Víctor Valdés made his debut for Manchester United on Monday but was unable to keep a clean sheet as the Under-21s defeated their Liverpool counterparts.

United won 2-1 at Leigh Sports Village thanks to goals from Nick Powell and Paddy McNair but the game was notable mainly for the first appearance in a United shirt by Valdés, the former Barcelona goalkeeper who signed on a free transfer in January.

Valdés was beaten at his near post by a fierce Jerome Sinclair shot shortly before half-time, according to United’s website, but McNair won the match for United in the 47th minute.

Valdés wrote on Twitter: “Was a great honor to win today with the unders 21 in my first game against Liverpoool. Well Done Guys!”
