalty.
Mbeumo is booked for clattering into Arias.
36 mins: Just a reminder that Wolves have failed to score in their past five games. They do not look like ending that streak.
United are back in possession. Dalot clips a cross in with the outside of his right book but Toti just beats Cunha to the ball at the back post. The corner is headed onto the roof of his own net by Strand Larsen.
34 mins: Lammens catches a cross but is fouled by Strand Larsen in the process.
33 mins: Wolves enjoy a vaguely creative moments thanks to a smart pass from Bellegarde but Moller Wolfe’s cross is intercepted.
31 mins: Bellegarde sends a pass through for Arias to chase. He claims Heaven has pulled him down, the referee gives nothing and then the flag goes up to remove any doubt.
29 mins: The goal has also taken away the anger from the Wolves fans, who are understandably dejected. They were calling for the owners to go but are enduring a few moments of apathy.
It should be two! Mbeumo goes through after a sliding pass from Fernandes. The first shot is blocked, then Cunha’s rebound is cleared off the line and Amad eventually shoots wide.
27 mins: There is not aggression within this Wolves team, they’re passive all over the pitch. United just need to bide their time and they will get more.
GOAL! Andre is caught in possession facing his own goal by Casemiro. The United man finds Cunha on the edge of the box, he tees up Fernandes, but he falls over, eventually bundling home while lying on the ground. Can Wolves forfeit the rest of the season now?
GOAL! Wolves 0-1 Man United (Fernandes, 25)
What a gloriously shambolic goal.
Updated
24 mins: Bellegarde is needlessly cleaned out of the touchline by Mazraoui while running the ball out of play.
23 mins: United are looking the more dangerous by far at Molineux. They’ve enjoyed some neat touches in and around the box but Wolves are able to get in the way of crosses.
“Apologies in advance, but the two Buenos among the Wolves substitutes are two good to just sit on the bench,” ‘jokes’ Peter Oh. “I’ll get my winter coat now.”
22 mins: I watched a lot of Wolves last season and most of my work centred around Wolves being capable of winning if Cunha had a good game. They do miss having someone of quality at at the club, that’s for sure. This team offers very little.
20 mins: Dalot comes over to the right to launch a long throw. By hook or by crook, Wolves do manage to get it clear.
“|I think Manchester United could have skipped the first 15 minutes and they’d still win, given Wolves showing so far,” writes Justin Kavanagh.
18 mins: The Wolves fans are quite noisy, referring to Jeff Shi as a … ermmm … naughty word.
16 mins: Here come the remaining fans …
They are treated to a mix up between Lammens and Heaven, but United escape without a severe incident.
Updated
15 mins: Andre slings a cross in from the right but it is cleared at the front post. Maybe Wolves will never score again. Johnstone sends another clearance straight out of play.
14 mins: Bellegarde jumps up to challenge Casemiro with a high boot and catches the Brazilian on the toe, much to the United midfielder’s chagrin.
Wolves win a corner …
12 mins: Maybe the Wolves players will get a boost when the rest of their fans get into the stands in a few minutes …
11 mins: Lee McDonagh is doing his bit: “In a slightly futile show of solidarity, I’m boycotting the first 15 mins on Sky, well as a London based Wolves fan I couldn’t get there in time to actually be late.”
10 mins: The resulting corner eventually reaches Mbeumo at the back post. His volley looks to be flying in but Johnstone reacts smartly again.
Mazraoui is the next United player to have a shot, earning a corner for his effort. Johnstone misses it this time and Wolves are lucky not to suffer a terrible fate.
Mazraoui is down and wants treatment after a challenge from Arias.
8 mins: Johnstone tries to clear the ball but whacks it straight out of play. Wolves just look like a very meek football team.
They are almost behind thanks to a long ball over the top by Fernandes which Dalot latches onto. The wing-back goes through on goal but Johnstone produces a fine save.
6 mins: United win the first corner of the match. Fernandes goes over to take it on the left. The skipper puts it right on top of Johnstone, who is able to punch the ball clear.
4 mins: The shortage of home fans does make the atmosphere a little strange. Molineux is very quiet.
Andre decides to excite everyone by shooting from 30 yards but it is blocked. A timid opening few minutes.
2 mins: There are, as predicted, plenty of empty seats in the stands. The fans are showing their upset with the ownership.
On the pitch, Cunha’s first touch is booed.
Kick off
Peep! Peep! Peep! Here we go!
The players are in the tunnel.
David Bowen writes: “That Carragher soliloquy/diatribe will no doubt be more entertaining than tonight’s fixture.
“Would you class that as a full spleen vent?”
I was worried he’d forgotten to breathe at one point.
Ruben Amorim on team selection: “:We are] trying to get more danger, balance the team, play a little different. I just look at the opponent, the way we trained in the week and maintain the way we want to play.
“We lost too many points this season due to details.
“We need to prove ourselves in the game.”
Jamie Carragher is currently explaining why Mohamed Salah was wrong to throw his verbal hand grenade at the weekend. He’s really not happy.
Justin Kavanagh emails: “Wolves fans can say what they want about Fosun (and they’re probably right), but it’s not all owners who install a quality Subbuteo pitch like that in the home dressing room.”
Matt Burtz emails: “There are some who don’t believe in xG, and that’s fine. For those who do, Wolves’ xG per 90 minutes is -0.44. Not great, but it’s only the fourth worst in the Premier League. (Interestingly enough, it’s ahead of Sunderland’s -0.52.) But the main stat for Wolves is an xG against of 18.9, which is seventh in the PL (and better than that of third place Aston Villa). This means they’ve been incredibly unlucky in keeping goals out. Clearly they need to score more goals as one every two games isn’t going to cut it at any level, but if their luck balances out defensively there is a theoretical chance of them putting some results together.”
It’s a nice theory.
It is the festive season, which means I am now sat next to a Christmas tree with flashing lights.
There are plans for a fan protest by Wolves supporters at Molineux tonight. Those attending are urged to stay outside for the first 15 minutes to show their anger against Fosun and its ownership of the club.
Cunha’s return is a reminder of what Wolves once had, when they were quite good in the market. Now they are a club that sells their best players and replaces them with people not up to the job.
Dave Easterby writes: “Two points from 14 games and a goal difference of -22 would suggest Amorim’s men have got Wolves covered tonight. Couple of goals, three points, top six, luvvly jubbly.
“But it’s Monday and it’s Man Utd so this has probably got disaster written all over it.
“That poor lad’s NEVER getting his hair cut …”
Matheus Cunha returns to Molineux.
Rob Edwards: “We knew it was going to be tough. Nothing has surprised me. We’ve had three games, we’ve had the good, the in between and no so good. We want to try and find consistency, and be better at both ends of the pitch.
“There’s realism in the conversations we have. We still want to try and be positive but we all know the situation we are in. We have to act quickly.
“We’ve created good chances and had good moments. We want the lads to take risk and arrive in good numbers in those areas. Last time out we did not take risks.”
Pre-match reading.
Starting lineups
Wolves: Johnstone, Hoever, Mosquera, Agbadou, Toti, Wolfe, Andre, Krejci, Bellegarde, Arias, Starand Larsen.
Subs: Sa, H. Bueno, S. Bueno, Hwang, Arokodare, Chirewa, Lopez, Mane, Tchatchoua.
Man United: Lammens, Mazraoui, Heaven, Shaw, Amad, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dalot, Mbeumo, Cunha, Mount.
Subs: Bayindir, Dorgu, Malacia, Martinez, Yoro, Mainoo, Ugarte, Lacey, Zirkzee.
Preamble
Manchester United and Ruben Amorim crave consistency, even more than that poor lad desperate for a haircut. After winning three games in a row in October, they have won once in their past five Premier League matches. The performance against West Ham on Thursday clearly irritated Amorim and he will be wanting a reaction at Molineux.
Thankfully for the visitors, Wolves are pretty awful. They are propping up the table with a miserable two points from 14 matches. Relegation looks a certainty for Rob Edwards and his new side. It is getting to the stage where the pressure is almost off because they do not give off the impression that they will be able to overhaul the three clubs above them even at this relatively early stage.
Let’s hope it is competitive at least.
Kick-off: 8pm GMT
