A man has been arrested over an allegation that a racist gesture was made to a footballer during a Chelsea match against Manchester United.

Police arrested the 28-year-old after footage appeared to show him aiming a monkey taunt at the Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck during a Capital One cup tie at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge stadium in west London last week.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed: A man has been "arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated offence". The man was later released on bail until 29 November.

The incident follows a separate allegation last month in which Chelsea accused a match official of using "inappropriate language" towards a Nigerian player.
