Report: Salah seals last-16 win
Yasser Ibrahim’s superb header and Mohamed Salah’s breakaway strike earned record seven-time champions Egypt a hard-fought 3-1 extra-time victory over Benin in the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 on Monday.
Egypt led after 69 minutes through a superb 30-yard strike from Marwan Attia, but Benin forced the game into an additional 30 minutes when they equalised late on through Jodel Dossou. Ibrahim, who plays in defence, scored his first international goal on 97 minutes when he met Attia’s cross with a header from 15 yards that looped into the top corner of the net, and Salah raced clear to add the third with the last kick of the game.
Egypt will face the defending champions, Côte d’Ivoire, or Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals in Agadir on Saturday. Reuters

That’ll be all from me. Make sure to tune-in tomorrow for our Algeria v DR Congo MBM. Cheers!
Egypt will face either Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso in the quarter-finals. Benin can at least depart with their first Afcon victory in normal time, having beaten Botswana in the group stage.
Benin were resolute in that first 90, and particularly brilliant after going behind. But they tired in extra time and a well-worked corner did for them, Yasser Ibrahim’s immaculate header setting up the victory. Mo Salah got his 10th goal in Afcon football to wrap it up, his third in this edition.
EXTRA TIME, FULL TIME: Egypt 3-1 Benin
It was far from straightforward for the seven-time winners … but they’re through to the quarters.
Egypt break from a Benin corner, Salah is played in through the middle, and with the keeper way off his line, the Liverpool man calmly slots home from outside the area with the outside of his boot.

GOAL! Egypt 3-1 Benin (Salah 120+4)
It had to be.
Updated
120+2 min: Dandjinou pumps the ball long for Benin … but the punts forward are only finding red shirts.
120+1 min: Benin waste a precious corner; the lively Olaïtan sends the ball out of bounds.
Updated
120 min: Marmoush makes way as Salah has the ball again … he lays off for Ashour on the edge of the area, but the shot flies over the bar.
118 min: Salah breaks down the right, has his shirt pulled but he keeps on going … except the referee stops play for the foul! Salah’s left annoyed; he had plenty of options to play in. His shirt has ripped, too.
117 min: Ashour has the option to dink the ball into the area for Zizo … he opts for the flashy hit from range that ends up high and wide.
116 min: El Shenawy collects a flicked-on header and Benin’s men on the bench are starting to look a bit glum.
115 min: Salah has space on the right but Ashour gives the ball away for Egypt. Benin work the ball beautifully down the left and launch a series of attacks … but a foul on the retreating Salah breaks the momentum.
112 min: It’s in the right channel for Benin, set up for a left-footed strike … the ball is laid off for Tijani to launch but his shot is blocked. That’s a waste.
110 min: Egypt wheel it around in defence, keeping calm … until Tessilimi wins a free-kick on the edge of the area. Huge chance for Benin …
108 min: Attidjikou receives a yellow for a very silly two-footed sliding challenge on Zizo.
106 min: Play resumes, with Marmoush and Salah threatening to cause some trouble as they launch a press against the Benin defence.
Updated
There was handball shout against Ashour from a Benin long throw in that half … but replays suggest the ref made the right call.
EXTRA TIME, HALF TIME: Egypt 2-1 Benin
The players are absolutely knackered. Egypt are 15 minutes away from ending a very tense evening.
105 + 1 min: Egypt camp up in their half, with Yasser Ibrahim sliding in for an interception.
104 min: Marmoush releases Zizo on the left for Egypt before they retreat, keeping hold of the ball.
103 min: Time for a Benin long throw … it’s headed to safety and Salah is back to defend as well.
Updated
101 min: Benin are still waiting for their first chance in extra time.
The corner is played short before a cross is sent in from the left, a curling ball in; Ibrahim, near the penalty spot, opens up his body to guide a header into the top left corner. Sublime work.

GOAL! Egypt 2-1 Benin (Yasser Ibrahim 97)
A lovely, lovely header.
Updated
97 min: Marmoush finally has a sliver of space on the edge of the area … his shot is deflected and out for a corner.
96 min: The long diagonal balls keep on coming from Egypt as they try to get Salah in position to strike.
94 min: Salah overhits a ball to the left wing with his right foot, aiming for Zizo.
93 min: Salah takes down a long diagonal ball, a cute touch inside leaves him in a position for a trademark curler from the right … but a wayward touch breaks the move down.
91 min: Egypt launch down the left, a cross into the area met by a diving, defensive header.
Benin upset Morocco in the last 16 back in 2019, prevailing on penalties. Time for something similar against Afcon’s most successful side?
We're going to extra time
An upset is still on the cards.
Updated
90+6 min: The ball is stuck on Benin’s right wing, throw-ins on repeat.
90+5 min: Salah goes down but play continues … he cuts in and crosses, but a decent ball to the far post beats everyone.
90+3 min: Play resumes as Salah threatens again down the right.
90+2 min: We’ve got seven added minutes though play has been paused; Aloko has been stretchered off for Benin.
90 min: The Benin bench are off the, um, bench, counting down the seconds. Extra time beckons.
89 min: Salah runs in behind on the right, picking up on a dinked ball over the top, he opens up his body to try curl the ball in … but it’s a poor effort straight at the keeper. That’s the closest he’s come to scoring.
87 min: Benin aren’t sitting back here; they want a winner as a testing low ball is played into the Egypt area.
85 min: A reminder that Dossou came on in the first half for the injured Tosin; he could finish tonight as the hero.
GOAL! Egypt 1-1 Benin (Dossou 83)
Oh my days. Olaïtan crosses from the right but it takes a wicked deflection, the ball looping into the net … the wrongfooted El Shenawy dives to make a brilliant save but the sliding Dossou is there for the tap in. Benin are bouncing and, man, do they believe; they’ve been brilliant ever since that Egypt goal.
Updated
81 min: Benin have another corner … again it’s headed away at the near post. The waves of attack keep on coming from the underdogs.
79 min: Oh my: Fathy loses the ball in the middle of the park after receiving a heavy pass and Olaïtan is quick on to it but brought down; Fathy is immediately shown a yellow. That could so easily have been a huge chance for Benin, with plenty of space for Olaïtan to burst into.
77 min: Tessilimi and Attidjikou are on for Benin, with D’Almeida and Dokou making way.
75 min: Egypt are the ones camped inside their own half now as Benin search for an opening.
74 min: Benin have a corner … Olaïtan’s ball in is headed away at the near post before the Benin No 18 wins another corner with a blocked cross.
72 min: Dandjinou collects a cross from the right … moments later El Shenawy is in action to collect from the other end. The game is fully open now.
Egypt build on the right through Salah and Hany, who cuts back from the byline … it seems to be missing everyone until Marwan Attia pops up, on the edge of the area, to launch a first-time curling hit into the top left corner. Relief for the seven-time champions.

GOAL! Egypt 1-0 Benin (Attia 69)
What a hit, son!
Updated
68 min: There’s been a lot of sliding in this match and here comes D’Almeida to end Ashour’s burst down the left wing for Egypt.
67 min: The heist is still on here. Egypt have lost a bit of rhythm in the last few minutes. Dossou’s handball ends a Benin move.
64 min: Very nearly an opener for Benin! A lovely ball is played into the right side of the area, with Dossou getting on the end of it. He can’t slide it past El Shenawy, who makes himself big to cut out and the angle … and hurts himself in the process.
63 min: Salah comes alive with a run into the area, picking up on a bouncing ball … he tries to poke it over the advancing keeper … but the effort results in a simple catch for Dandjinou.
61 min: Benin finally have a chance to wheel the ball around … before Ouorou miscues horribly on the right wing.
Updated
59 min: Time for some tweaks. Ashour replaces Trézéguet and Zizo replaces Ibrahim Adel.
55 min: Nearly for Egypt. The ball breaks for Rabia in the six-yard box, he slams in a strike but Dandjinou makes himself massive; the ball then deflects off Ouorou, on the line, leading to another Egypt corner. Somehow Benin survive.
54 min: Salah slides in a pass for Hany to latch on to, and the right wing-back wins a corner for Egypt.
53 min: Marmoush goes down on the edge of the area but play is waved on.
51 min: Mohamed Hany pumps a cross in from the right wing, but it’s a touch too high. Egypt are looking sharp now as they get forward and turn up the urgency in their play.
50 min: Salah tries to get on the end of a one-two with Marmoush, but the Liverpool forward is blocked off from receiving inside the area.
48 min: Ibrahim Adel barges down the left wing with power and will, but Marmoush can’t keep the attack alive.
46 min: Dossou goes down in midfield before a long ball searches for Aloko, who had a few bright moments down the right wing in the first half.
And we're back
No changes from either side as Egypt get things going.
The closest Egypt came was when Marmoush picked up on a splitting pass through the middle, leaving him one-on-one and trying to round the keeper … Dandjinou held his nerve with a sliding challenge to win out. The key blow for Egypt was the injury sustained by Mohamed Hamdy, the left wing-back, when he landed awkwardly after raising his boot high for a challenge.
Updated
Not a half of thrills, with a couple of enforced substitutions disrupting the flow. Benin will be mighty pleased though, still in a position to nick this with a counterattack.
HALF-TIME: Egypt 0-0 Benin
Mo Salah closes the half with a Maradona turn but Benin remain untroubled. That sums up the half, with Egypt offering glimpses of danger but unable to properly test Dandjinou.
45+4 min: Egypt wheel it around before Benin counter … Hamdy Fathy is back quick to deliver a sliding interception.
Updated
45+2 min: We’ve got five minutes of added time; Hamdy has been replaced by Abou El Fotouh.
45 min: Hamdy landed very awkwardly there and he looks in a world of pain as he’s taken off.
43 min: Hamdy is down, too after raising his boot and it looks like he’s done some damage to himself; he’s going to be stretchered off.
41 min: Oh dear, there’s a boot raised high in midfield but the referee lets play continue … eventually we press pause with two men down, the medics called on. The hight foot was from Mohamed Hamdy and the man to suffer a blow to the face was Aloko.
40 min: Salah whips a ball in but it lacks depth as Benin stay strong.
39 min: Dokou battles away with red shirts all around him in midfield, but he commits a foul and Egypt have a free-kick in the right channel, Salah and Marmoush over it.
36 min: Benin venture down the right, with Ouorou breaking into the area … no one meets his cutback. Egypt counter, their move breaking down as Marmoush goes down on their right, no foul called. It’s an open contest at present.
34 min: Salah finds a few inches of space going forward and tries to sneak a dinked ball into the area, but Benin cut it out.
33 min: Yasser Ibrahim pings a lovely diagonal ball into the Benin area, but Ibrahim Adel can’t add to the danger.
30 min: Tosin is down for Benin and trudges off with an injury; Jodel Dossou replaces the No 10.
29 min: It’s been a pretty feisty game so far, and Attia gets a yellow for a reckless foul on the halfway line, sliding in from behind on poor D’Almeida; no need for that at all.
28 min: Marmoush is getting about, drifting around that forward line … before Yasser Ibrahim delivers a perfect sliding challenge at the back for Egypt.
27 min: Marmoush is crowded out on Egypt’s right wing as Benin regain control of the ball. A yellow card is brandished against Olaïtan after his elbow goes up with Yasser Ibrahim when leaping for a high ball.
25 min: Marmoush nicely collects a ball down the right channel … but the offside flag is up.
23 min: Benin have more than enough to give Egypt’s high line a scare.
20 min: Egypt venture down the left and a low ball in prompts chaos; Mo Salah can’t get a strike away and Marmoush rushes forward to poke at the ball … there’s no power on his effort as Benin clear.
19 min: Yasser Ibrahim heads away as Benin continue to go down the long-ball route … before Aloko bursts down the right wing, cuts in … but overdoes it and can’t get a shot away.
17 min: Olaïtan decides to shoot, but it was too far out for a curling effort – he hits it straight to El Shenawy.
16 min: Hamdy Fathy shoves Tosin and Benin have a free-kick in the left channel, the ball ready to be whipped in to the area …
Updated
15 min: Benin have a chance to launch a long throw with Olaïtan to deliver from the left. It’s flicked on inside the area before Egypt clear.
13 min: Rami Rabia gets a yellow for a rather ridiculous handball near the halfway line, palming away the ball with his left hand.
10 min: Dandjinou is in the action once again, rushing out to clean up a dangerous diagonal ball into the area.
8 min: A lovely diagonal ball finds Olaïtan on the left, and he plays to the overlapping Roche as Benin begin to look dangerous … but a through ball leaves Omar Marmoush in a one-on-one with Dandjinou … he holds on for too long as the keeper gets out and makes himself big. You’d expect better from the Manchester City forward.
6 min: Benin drop deep before launching a counter, a dinked ball over the top trying to find Tosin, who is quickly sandwiched by two Egypt shirts.
4 min: Salah twists and turns when dropping into midfield, keeping hold of the ball to get Egypt moving.
Updated
3 min: Mohamed Hamdy, the Egypt left-back, commits a foul when pressing up the wing. The favourites begin to knock it around themselves … before Benin’s Tosin tries his luck from miles out. It’s a dreadful effort.
1 min: Benin wheel it around the back to begin with.
Peeeeep!
Egypt are decked out in red and white, while Benin, in yellow, kick things off. The sun’s out; let’s play.

Right, the anthems are underway at the Adrar Stadium. We’ll be up and running shortly.
It’s obviously been a very quiet news day in the world of football, riiiiiiighhhht?
Here’s Osasu Obayiuwana’s view:
For the Pharaohs, managed by the multiple Afcon winner Hossam Hassan and with players such as Omar Marmoush of Manchester City, Trézéguet and Mohamed Salah, this should be an easy day at the office. But it will be anything but that if Gernot Rohr, the manager of only the second Benin side to qualify for the knockout stages, has anything to do with it. ‘This is going to be a big game, a fantastic game for our country,’ Rohr told the Guardian. ‘Of course, we know the big players they have … We know that it will be difficult to beat them. But as outsiders, we will have our chance.’
It’s not been a tournament of shocks, as Jonathan Wilson explains here:
The teams
Egypt: Mohamed El Shenawy, Hany, Ibrahim, Rabia, Hamdy, Attia, Fathy, Adel, Salah, Marmoush, Trézéguet
Subs: Ahmed El Shenawy, Sobhi, Abdelmaguid, Ashour, Mohsen, Mohamed, Abou El Fetouh, Shehata, Fathi, Faisal, Eid, Zizo, Shobeir, Saber, Ismail
Benin: Dandjinou, Ouorou, Verdon, Tijani, Roche, Dokou, D’Almeida, Hassane, Aloko, Tosin, Olaïtan
Subs: Fassinou, Attidjikou, Ahlinvi, Kiki, Ahouangbo, Allagbé, Dossou, Kossi, Amoussou, Obassa, Rachidou, Tessilimi, Azongnitode, Ahoudo, Akimey

Preamble
Hello, hello, hello and welcome to the Afcon show. We’re into the last 16, with the seven-time champions facing a side that have reached the quarter-finals just once. Even then, when Benin got to the last eight in 2019, it was without winning a single game in normal time; a shootout win against Morocco was preceded by three draws in the group stage. Egypt are the giants here, chasing No 8.
Despite his country’s past glories and all his success at club level, Mo Salah is still chasing his first Afcon title. He scored two goals in the group stage, including the winner against Zimbabwe, as Egypt finished top. Benin finally secured their first Afcon victory in normal time with a 1-0 win agaist Botswana, and find themselves here via a third-place finish. Agadir is the scene for what looks a routine job for Salah and co … though the last 16 is where they fell two years ago, dumped out on penalties by DR Congo. Here’s to some proper knockout drama in Agadir. Kick-off’s at 4pm GMT.
