West Brom have sacked Ryan Mason as their head coach after a stoppage-time defeat at Leicester on Monday left the club 18th in the Championship. It was the team’s 10th away defeat in a row and ended the 34-year-old’s tenure after seven months.
Mason was appointed on a three-year deal after holding a variety of roles at Tottenham, including interim manager and assistant to Ange Postecoglou. West Brom said two members of Mason’s staff, Nigel Gibbs and Sam Pooley, had also left.
“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan, Nigel and Sam for their efforts and wishes all three the very best for the future,” West Brom said. “First-team coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis until a new staff is appointed.”
Mason began with three wins and a draw from his first four league matches but won only six of his next 22 games and four of his last five fixtures ended in defeat. He departs with the club seven points above the relegation zone and 10 points adrift of the playoffs.
West Brom play at Swansea in the FA Cup third round on Sunday before resuming their Championship campaign at home to second-placed Middlesbrough the following Friday. The club made Mason the permanent successor to Tony Mowbray, who was sacked in April 2025.
Since Tony Pulis left West Brom in 2017 only one of their nine managers, Carlos Corberán, has overseen more than 100 games.
