Macclesfield handed Premier League tie as reward for greatest upset
Macclesfield’s reward for the greatest FA Cup upset is a home draw with another Premier League side, Brentford, in the fourth round.
The National League North team, who famously knocked out the holders Crystal Palace 2-1 at Moss Rose on Saturday, will get the chance for another scalp when they welcome Keith Andrews’s in-form Bees in February.
The Macclesfield manager John Rooney, who is a former Everton youth player and brother of former Manchester United and England star Wayne, was hoping to face one of the real Premier League giants but admitted he was happy enough with another top-flight target.
“We said before that we would have liked to get Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal, but another Premier League side is incredible,” Rooney said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it [the media attention]. I haven’t set eyes on the lads since the game against Palace. I don’t know what they’ve been up to but let’s hope they didn’t party too hard.”
Non-league Macclesfield were the lowest-ranked team in the draw but it also offered up some fascinating ties. Seven Premier League clubs will be visiting lower-league opposition with Chelsea’s new head coach, Liam Rosenior, returning to his former club Hull City while Sunderland are heading to Oxford United.
West Ham, who desperately needed a result in the previous round against Queens Park Rangers will take the trip to League One Burton Albion while Wolves will not fancy an away-day at Blundell Park to face a Grimsby side who have already knocked out Manchester United in the Carabao Cup this season. Leeds United were handed a potentially difficult trip to St Andrew’s and Birmingham City. League Two’s Salford City will be dreaming of visiting Manchester City, if they can overcome Swindon Town in their rearranged third-round game.
With promotion to the Premier League the obvious priority for Wrexham and Ipswich, the two in-form Championship sides will come together at the “world’s oldest international football stadium” for what is sure to be an entertaining tie with some Hollywood glitz thrown in. Co-owner Ryan Reynolds watched on as his team beat Premier League Nottingham Forest on penalties in round three and could be joined by celebrity Ipswich fan Ed Sheeran for the STōK Cae Ras clash.
One of the most eye-catching all Premier League ties is Aston Villa’s home clash with Newcastle United. If Liverpool can overcome the challenge of League One Barnsley at Anfield, then they will welcome the conquerors of Manchester United – Brighton – in the next round. The Premier League leaders will welcome Wigan to the Emirates. The fourth-round ties will be played from 13-16 February.

Birmingham City v Leeds United – that’s a tasty one! That concludes the draw. Macclesfield v Brentford is a fine reward for the Palace tie while City v potentially Salford is interesting while Villa v Newcastle could well be the tie of the round. Wrexham v Ipswich is another really interesting one

Talking of Anfield, here’s the man of the moment waiting for the 6.35pm draw.
One of the subplots at Anfield tonight will be the former Liverpool academy players in the Barnsley side, Adam Phillips and Vimal Yoganathan. The pair came through the youth system, with Yoganathan spending seven years at the club and Phillips eight before they were released.
When the draw was made and Phillips knew he was heading back to Anfield, he told BBC Sport: “I ran upstairs screaming at my missus. I couldn’t believe it, I’m still a massive Liverpool fan. I’ll get goosebumps when You’ll Never Walk Alone is played. The dream was always to play for Liverpool but not many make it, so I’m happy to play there for Barnsley. It’ll be a special experience.”

The grand old Cup may have its detractors but one of the most attractive qualities it currently offers is a lack of VARness. Suddenly, you can actually celebrate a goal without fear of those lines or 10-minute delays while players work on their muscle injuries while standing around in the cold. VAR comes into play for every tie from the fifth round and will be available for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.
Also, semi-automated offside technology (SAOT as some people like to call it) will not be used until the fifth round and then only at Premier League grounds.

Evening all, and welcome to the draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup. After a weekend of sublime shocks and ridiculous results, all eyes are on Anfield for the 6.35pm draw before Liverpool take on League One strugglers Barnsley. Reds legend Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole will be pulling out the balls with obvious attention on those Silkmen, 40 miles down the road, after their astonishing 2-1 win over the holders Crystal Palace.
Apart from the heroes from Moss Rose, there are banana skins still lurking for the 14 remaining top-flight teams. League Two’s Salford and Swindon feature after their third-round tie was frozen off while Grimsby will be eyeing another giant-killing effort following their Carabao Cup glory at the expense of Manchester United back in August (that feels like years ago now but that was THIS SEASON).
