Italy were far from impressive in beating Romania 24-18 after trailing 12-8 at the interval in Marseille. Santiago Dellape's try put Italy ahead and a David Bortolussi penalty made it 8-0. But Alexandru Manta was adjudged to have touched down for Romania by the video referee despite appearing to drop the ball, then Marius Tincu drove through for a second try which Ionut Dimofte converted.

Italy, though, were awarded a penalty try after persistent fouling. Ramiro Pez converted and landed two more penalties to put them 21-12 up. Dimofte cut the deficit to six points with a penalty but ill discipline allowed Pez to restore the advantage before Dimofte had the final word with another successful kick.
