The South Africa coach Peter de Villiers believes the centre Frans Steyn will play no further part in the World Cup due to injury. Steyn suffered a shoulder injury during the 13-5 Pool D victory over Samoa in Auckland that confirmed South Africa's quarter-final place.

Afterwards De Villiers revealed that 24-year-old Steyn is likely to go home due to the seriousness of his injury.

"His shoulder isn't that good," De Villiers said. "The doctor will confirm it, but it's 95% that he is on his way home and that is a big blow for us."

De Villiers, who at one stage of the World Cup campaign had three locks injured in Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha and Johan Muller, added: "I don't know what's wrong with us. When we get an injury in one position, we get it in one position.

"When Lady Luck turns her back on us, she turns it properly on us."
