Jonny Wilkinson will decide this month whether to stay at Newcastle or leave for France, according to Toulon, the club keen to sign him.
Philippe Saint-André, who is leaving Sale to become Toulon's sporting director for next season, said he would know within three weeks whether Wilkinson will accept an offer to move to the south of France.
"I am trying to sign one or two good, high-profile players and Jonny Wilkinson is one of those," Saint-André told the Daily Express. "In the next two or three weeks we will know if he is coming."
Wilkinson, who has not played for about six months because of a knee injury, is weighing up his options and Newcastle have admitted they do not know whether the fly-half will be with them next season.
Any move to Toulon would almost certainly hinge on the club staying in France's top division and the team took their latest step towards safety by beating Castres last weekend.
