Worcestershire’s new overseas signing has arrived under a cloud after leaving a one-day final in South Africa in order to catch his flight to England. Beyers Swanepoel was playing for Lions against Titans on Sunday when, according to a report by Times Live, he set off for the airport “around the 43rd over” of the second innings without informing his teammates as to why. It was widely assumed he had picked up an injury.

The all-rounder had bowled his full allocation of 10 overs, but because there was no injury, Lions were denied a substitute fielder for the final stages of the match. Titans went on to chase down the target with a ball to spare.

There are conflicting reports as to whether the Lions management knew of his intention to fly to the UK that evening. Either way, the 27-year-old’s earlier exit has angered the setup. Jono Leaf-Wright, the Lions chief executive, said: “I’m just extremely disappointed with Beyers. This is not the kind of conduct we, as the Lions, expect from our players. He has let down his teammates and the union.”

According to ESPNCricinfo, Swanepoel’s time at Worcestershire on a season-long deal could be in doubt. Overseas players require a No Objection Certificate from their home board, with Lions and Cricket South Africa ready to investigate the circumstances surrounding his surprise departure.

Russell Domingo, the Lions head coach, also missed the one-day final to start his new role at Hampshire, but did so with their permission.
