Full-time: Man United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeeeeeeep! Jon Moss brings the contest to a close with three long blasts on his whistle and Manchester shoot three points clear of the chasing pack at the top of the Premier League table. It was a reasonably entertaining match, which Tottenham dominated in the opening 20 and closing 10 minutes, but were second best in the middle hour. A Kyle Walker own goal after 22 minutes settled the game, but Spurs had several decent chances to take one or all three points. Here’s Daniel Taylor’s match report.

Updated

90+3 min: Manchester United lift the siege on their own goal, with Wayne Rooney galloping down the field and heading for the corner, where he wins a throw-in. Ashley Young throws it short to his skipper, who stands over it in the corner as he attempts to run down the clock.

90+3 min: Juan Mata was booked shortly before Alli, for a foul on Ryan Mason. Moments previously, he’d been flat on his back getting his legs stretched while suffering from cramp.

90 min: Dele Alli gets booked, taking for one the team as he brings down Ashley Young as the winger attempted to break down the field on a counter-attack. There are two minutes of four allocated for added time left.

89 min: Eriksen shoots low and hard from the edge of the United penalty area and romero gets down to parry. He sends the ball straight back into the mixer, where it’s hacked clear by a defender. Edgy times for United, here.

87 min: Tottenham continue in their quest to find an equaliser that would not be entirely undeserved. They win a free-kick wide on the left and Eriksen sends the ball towards the edge of the six-yard box, where the ball ricochets off Herrera’s shoulder and bounces goalwards, only for Sergio Romero to get down and punch the ball clear.

85 min: Toby Alderweireld picks out Christian Eriksen at the far post with a wonderful cross from the right flank. The Dane catches the ball on the volley from a tight angle, but Romero saves.

84 min: Great tackle from Chris Smalling, who does well to dispossess Nacer Chadli in the Manchester United penalty area after the winger had been played into space down the inside left and looked ready to fire off a shot.

83 min: Luke Shaw is penalised for a foul on Kyle Walker.

81 min: We’re into the final 10 minutes with United looking fairly comfortable as they protect their slender lead.

80 min: Manchester United substitution: Matteo Darmian off after an impressive performance. Antonio Valencia replaces him.

78 min: Chris Smalling is forced to hack the ball clear for a Spurs corner, after Ben Davies had got in behind the United defence. Smalling was expecting his goalkeeper to help him out there, but no assistance was forthcoming. The corner’s swung in towards the near post, where Bastian Schweinsteiger clears.

77 min: Rooney sends the free-kick high over the crossbar. Spurs substitution: Eric Dier off, the 19-year-old Dele Alli on for his Premier League debut.

76 min: Ander Herrera plays the ball wide to Ashley Young on the left flank. He plays it to Rooney and sprints inside, before going to ground under a challenge of sorts from Eric Dier. Free-kick for United, about four yards outside the Spurs penalty area. Yellow card for Dier.

73 min: Wayne Rooney attempts to score with a spectacular scissors kick, gewtting on the end of a Darmian cross from the right. He manages to make contact with the ball, but fails to fire off a clean shot. Or indeed, any kind of shot.

71 min: Chris Smalling does well to tackle and dispossess Harry Kane as the Spurs striker was bearing down on goal.

70 min: Tottenham substitution: Erik Lamela on, Mousa Dembele off. It’s worth noting that with both Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado likely to be booted towards the exit door, Spurs have no strikers on their bench.

69 min: Bastian Schweinsteiger picks up what could be the first of many Premier League bookings for a tasty foul on Nacer Chadli.

68 min: Manchester United substitution: Memphis makes way for Ander Herrera after a decent debut. He started quietly, but got involved after playing a part in the creation of United’s goal. Herrera slots in to the space vacated just behind Wayne Rooney.

Updated

67 min: Sergio Romero is quick off his line to cut out a cross from Mousa Dembele, which was heading to an unmarked Nacer Chadli.

Updated

64 min: Bastian Schweinsteiger plays the ball wide to Rooney and continues his run into the Tottenham penalty area, where he leaps in an attempt to convert the return cross. He’s beaten in the air and the ball breaks for Ashley Young, who shoots low and hard through a thicket of legs, only for his shot to be saved by Michel Vorm, who needed to attempts to smother a shot he can’t have seen coming until very, very late.

Updated

63 min: No chances of note to report after a lengthy stretch of scrappy play punctuated by niggly fouls, substitutions and little in the way of quality. Manchester United won’t mind that - they continue to lead 1-0 courtesy of Kyle Walker’s first half own goal.

60 min: Wayne Rooney goes to ground holding his head under a challenge from Jan Vertonghen. There’s a break in play, which allows Manchester United to replace Michael Carrick with Bastian Schweinsteiger, who gets a rapturous reception from the locals*.

*Insert your own Home Counties joke.

59 min: Toby Alderweireld is penalised for a foul on Juan Mata and gets a ticking-off from Jon Moss. It’s all a bit scrappy at the moment.

57 min: Daley Blind concedes a free-kick - indirect, I think - about 30 yards from the United goal, well right of centre. Eriksen sends the ball curling into the penalty area, where Romero gets down low to gather.

55 min: Ashley Young and Kyle Walker continue their lively battle, with the Manchester United winger conceding a free-kick after a touchline tussle. Mauricio Pochettino adds his two cents and gets a lecture from referee Jon Moss. The Spurs manager apologises for his comments and play resumes with a Spurs free-kick just in front of the technical area.

Updated

54 min: Spurs substitution: Nabil Bentaleb off, after a poor performance. Ben Davies, who made quite a name for himself in the Spurs midfield last season, replaces him.

53 min: Ben Davies picks out Christian Eriksen on the left flank and the midfielder runs into space, where nobody can hear you scream. Spurs eventually fashion a shot, which is blocked by Matteo Darmian.

51 min: There’s loud applause as Bastian Schweinsteiger warms up on the touchline in his hi-viz vest.

49 min: Memphis shoots straight at Michel Vorm from distance, after some more neat interplay from Manchester United around the edge of the Spurs box. Again, they took the ball wide for working it back into the centre through a series of neat one-twos.

48 min: Toby Alderweireld sends a hopeful a six-iron forward in the general direction of Harry Kane, but Chris Smalling rises to head clear.

47 min: Not for the first, the second or indeed the third time, Nabil Bentaleb gifts possession to Manchester United just outside his own penalty area. He’s been very sloppy in the defensive midfield role today and Eric Dier, the man beside him, hasn’t been a great deal better.

Second half: Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester United get the ball rolling for the second half, playing into the Stretford End. They immediately concede a throw-in deep inside their own half, when Ashley Young is forced to put the ball out while tracking back to shadow Kyle Walker.

Half-time at Old Trafford: Man Utd 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Having been under the cosh for the opening 20 minutes, Manchester United’s players go in for their half-time cuppa a goal to the good courtesy of an own goal from Kyle Walker, who rolled the ball into his own net while trying to put it out for a corner as Wayne Rooney shaped to shoot from about 10 yards. The goal settled fairly obvious United jitters and they’ve been dominant since scoring.

Updated

45+1 min: Spurs go on a rare sortie into Manchester United territory and win a free-kick when Scheniderlin tugs Dembele’s shirt. Free-kick for Spurs, wide on the right, a good way out. Eriksen sends it into the area, where Alderweireld forces a save out of Romero with a weak shot.

Updated

44 min: Jan Vertonghen clears a Memphis cross from the right flank, but only as far as Schneiderlin. Memphis and Schneiderlin combine to try to get the ball back into the Spurs penalty area, but it’s left to Christian Eriksen, reduced to scrabbling around on the edge of his own team’s box in an attempt to get the ball, to clear the Spurs lines.

40 min: Perhaps it’s the sun-shine and the early afternoon time-slot, but despite their team’s lead, the atmosphere at Old Trafford seems rather flat, despite the best attempts of a few pockets of fans to get the place rocking a bit. Much of the pace has been sucked out of the game too, with Spurs attempting to slow things down a bit so they can re-establish a decent foothold.

Updated

38 min: Manchester United get the ball wide and then cross it back into the centre, where Morgan Schneiderlin attempts to dink the ball over the Spurs centre-halves and into the corridor of uncertainty for Rooney to shoot. The midfielder’s pass is a mite too weighty and Vorm gathers to ease the pressure on Spurs.

Updated

35 min: Having got over the shock of their setback of a few minutes ago, Spurs start to feel their way back into the game. No sooner do I type that sentence than they give the ball away again, allowing Juan Mata to unleash a straggly old shot on goal from distance. His effort isn’t clean and bobbles wide of Vorm’s left-hand post. Eric Dier was the Spurs offender there, playing a loose pass to Bentaleb, who failed to clear when the opportunity presented itself and let Mata in.

34 min: A bit of a lull ... move along, nothing to see here.

Updated

31 min: Bentaleb gets caught on the ball by Luke Shaw as Manchester United continue to keep Spurs on the back foot. Carrick picks out Ashley Young on the left touchline with a raking cross-field pass, but Kyle Walker is all over the United winger like a rash and doesn’t give him time to settle on the ball.

29 min: Wayne Rooney attempts to cross for Memphis from the right flank and Toby Alderweireld is forced to head the ball out for a corner. The ball’s swung in towards the near post, where Michael Carrick is waiting, but Spurs clear.

27 min: Juan Mata and Memphis stand over the ball at the resulting free-kick. Mata takes the shot, but his up-and-down effort hits the wall and the ball is eventually cleared by Kyle Walker. That goal seems to have settled since scoring and are turning the screw on a Spurs team that had been dominant prior to conceding that own goal.

26 min: Jan Vertonghen gets booked for a foul on Juan Mata on the edge of the Spurs penalty area, just to the right of the D.

23 min: Walker was unlucky there. A sloppy pass from Nabil Bentaleb gifted possession to Manchester United in midfield. Memphis raced down the inside right channelk before picking out Young, who squared the ball for a completely unmarked Wayne Rooney in the centre.

With only Vorm to beat, Rooney ought to have swept the ball home first time, but opted to take a touch, unaware that Walker was racing in and ready to pounce. Pounce the full-back did, only to steer the ball just the wrong side of the left upright and send it rolling into the back of the net.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Spurs (Walker 22og)

Kyle Walker spears the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of his own goal as he attempts to put it out for a corner, with Wayne Rooney dithering over a wonderful goalscoring opportunity.

Updated

19 min: Ashley Young switches play from left to right, picking out Darmian. He plays the ball forward to Juan Mata. With play back on the left flank, Kyle Walker gets tight on Ashley Young, smothering him off the ball as the United winger came into possession.

19 min: Nacer Chadli tries to play the ball over the United defence for Harry Kane to chase, but his pass is cut out by Smalling.

17 min: Sergio Romero comes under pressure and larrups the ball across the face of his own goal for a throw-in. Moments later, Darmian concedes a throw-in as Christian Eriksen threatens. The Dane is looking lively, while his Manchester United counterpart Memphis has barely had a touch.

15 min: It’s been a fairly cagey opening 15 minutes, in which Tottenham have generally had the better of things and created the only decent chance. Mauricio Pochettino will be the happier of the two managers,m but there’s not a great deal in it.

Updated

14 min: Mousa Dembele draws a tackle from Schneiderlin to win a throw-in deep in United territory on the right touchline. Nothing comes of it - as you were.

12 min: Spurs win their first corner. Christian Eriksen’s outswinger eventually finds Kane, whose weak header fails to trouble a United defence that’s looking a little shaky and vulnerable early doors.

Updated

11 min: Scheiderlin picks out Juan Mata with a pass to the right touchline and the Spaniard immediately cuts inside, looking for an opening. Jan Vertonghen robs him of possession.

9 min: Spurs attack on the break, with Harry Kane gambolling down the right flank. Luke Shaw puts a stop to his gallop and relieves him of possession, but Kane is tenacious and steals the ball back, before being shepherded out of play under pressure from Daley Blind. Goal kick for Spurs.

8 min: Spurs centre-half Toby Alderweireld clears an Ashley Young cross with a meaty header towards the touchline.

7 min: It won’t have gone unnoticed by the occupants of the Stretford End that their new goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, was a little slow to come off his line when Kane picked out Christian Eriksen. Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch, Michel Vorm is quick off his line to gather a Luke Shaw cross from the left.

5 min: Christian Eriksen misses the first goalscoring opportunity of note, floating the ball over onrushing goalkeeper and cross-bar after taking controlling a scooped pass through the centre from Harry Kane with an exquisite cushioned header. It was a difficult chance, but one you’d expect a man of his talents to finish. Good work from Kane too, who picked him out with a delightful pass over the United defence.

Updated

3 min: Spurs are dominating possession in the opening minutes, under a heavy press for Manchester United. Memphis is tucked in behind lone front man Wayne Rooney for the hosts, with Ashley Young on the left of the front three and Juan Mata on the right. Spurs are sitting very deep, thus far.

1 min: Spurs play it around at the back, prodding and probing as they try to make their way forward. Eric Dier is playing in the centre of midfield for them, having played in defence last season. Ben Davies plays at left-back, in for the injured Danny Rose. They’ve got Nacer Chadli on the left wing, Mosa Dembele on the right and Christian Eriksen in behind Harry Kane in the centre.

Premier League 2015-16 is go-go-go!

Harry Kane gets the Premier League season under way, rolling the ball towards Christian Eriksen as Tottenham kick off, playing into the Stretford End.

Not long now ...

The teams are in the tunnel, with Wayne Rooney wearing the captain’s armband for Manchester United and Jan Vertonghen leading out Spurs. Memphis Depay wears “Memphis” across his shoulders, so I suppose we’ll go with that. He’s one of many new Premier League additions I’m looking forward to seeing play this season.

Mauricio Pochettino speaks ...

Having been back in the UK for less than 48 hours after playing two pre-season friendlies in Munich this week, the Spurs manager is asked if his team has had enough time to focus. “We are ready for today, we are focussing on today,” he says. “The pre-season was very good and I think we are ready to compete today.”

Asked about the decision to play Michel Vorm in goal in place of Hugo Lloris, who is recovering from an injured wrist, he says. “Yes it is common sense. Hugo is not fit enough to play 90 minutes.”

On the omission of Danny Rose: “Danny is out. In the last training session yesterday he was injured and was not able to stay with the group. It’s a special game and I think it’s good to start the season against one of the bigger teams.”

A quick observation: Mr Pochettino’s command of the English language seems to have improved a lot since the last press conference of his that I attended, although rumours abound that it’s always been a lot better than he let on.

Louis van Gaal speaks ...

On the subject of the inclusion of debutants Depay, Schneiderlin and Darmian, he says: “They were from the beginning there, more or less, so they can start. I’m very happy with them.”

Asked about the decision to leave out David De Gea, he explains: “We have tried everything to focus David De Gea on the match, but we have seen in the preparation period that it was very difficult for him, so we have decided - David and the staff - for him not to play. For the goalkeeper it is all about focu and concentration and it is a position that needs that. In spite of that David De Gea wants to play, but we think that it is better for him and for us that Romero should play.

“For me it is not normal that he should play [having just signed], but in these circumstances it was the best decision. It was a very difficult decision, because Sam Johnstone has played very well in the preparations.”

Manchester United's players to wear black armbands today ...

An email from Cian O'Mahony

“Distinguished Dutch writer Henk Spaan, writing in today’s Amsterdam Parool, is hoping that Dele Alli will get some playing time at Old Trafford,” he says.
“Introducing a young player of his world-class should not be a problem as long as he is surrounded by sufficient experience,” writes Henk. Recalling last August’s 4-0 drubbing of Man Utd by MK Dons, in which Alli took part, he adds: “Louis van Gaal would have gone and bought Alli if his attention hadn’t been so taken up by the appalling performance of his own team.”

"Lads, it's Tottenham ..."

This fixtures conjures up memories of one of the most famous pre-match team-talks in football history, as described in one of Roy Keane’s books. Over to you, Roy ...

I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk. It was Tottenham at home. I thought, please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what TOttenham is about, they are nice and tidy, but we’ll fucking do them. He cam in and said: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham’, and that was it. Brilliant.

Harry Kane speaks ...

Tottenham’s boy wonder (OK, he’s 22) has been chatting ahead of his team’s opening match of the season. The Guardian’s Dave Hytner was all ears.

Premier League preview: Tottenham Hotspur

The Guardian writers have predicted Tottenham will finish sixth. Personally, I predicted fifth.

Premier League preview: Manchester United

The Guardian writers (football writers, I hasten to add ... Polly Toynbee and George Monbiot weren’t canvassed, although their input could only increase our chances of getting more predictions correct) have predicted that Manchester United will finish second this season. I reckon they’ll finish top of the table.

Welcome back, everybody ...

England are about to win the Ashes, farmers everywhere have saved their hay and the football is back. You could almost say that all is well in the world again. The soap opera that is the Premier League returns to air today, for another 380 90-minute episodes worth of meandering and often eventful melodrama boasting no end of narrative threads involving conflict, romance, despair, violence and no shortage of comic relief.

But enough about José, who can’t possibly be expected to hog all the headlines; episode one kicks off at Old Trafford, where Manchester United entertain Tottenham Hotspur in today’s lunchtime kick-off. United will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s opening day defeat at the hands of Swansea City, while Spurs fans will expect their team to avenge the 3-0 hiding (it could have been a lot worse) they shipped on their most recent visit to this venue in March.

Kick-off is at 12.45pm (BST) and we’ll have all the team news and build-up from an hour or so before that. Please join us.

If this doesn’t get you in the mood for the new season, we’re not sure what will. A Rocky montage, maybe. Or a bacon buttie and a nice mug of tea.
