Wayne Rooney has urged his Manchester United team-mates to replace Liverpool at the top of the Premier League by winning their next two fixtures.
Sunday's 3–0 victory over Chelsea has moved United to five points off the summit with two games in hand. They will play those — away to Wigan Athletic on Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers on Saturday — before Liverpool play their next league fixture, Monday's encounter with Everton at Anfield.
"It's down to us," Rooney told MUTV. "If we win our two games we'll be top of the league. That might only last until Liverpool play Everton but on Saturday night we want to look at the table and see ourselves at the top.
"The win against Chelsea was very important. After watching Liverpool [draw 0–0 at Stoke on Saturday], we needed to take advantage and get the win. We've done that now so come Saturday, if we do our job right and win our two games, then we'll be top."
