Wayne Rooney says he will have no problem taking responsibility should Manchester United be awarded a penalty against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
He fired high over the crossbar from 12 yards against Arsenal last Monday but is adamant that he would not let that put him off should the opportunity arise at Stamford Bridge.
"Of course I'll take a penalty at Chelsea if I get the chance," he said. "I know players miss penalties and I'm just hoping the next one I will score."
Rooney has scored one goal – a penalty at Ibrox against Rangers in the Champions League – since his return to the United side last month after an ankle injury and he has yet to find the net from open play this season.
While Rooney admits he is eager to get on the scoresheet, he says his game is about more than just goals and he has been working hard with Dimitar Berbatov to improve their build-up play.
"Obviously as a centre-forward you want to score goals," he told the Daily Telegraph. "Some centre-forwards are different, some like to be on the pitch and their whole job is to score, they don't look to get involved in the game. I like to get involved in the game and feel part of it but you still want to score.
"Dimitar Berbatov and I have been working on the training ground to work closer, play more one-twos and play a bit quicker. It worked really well in the Blackburn game, when we won 7-1, but we only had one up front against Arsenal, so you have to alter the way you play sometimes."
Manchester United remain unbeaten in the league and go into Sunday's crucial game three points ahead of Carlo Ancelotti's side with a game in hand.
Despite Chelsea's poor recent form, which has seen them fall from the top of the table to fourth position, Rooney feels that the team who finish above them will win the league.
"It hurt last year not winning the league, so the main goal is to try to win it back," he said. "If we are above Chelsea at end of season, I think we'll win it. Over the last few weeks Chelsea have hit a bit of a sticky patch but we know they are a great team and we know they will be winning games again soon. So we need to make sure we win and get that edge over them.
"Even four or five weeks ago we said, if we could get to within three points of them going into this game, we would be happy. But we're now going into it three points above them with a game in hand. The win over Arsenal [on Monday] sent out a massive message to our rivals but, if we can win at Chelsea, we will be in an even better position."
