Callum Wilson is in talks to leave West Ham five months after joining. It is understood the striker has grown dissatisfied with life under Nuno Espírito Santo and wants a new challenge.

Wilson was signed on a cheap incentivised one-year deal and his situation is an apparent sign of wider discontent within the squad over their manager. Nuno, whose side are at increasing risk of relegation from the Premier League, is in danger of losing the dressing room’s support because of concerns over his tactics and man-management.

It is unclear how quickly an agreement will be reached for Wilson to leave West Ham, who are 18th before Tuesday’s pivotal home game against Nottingham Forest. . There are indications the former Newcastle striker’s departure may come towards the end of the transfer window, but is unclear whether as free agent or if West Ham will try to sell him.

West Ham have confirmed the signings of two forwards picked by Nuno: Pablo Felipe from Gil Vicente and Taty Castellanos from Lazio for a combined package of up to £47m. Both could be involved against Forest, who are four points above West Ham. Winger Luis Guilherme, signed from Palmeiras in July 2024, has left permanently this month for Sporting.

Nuno was sacked by Forest last September and quickly returned to management when West Ham fired Graham Potter that month. It is understood West Ham, who suffered a humiliating defeat at Wolves on Saturday, do not plan to sack thim if he loses to his former side. Nuno has won two of his 15 games and multiple sources say he has done little to endear himself to many of his players.

Morale at the club is low and there has been frustration around Nuno’s tactical decisions. Figures within West Ham have been surprised by Nuno’s use of Wilson, who has scored four goals in 18 times. Although it is accepted striker’s physical load needs to be managed carefully, there is a feeling that West Ham are a better side with him and his bit-part role in recent weeks has caused surprise. There was frustration when Wilson was substituted in the 63rd minute of last week’s 2-2 draw against Brighton, leaving West Ham to play without a recognised forward.

Wilson has started the past two games, but was a substitute in the previous four. There was surprise when he did not come on during West Ham’s dismal 2-0 defeat by Brentford in October. Nuno had started without a striker. West Ham produced improved performances when Wilson came into the XI for wins over Newcastle and Burnley in October.
