The break has been for only two months but one of the most eagerly anticipated comebacks in the history of golf has been assured, with confirmation that Tiger Woods will play in next week’s Masters.
On Friday the 39-year-old issued a statement about his Augusta National participation. Sponsors, television companies and Rory McIlroy - who would otherwise have been virtually the sole focus of tournament attention as he seeks a grand slam of majors - will be among those delighted by this news.
“It’s obviously very important to me and I want to be there,” Woods said.
“I’ve worked a lot on my game and I’m looking forward to competing. I’m excited to get to Augusta and I appreciate everyone’s support.” Intriguingly, Woods made two visits to Augusta in recent days. He played 18 holes there on Tuesday, before returning for what was described as an intense range session on Friday. Woods is currently ranked 104th in the world.
