Befitting an end-of-season jamboree in rare north-east sunshine, Newcastle ran in seven tries as their back division turned in an exhibition performance.

Before the game young supporters were encouraged on to the pitch for a disco and to form a giant conga. A carnival atmosphere was everywhere, with a group of supporters dressed as clowns. Saracens, though, quickly took on the role of Aunt Sallies.

After a three-week absence for concussion England's Kyran Bracken was back and influential and he was joined in the 48th minute by Thomas Castaignède, who continues his long road to recovery, but having their first-choice half-back pairing together was one of the few pluses for the London side at the end.

Yet with five minutes gone the visitors were 10 points ahead as they took advantage of a strong wind and threatened to pull off an upset and secure the win that would guarantee their Premiership survival.

A Luke Smith penalty in the opening minute was followed by a try for the wing Ben Johnston, who profited from a powerful run by the centre Kevin Sorrell. There were certainly question marks against the home defence and it provided the jolt they needed, though the next score also went to Saracens through another Smith penalty.

With the wind playing a major role it took half an hour before Newcastle got on the scoreboard, but it was the cue for a display which the Falcons' director of rugby Rob Andrew claimed was probably their best overall performance of the season.

"The season is coming to a hell of a climax," said Andrew. "For everyone involved in either avoiding relegation or getting the best possible place in the play-offs, there is a huge week ahead for all of us. We are now finding our form at the right time."

The only problem that Newcastle face concerns an injury to their prop Micky Ward, who has dislocated a shoulder. A second prop, Ian Peel, having injured a hamstring in training last week, Andrew may have to sign a prop on loan or fly back the England Under-21 player Jimmy Isaacson, who is playing in Australia to gain experience.

Newcastle's opening try followed a high tackle on Jamie Noon. They kicked for touch and established a platform for a series of rucks before a driving maul forced the No8 Jon Dunbar over the line.

As the first half drew to a close, Hall Charlton took a penalty and dived over for an opportunist score which gave the home side the lead for the first time.

In the second half and with the advantage of the wind the floodgates opened with five tries for the home side. A break by Inga Tuigamala, who had moved to centre after an injury to Tom May, carved out an opportunity for the prop Marius Hurter to score.

Andrew claimed afterwards that the referee should have used the yellow card earlier but it did appear in the 53rd minute when Saracens' Kris Chesney was sent to the sin-bin for a professional foul.

Two Falcons tries in his absence gave the home side a 20-point lead and ended the match as a contest. First Tuigamala made a crossfield run and drew the cover before releasing the wing Michael Stephenson, then the lock Hugh Vyvyan rounded off good attacking play.

Saracens have the All Black legend Wayne Shelford taking over as head coach this week and he admitted afterwards that there were a lot of areas to work on at the club. Too many missed tackles and too many turnovers were cited by Shelford for the London side's defeat. They also looked a pretty demoralised group by the end.

Second tries for Stephenson and Charlton late in the game underlined Shelford's concerns. Chesney scored a late Saracens try but it was of little consolation as they contemplate the final games that will decide their Premiership fate. On this showing they may need to rely on results elsewhere.
