That’s all from me. Thanks for reading and for your emails. A good night for Arsenal, and just wait until you see those goals. The Madueke opener in particular was special.
Cheers! Until next time!

David Hytner’s match report from the Bernabéu:
That is now only two wins from eight games for Xabi Alonso, whose job at Real Madrid is in serious jeopardy. And it’s not just because of the results, he doesn’t seem able to navigate the politics and personalities at Madrid in the same way that Zidane and Ancelotti did.

Champions League table
Here is what those results do the league phase standings. Arsenal are out in front, the only side to have won all six of their matches.
Obviously a huge win for Manchester City, who leap up to fourth. But it’s tight at the top, just two points separate PSG in third and Liverpool in ninth (which is outside the automatic qualification spots). Newcastle and Dortmund will hope to nudge back into the top eight in their final two matches.

Full-time: Benfica 2-0 Napoli
Benfica are eight points adrift of Porto in the Portuguese league but this is an important win in Europe for José Mourinho’s side.
Full-time: Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Bodo/Glimt
The story of Dortmund’s season, that. Twice they earned a lead, twice they were pegged back.
Full-time: Club Brugge 0-3 Arsenal
The scoreline flatters Arsenal a bit, but the Gunners scored two outrageous goals through Martinelli and Madueke. Should also mention that 16-year-old Marli Salmon came off the bench for the Gunners.
3 - Only three players have played for an English club in the UEFA Champions League while aged 16 or younger. All three have done so for Arsenal - Jack Wilshere, Max Dowman, and Marli Salmon. DNA. pic.twitter.com/RaTSlfOZfF

Full-time: Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Newcastle
A draw that will feel like a loss for Eddie Howe, given Leverkusen’s late equaliser. But that is a good point in Germany.
Full-time: Athletic Bilbao 0-0 PSG
A toothless game. Only two major chances for PSG and on both occasions Unai Simón was there to make a great save.
Full-time: Juventus 2-0 Pafos
An important three points for Juventus, who looked very shaky in the first half.
Benfica 2-0 Napoli
90 min: Mourinho looks like he has won the battle of two former Spurs managers, with Antonio Conte and Napoli beaten.
“Greetings from Naples where the mood is sombre,” emails Colum Fordham. “After the victory against Juventus, Napoli may have underestimated Mourinho’s Benfica, who have exposed the Napoli defence on numerous occasions. Neres has played well on the right wing but it’s not enough. Not even Scott McTominay, Napoli’s Scottish star, seems able to make the difference. The wily Portugese coach has outwitted Conte this evening.”
GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Newcastle (Grimaldo 88)
That was coming! Wave after wave of Leverkusen pressure and Newcastle finally crack. Grimaldo sells a nice dummy, the ball finds Maza, who slips a through ball back to Grimaldo … and the Spaniard slides a finish under Ramsdale. All the momenutum is now with the German side. Will Newcastle hang on for the draw?
Updated
Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Newcastle
83 min: Leverkusen are now pushing for a late equaliser, with Tella forcing Ramsdale into a save and Newcastle surviving a goalmouth scramble. Squeaky bum time.
Newcastle hit the post! Again!
Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Newcastle
80 min: Jacob Murphy wraps his foot around the ball and bends one past Flekken but only onto the bottom of the far post and away.
GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Bodo/Glimt (Hauge 75)
Bodo/Glimt are level again! This is a mess of a goal from Dortmund’s perspective, as (I think) Andreas Helmersen drives into their box. A shot is blocked but the ball falls kindly to Hauge, and Bodo/Glimt’s talisman tucks a finish past Kobel from near the penalty spot!
GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Newcastle (Miley 74)
Newcastle have come from behind to lead! Gordon again at the heart of things, standing up Arthur and crossing from the byline. Miley, just on as a substitute, gambles and rises to meet the cross, glancing his header into the corner! The away end goes absolutely bonkers as the home-grown hero Miley wheels away in celebration. Miley is a real handful and still just 19. I swear he has grown a couple of inches since his last goal at Everton last month.

GOAL! Juventus 2-0 Pafos (David 72)
Juve immediately double their lead! Conceição again turning nicely to set up a counter attack. Yildiz sprints down the left wing and puts it on a plate for David, who sidefoots home. David Luiz, in Pafos’ defence, just didn’t have the legs to get back.
GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Pafos (McKennie 67)
Substitute Conceição somehow finds some space in the box and feeds McKennie, who gets a yard and arrows a shot into the top corner, beating the Pafos keeper at the near post! Juventus have been woeful but have picked things up since the break with the introduction of the subs. Openda and Thuram also on.
Newcastle hit the post!
Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Newcastle
63 min: Gordon is so dangerous when he’s being direct and the Englishman drives around compatriot Quansah before shooting low and hard across goal with his left foot. The ball hits the inside of the post and, luckily for Leverkusen, safely away. Newcastle have gone from 1-0 down and looking dreadful to nearly ahead in just 15 minutes.
Athletic Bilbao 0-0 PSG
60 min: If you’re wondering what is going on in the Basque Country, not a lot. Athletic Bilbao have only scored four goals in their entire European campaign, and PSG look equally toothless here. “PSG are without Dembélé and Hakimi, and it really shows”, emails Kári Tulinius. “Not that they don’t have other great players, but anyone would miss that pair, and the Parisians aren’t as unpredictable in attack without them, giving the Athletic defence an easier task than you’d expect. I think Mayulu’s shot was their first on target.”
PSG have just brought on Doué from the bench. I think the Frenchman was being rested, but is now needed by Luis Enrique.
GOAL! Club Brugge 0-3 Arsenal (Martinelli 56)
Another wondergoal from the Gunners! This is all Martinelli, who beats his man on the left wing, cuts inside and curls a stupendous shot right into the top corner. An expert finish, particularly as the Brazilian was running away from goal but contorted his foot to whip the ball into the top bin. Wow. Game over, surely.

GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Bodo/Glimt (Brandt 52)
Couto crosses to Beier at the near post, the German glancing a header at goal. It is saved by Haikin, but Brandt is there to mop up the rebound and tap in his second of the night!
GOAL! Benfica 2-0 Napoli (Leandro Barreiro 50)
Richard Ríos drives to the byline and crosses low to Leandro Barreiro, who backheels the ball past Milinkovic-Savic! Napoli are really struggling in the Champions League this season and now they have a mountain to climb in Portugal!
GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Newcastle (Gordon 51 pen)
Newcastle back on terms! Woltemade earned the penalty, poaching the ball off Leverkusen keeper Flekken, formerly of Brentford, before going to ground. Gordon converts the spot kick, sending Flekken the wrong way. Out of nowhere, Newcastle are level!
Updated
GOAL! Club Brugge 0-2 Arsenal (Madueke 48)
Arsenal catch Club Brugge cold at the start of the second half! The Belgian finished the first half the stronger but are helpless here as Zubimendi sends over a hopeful cross to the back post. Initially it looks like Club Brugge keeper Van den Heuvel is going to claim it but he lets it go and Madueke has an easy header at the back post into the empty net! His second of the night!
Updated
Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Newcastle
47 min: Bayer Leverkusen have been forced into a half-time change, with striker Patrick Schick coming off. I assume that’s an injury, rather than a tactical shift. Christian Kofane on.
“Newcastle lucky to go into the break only a goal down and with 11 men still on the pitch,” emails Chris Paraskevas. “Eddie Howe will surely give ‘new signing’ Wissa a run, given the huge gaps that Leverkusen are leaving in behind when they push up. Woltemade has largely played with his back to goal and fed off scraps. We need more pace in transition. We also need our midfield to wake up, because a sluggish start like this on Sunday sends a shiver down my spine.”
Peeeeeeeeep!
We’re off for the second halves.

Half-time scores!
Club Brugge 0-1 Arsenal
45 min: Club Brugge have a chance to equalise! Stankovic breaks the offside trap, running from deep, but the Serbian takes an age to get the bouncing ball under control. Stankovic does force Raya into a good save, but was forced to take the shot early as he dallied on the ball and the Arsenal defenders retreated.
Athletic Bilbao 0-0 PSG
44 min: Great save from Unai Simon to deny Mayulu! Zaire-Emery rolls a low cross across the box, Mayulu loses his marker but can’t convert, as Bilbao’s keeper springs to his right to make a sensational stop!
GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Bodo/Glimt (Aleesami 42)
Aleesami, who was at fault for gifting possession to Fabio Silva for Dortmund’s opener, makes up for his error by nodding a fine header past Kobel. It was a clever short corner routine that set up the cross from the left wing.
Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Newcastle
37 min: Newcastle are struggling in Germany. Leverkusen look dangerous with Schick dropping deep and Tillman and Poku running beyond. They also look dependable with their back three, with Quansah on the right of a 3-5-2 formation.
Juventus 0-0 Pafos
34 min: Pafos hit the post! It’s the visitors that look far more dangerous here, with the ball breaking to Anderson on the edge of Juve’s box. The Brazilian curls a low finish that hits the outside of Di Gregorio left-hand post.
Orsic is a player. Forget the Southampton spel and remember when he scored a hat-trick to knock José Mourinho’s Spurs out of the Europa League with Dinamo Zagreb.
Club Brugge 0-1 Arsenal
31 min: Arsenal pushing for a second. From a set piece, there’s a scramble in the Club Brugge box with Gyökeres lurking. The home side hack it away.
Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Bodo/Glimt
28 min: What a career path this is for Fabio Silva. His agent is doing God’s work.

GOAL! Club Brugge 0-1 Arsenal (Madueke 25)
WHAT. A. GOAL. This is special from Madueke, who rolls his marker on the half-way line, explodes into the space in front of Club Brugge’s defence, rides a couple of challenges and then pings a shot right into the top corner from 25 yards out! Wow, what a piece of play, the ball kissing the underside of the bar as it zinged into the net.

Arsenal hit the post!
Club Brugge 0-0 Arsenal
21 min: Latching onto a loose ball from a set piece, Lewis-Skelly inadvertently drags a shot straight into the path of Hincapié. The Ecuadorian sticks a foot out and diverts the ball onto the post, but it bounces away.
GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Bodo/Glimt (Brandt 18)
Fabio Silva, formerly of Rangers and Wolves, nips in to steal the ball on the half-way line and beelines for the Bodo/Glimt goal. A clever reverse pass finds Brandt and the German international lashes a shot inside the near post!
Club Brugge 0-0 Arsenal
15 min: This will not be an easy match for Arsenal at Brugge, who drew 3-3 with Barcelona last month. The Gunners are enjoying plenty of possession, just as Barça did, but Brugge don’t mind playing on the counter attack and have plenty of pace up top. Particularly with Carlos Forbs, who made his debut for Portugal last month.
“Arsenal don’t have an injury crisis up front, clearly,” emails Russell Eberts. “But the fact that we’re starting Christian Nørgaard at CB speaks for itself in terms of defensive injuries. I don’t think anyone could have anticipated that happening a few weeks ago.”
GOAL! Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Newcastle (Bruno Guimarães og, 12)
Terrible defending from Newcastle! Leverkusen swing a corner deep to the back post where Andrich has pretty much a free header, which cannons off the arse of Bruno Guimarães and over the line. Own goal. Ouch.
Updated
Benfica 0-0 Napoli
10 min: The home side so nearly take the lead. A delicious backheel from Aursnes sends Sudakov clean through on goal, but Milinkovic-Savic stands tall to save, before Benfica recycling the ball and Aursnes sending another effort wide.
Juventus 0-0 Pafos
7 min: Pafos nearly take the lead in Turin! Bruno Felipe gets free down the right wing for the Cypriot side, crosses low into the box. The ball pinballs around the area, zinging off Cambiaso’s knee and forcing Di Gregorio into a point-blank save!
Club Brugge 0-0 Arsenal
5 min: In Belgium, Martin Odegaard has tried his luck from range, with van den Heuvel palming it away. I thought Odegaard looked quite good against Villa at the weekend, despite the defeat.
Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Newcastle
3 min: It’s a brilliant atmosphere in Germany. The home crowd are buzzing. These are two teams that both like to press high, so I wonder if the match will be high-octane.

Peeeeeeeeep!
And we’re off. Two Bellinghams in action tonight, by the way, for Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, of course.
Around the continent, the teams are out! Newcastle are wearing that dreadful green away kit at Leverkusen, which I can’t really get behind.
The two early (5.45pm GMT) kick-offs have now finished and they were both absolute corkers, by the look of it:
Qarabag 2-4 Ajax
Ajax, who started the match on zero points, scored three times in the final 11 minutes to seal a stunning comeback at Qarabag, with Football Manager wonderkid Oscar Gloukh netting twice.
Villarreal 2-3 FC Copenhagen
The Spanish side, also struggling in the league phase this year, twice got themselves back on level terms but conceded a last-minute goal in defeat. Andreas Cornelius, formerly of Cardiff City, got the goal for the Danes.
Real Madrid v Manchester City also kicks off at 8pm GMT. You can follow minute-by-minute updates, with Scott Murray, right here.

Remarkable that Arteta can talk of an injury crisis, when he has that XI and Saka, Gabriel Jesus, Eze, Nwaneri, and Calafiori all on the bench.
By the way, if Gabriel Jesus does play tonight, it would be his first minutes since 12 January, a 1-1 draw against Manchester United, when he suffered a knee injury.

Paphos’ club badge – which depicts the classic figure of the Cypriot hero Evagoras Pallikarides, a poet and revolutionary who was active during the anti-colonial 1955–1959 campaign against British rule – also sees them qualify for a place on this list!
It’s a great piece. I had no idea that Bournemouth’s badge is not just a stylistic masterpiece but depicts somebody called Dickie Dowsett, “who played for the club between 1957 and 1962 and apparently scored a brilliant diving header against Aston Villa which is the inspiration for the badge.”
Updated
Paphos are making quite the impression in their first ever season in the Champions League proper. A home win over Villarreal and draws against Kairat and Monaco leave the Cypriot side on 25th place on five points, one berth below tonight’s opponents Juventus.
They also have 38-year-old David Luiz – yes, THE David Luiz – and the Brazilian scored a header for the ages in the last round against Monaco to help his new side to a 2-2 draw. Shades of Didier Drogba in the 2012 final in Luiz’s header, his first goal in the Champions League in eight years!

Newcastle United, meanwhile, travel to Germany tonight to play Bayer Leverkusen, who slumped to a 2-0 defeat at lowly Augsburg at the weekend.
Here’s Louise Taylor’s preview on Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade, who returns to his homeland tonight of course.
Club Brugge, meanwhile, sacked manager Nicky Hayen just two days ago – following the weekend’s defeat to St Truiden – and immediately announced his replacement in Ivan Leko from KAA Gent, who only found out that they had lost their Croatian manager when they read it in the media!
The following passage is from Reuters (yesterday):
Club Brugge captain Hans Vanaken said the players had learned of the managerial change after training on Monday. “A surprise for the squad,” he told a press conference on Tuesday. “Nobody expected that. There wasn’t really a reason or anything we thought was a reason. Look, the board has made a decision and it’s up to the players to accept that. We know that in football, tough decisions are made sometimes. Firing a coach is always unpleasant. Secretly, we’re all convinced that things could have got better in the coming months.”
Vanaken played with Leko when he first started out and also worked under him in Leko’s previous spell at Brugge from 2017-19. “Ivan is a completely different personality than Nicky, he has a bit more fire in him,” added Vanaken. “That’s not to say one is better than the other, but in the past, we clicked.”
Oh, and here’s a piece we did on Nicky Haden back in January, before Club Brugge’s trip to Manchester City. I don’t think he will be going back to the Welsh Premier League.
Team news is yet to surface. Here’s what Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had to say before his side’s clash with Club Brugge. Declan Rice is ill, while Leandro Trossard, William Saliba, Cristhian Mosquera, Kai Havertz, Max Dowman and Gabriel Magalhães are all sidelined.
And here’s the song that I immediately thought of when I read that headline. A wonderfully 90s tune by Soccer Mommy.
Preamble
Hello world and welcome to this Champions League clockwatch.
As Flight of the Conchords once sang, it’s business time. After today’s matches, there will be just two rounds of matches remaining in the league phase, so time is running out for teams to make the top eight automatic qualification spots or the other places (nine-24) for the play-off round to reach the knockouts.
Yes, many eyes will be on Real Madrid v Manchester City, a blockbuster tie if ever there was one, but the six other 8pm GMT matches have plenty at stake.
Last year, 11 points was enough to reach the play-offs and 16 points enough to make the top eight, so that is a rough guide for what this year’s hopefuls will be trying to achieve. Here is the current table, which is updated with the live ongoing early kick-offs (5.45pm GMT) tonight. Currently the half-time scores are Qarabag 1-1 Ajax and Villarreal 0-1 FC Copenhagen, so those are reflected below as if they are results.
