The Rugby Football Union will decide at the beginning of next week whether to charge Edward Griffiths, Saracens' chief executive, for disparaging remarks he made about the union's chief disciplinary officer, Jeff Blackett, after the club's director of rugby, Brendan Venter, was banned from entering Twickenham for next week's Premiership final against Leicester.
Venter was given a 14-week match day ban after being found guilty of misconduct. Blackett, in his judgment, was critical of Venter, who was charged for remarks and gestures he made to Leicester supporters at Welford Road in this month's league match, and of Saracens for comments made by the club during the disciplinary process.
Griffiths said Blackett's judgment bordered on self-parody, adding: "Perhaps it is time for English rugby to be run like a modern professional sport and not a rural prep school. This kind of attack on a leading club does the RFU no favours at all."
The RFU's president, John Owen, will decide whether Griffiths should be charged with bringing the game into disrepute. Venter's appeal will be heard next week on a day still to be decided.
