Wayne Rooney is out of the Champions League match at PSV Eindhoven with the injury he sustained in training before Saturday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool.

Manchester United are resisting rushing their captain back into action for the group stage opener in the Netherlands on Tuesday after he suffered what is believed to be a hamstring injury, although the manager, Louis van Gaal, is hoping to have him available for Sunday’s Premier League visit to Southampton.

James Wilson and Andreas Pereira, who was signed from PSV, have both been added to the 18-man squad that was on duty against Liverpool at Old Trafford. Pereira suffered an injury while away with Brazil’s Under-23 side but is fit for selection again.
