Phil Jones is to have a full scan on his hamstring injury on Wednesday as fears grow at Manchester United that the defender could be ruled out for Sunday’s visit of Queens Park Rangers.

After returning to the club on Tuesday following England’s 2-0 win over Switzerland in Basel, Jones had an initial examination by United’s medical staff and the issue was deemed serious enough for the 22-year-old to be sent for the scan.

Jones had to be replaced by Phil Jagielka on 77 minutes of Monday evening’s Euro 2016 qualifier victory with him shaking his head in disappointment. The central defender had played on for a while after suffering the problem.

On Sunday, Louis van Gaal could hand debuts to four of his summer recruits – Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo – if all are deemed fit as the manager continues to search for the first competitive win of his tenure.

United have so far managed only two points from the opening nine in the league, and also suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss at MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.
