He may not be a World Cup winner, but New York Red Bulls have signed Bradley Wright-Phillips as a designated player following the departure of Thierry Henry.

On Monday, Henry announced he would leave the Red Bulls following their playoff elimination at the hands of New England Revolution. In his place, New York have opted for a player who has been prolific for the team in MLS.

“Following his outstanding performances in 2014, which produced 31 goals in all competitions, the club has decided to make Bradley Wright-Phillips a MLS designated player,” said the New York Red Bulls sporting director, Andy Roxburgh.  “Bradley is not only a prolific goal scorer, he is an excellent professional and a great team player who will be a big asset to the club in the coming seasons.”

Wright-Phillips joined the Red Bulls during the 2013 season but it was in 2014 that he made a lasting impact, equalling a league record with 27 goals. Tim Cahill is the Red Bulls’ other designated player.

Wright-Phillips is the son of former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright, while his brother Shaun also represented his country at international level.
