Jordan Pickford Had no chance with Kaoru Mitoma’s goal. Saved well from Ritsu Doan as Japan pressed. 6

Ben White Struggled to contain Keito Nakamura and was booed again. His return may well be shortlived. 4

Ezri Konsa Got the offside trap wrong but recovered to deny Ayase Ueda. Shaky distribution at times. 5

Marc Guéhi The best of a bad bunch in defence. Blocked a shot in the second half. 6

Nico O’Reilly Vulnerable to long diagonals? Doan’s chance had shades of Fede Valverde’s goal for Real Madrid. 5

Elliot Anderson Hit the bar and offered physicality but he was isolated against Daichi Kamada and Kaishu Sano. 6

Kobbie Mainoo Japan’s goal exposed poor defensive instincts. At fault for further openings. World Cup hopes over? 4

Morgan Rogers Tried to inject dynamism but drifted inside and it became too crowded. Underwhelming. 5

Cole Palmer Started well but faded after losing possession before Mitoma’s goal. A lot of ball losses. 4

Phil Foden Failed to prove he is a suitable stand-in when Harry Kane is missing. 4

Anthony Gordon Struggled with positioning in messy front four. Has not dislodged Marcus Rashford. 4

Substitutes Jarrod Bowen 6 (Palmer 59), Lewis Hall 6 (O’Reilly 59), Dominic Solanke 6 (Foden 59), Tino Livramento 5 (White 59), Marcus Rashford 6 (Gordan 71), James Garner 6 (Mainoo 71), Dan Burn 6 (Guéhi 83), Harry Maguire 6 (Konsa 83).
