Thank you for joining me for this entertaining draw. Arsenal remain in third after a frustrating afternoon, while Manchester United stay in fourth but they will feel as though they have earned a point after going down to 10 players. You can catch up on all the action in the report below. We will be back tomorrow with a WSL clockwatch and there is plenty of men’s football action to get your teeth into this afternoon. Have a good rest of your Saturday.
Here is our tracker of all of the moves in the window so far:
Our latest women’s football newsletter is focused on Manchester United’s good business this transfer window so far. Have a read:
There are five WSL matches being played tomorrow and here is the fixture list, all times are in GMT:
Chelsea v West Ham, 12pm
Tottenham v Leicester, 12pm
Aston Villa v Brighton, 12pm
Manchester City v Everton, 12pm
Liverpool v London City Lionesses, 2.30pm
Well, if Manchester City were to win tomorrow then, with 10 games to go you’d have to say Arsenal and Manchester United would realistically be out of the title race. The gap would feel too big. This is a frustrating result for them both, especially Arsenal on home turf.
Manchester United has just one shot on target, that early chance from Fridolina Rolfo. Arsenal had six on target nut stats mean nothing if you can’t hit the back of the net. The result means Arsenal stay in third and United remain in fourth.
The Emirates were in full voice urging their team to find a winner and as the full-time whistle blew the stadium fell to silence. The first time Arsenal have failed to score at home in the WSL under Slegers. A disappointing afternoon for Arsenal, while United may be a little relieved to come away with a point.
Updated
Full time: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
Manchester United may have gone down to 10 players with Jayde Riviere given a second yellow card in the second 45 but they come away with a point as Arsenal fail to make the most of being a player up. They will rue the chances they missed in the first half where they had all of the momentum but United’s defenders must be given their flowers for their performance.
Updated
90 + 6 min: The Arsenal crowd get in full voice as Pelova gets in a great position and she pops a shot in but Tullis-Joyce saves well again.
90 + 4 min: Just as I write that about no attacking threat, the visitors get up the other end. It looked like they were just trying to hold up the ball but Arsenal have won it back and Holmberg peels free. She passes to Blackstenius whose shot is blocked by Janssen, who has been fantastic this afternoon.
90 + 3 min: This is what happens if that Tullis-Joyce injury was actually a timeout. Yes getting messages onto the pitch is important but it also gives Arsenal more time now to score with the visitors having absolutely no attacking threat in the last 10 minutes.
90 + 1 min: Caldentey stands over the free kick but it smacks the United wall. It comes into the box again and it is absolute chaos as United manage to bundle it clear. there will be seven minutes added.
90 min: Zigiotti gives away a free kick in a danger area as she fouls McCabe. Before it is taken Catley is replaced by Wubben-Moy.
89 min: Arsenal continue to knock on the door and the captain Little is found outside of the box. She takes a shot but it is over the bar, however it takes a touch from Miyazawa and so we have a corner. It’s popped into the area and Tullis-Joyce plucks it out of the air.
88 min: United have responded really well to going down to 10 players. Yes they haven’t found a goal themselves but they have managed to contain Arsenal. They have more work to do though as they concede another corner. Caldentey sends it in but it is dealt with initially. It continues to be popped into the area but no player can find the back of the net.
86 min: Pelova is right on the action as she pops it into the box but Blackstenius’ shot is deflected out by Janssen, corner to come. McCabe sends it in and it goes out of play with Williamson not able to keep it on.
84 min: Arsenal are making more changes with Holmberg and Pelova on for Mead and Fox. It is Holmberg’s debut for the Gunners. United make another change too with Park off for Naalsund.
82 min: United break but Malard gives away the ball cheaply, these chances will be far and few between for the visitors now and they need to capitalise when they have them.
81 min: Foord is fed the ball in the box but she can’t weave passed the United defenders who do a good job.
79 min: Caldentey send it in but Tullis-Joyce punches clear. It comes back to the Spanish international but her cross has too much on it and it’s out for a goal kick. Arsenal fans boo and then cheer as Tullis-Joyce receives a yellow card for time wasting.
77 min: Fragmented play ensues between both teams but it is Arsenal who have the next chance as Blackstenius crosses it in but Russo can’t get to it but they do win a corner.
75 min: Tullis-Joyce has been alive to everything Arsenal has thrown at her this afternoon. This time they build into the box and Blackstenius has a flick towards goal but the keeper is there to collect.
74 min: Sometimes teams react really well to going down to 10 and United have done exactly that with Miyazawa having a shot but it is blocked.
72 min: Oh gosh, United are making a change and Awujo is off for Lundkvist. It is in reaction to the card for an attacking switch but it must hurt to be subbed after starting on the bench.
71 min: Russo receives the ball in the area and has a great turn but United’s defenders swarm and she can’t get a shot away. It comes back in and it’s tapped goalwards but Sandberg blocks and Tullis-Joyce collects.
69 min: 37,627 at the Emirates, Arsenal can only be applauded for how they have grown their crowds over the past few seasons. On the pitch Tullie-Joyce is back to her feet and I think Skinner has change toe a 4-4-1 in reaction to the red card.
67 min: Arsenal did not need a helping hand, United had started to thwart the dominance of Arsenal and now all of that hard work may be dashed. Tullis-Joyce is down once again, boos come down from the stands as they believe it’s a tactical timeout.
Riviere has nothing to argue about there. She was rightly on a yellow card and she absolutely ploughs into Foord. A silly challenge.
Red card: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United (Riviere, 66)
Riviere is off for a second yellow.
Updated
64 min: Two changes for Arsenal with Smith and Maanum off for Foord and Blackstenius. Not a bad couple of players to bring on.
63 min: If Arsenal cannot find a way through in this game they will rue all of the missed chances in that first half. They do still have the upper hand here but they aren’t as free flowing as they were in the first 45.
62 min: Schuller is a player who can create magic and that is exactly what United need. They haven’t looked dominant since the opening five minutes.
61 min: Fox does so well to keep a play alive but it looks like she is fouled by Sandberg but it isn’t given as one by the referee. Before the goal kick Schuller and Awujocomes on for Terlandand and Rolfo. Schuller is one for her debut.
59 min: The hosts still have the slight edge in this one and they win another corner. Smith looks in some discomfort but she is okay to continue. Mead is over the set piece and the delivery is a good one, Park clears and the chance is gone for now. It comes back in but Tullis-Joyce collects.
Updated
57 min: United are preparing two changes with one of them coming in the club’s star signed in Schuller.
55 min: A huge appeal for a penalty from the stands as Smith hits the deck, the players aren’t really putting their hands up and on the replay you can see why. It would have been a very soft penalty.
54 min: Little lifts the ball into the box with Fox lingering in the box but Sandberg and Tullis-Joyce combine well to quell the danger.
53 min: The ball is really going this way, that way, forward and back so far in this second 45. Neither team are really taking a hold of the game, a lot of individual errors.
51 min: Torran has got involved in our traitors discussion:
Afternoon from the Emirates.
I’m a very frustrated United fan at present, we’ll leave it at that.
In terms of footballers who’d be good in the Traitors, I can’t help but feel like Le Tissier would be quite good. Quiet, self-assured, innocent-seeming, but it she was a traitor she is very capable of lethality where required (we’ve all seen those body blocks).
The player who would be least good? Ella Toone. The woman is physically incapable of hiding her emotions.
Ironically Le Tissier would be a good traitor, despite being such a good faithful to United. And I cannot help but agree about Toone but she would make some great TV. Back to the pitch and possession is being exchanged back and forth.
49 min: There are no changes for either side at the break and the game has started again as it let off in the second half. United look a little dangerous on the ball but they keep losing it quickly.
47 min: Charles Antaki has emailed:
Georgia Stanway to Arsenal makes all kinds of sense – Kim Little isn’t getting any younger, and while Kyra CooneyCross and Victoria Pelova are obviously good, and getting better, Stanway is an immediate injection of authority and creativity into the middle of the pitch. Also, it keeps her out of Chelsea’s hands.
It does seems like the Gunners are the most likely destination for Stanway. I also could not see her signing for Chelsea at all, if Arsenal were in the race or not.
Back underway: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
Can someone find a goal? We are about to find out…
The big news in women’s football today is that Georgia Stanway will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season. It is Arsenal who are the frontrunners for the England international’s signature. All of the details here:
Half-time: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
Well Arsenal may be on top in terms of possession and pressure but the deadlock remains. Fridolina Rolfo and Olivia Smith have had the two best shots so far but two bits of great goalkeeper but both shotstoppers maintain their clean sheets so far.
45 + 6 min: Mead and McCabe stand over the free kick ball and it is the Republic of Ireland international who takes it. It’s a good delivery and Catley almost turns it goalward but it’s clear. It comes back in and Russo has a shot but it’s saved.
Updated
45 + 5 min: Maanum is challenged and it takes her a while to get back to her feet but play continues, the Sweden international eventually okay to play on. Arsenal pile on the pressure and Riviere gives away a free kick for a foul on Smith on the edge of the box.
45 + 3 min: Zigiotti fouls Catley and Arsenal have a free kick, in their own half though and so they will have to build from far out. They take it but they are forced all the way back to Borbe, who has not been called into action since that early chance from Rolfo.
45 + 1 min: There will be six minutes added, not surprising with the amount of medical interventions in this first half.
45 min: That was the chance for Arsenal. A pass is missed by Sandberg and finds Mead, she crosses in but Maanum’s effort is over the bar.
43 min: United are showing their frustration with and without the ball at the moment. They are forcing passes and giving away cheap fouls after not having momentum for the past 30 minutes.
41 min: Here Arsenal come again and they get it into the box. It bounces around multiple players but none of them can get a shot away.
40 min: Fox returns to the pitch as United play it out of the back. Possession exchanges hands and the deadlock remains.
38 min: Fox goes to the sideline as is protocol now with injuries but it seems the USWNT star will be okay to continue.
37 min: Fox is now receiving some treatment, it looks like a hip issue.
35 min: Don’t forget to get in touch with your women’s football traitor shouts, I’d love to hear your thoughts. On pitch, United are trying to form an attack but Arsenal continue to be impressive.
33 min: Huddles are made and Skinner is very animated as he speaks to his squad while Tullis-Joyce receives treatment. She is okay to continue and we get back underway. There is also applause at the Emirates for Cooney-Cross in the 32 minute as that is her shirt number to show their support for her mum’s cancer diagnosis.
Updated
32 min: Arsenal want a free kick for a tackle on Smith, it isn’t given but then play is stopped as she remains on the floor. She holds her shoulder but she is quickly back to her feet. Tullis-Joyce now is on the deck, potentially a tactical injury there so managers can get messages on pitch.
30 min: It feels like a matter of time before Arsenal score in this game, they have responded so well to United’s early pressure. The visitors have not thrown an attacking punch in over 10 minutes.
29 min: Mead, who is having a great game, gets a great pass into the box but Russo is crowded off of the ball and United clear the danger once again.
27 min: Even the commentators thought that had gone in, that is how close the Arsenal captain came to opening the scoring.
26 min: Smith wins another corner and it feels the tide really has turned in this game towards the hosts. They take it short and it eventually comes into the box, Little takes a punt but it hits the side netting.
Updated
25 min: Arsenal win another corner and McCabe will be the taker this time. The delivery is good and it scrambles in the box and is cleared. It comes back in but United do enough to keep it out.
23 min: What a huge save from Tullis-Joyce, it comes from an amazing cross from Russo and Smith gets a shot away but the American saves really well. Two great bits of goalkeeping at both ends of the pitch so far in this one.
21 min: Marc Skinner just gave Julia Zigiotti Olme some tactical instructions and she has now relayed them to the rest of the Manchester United team, in a huddle
21 min: As predicted Catley is okay to continue and the game between to huge rivals gets back underway.
20 min: It looks as though Catley clashed heads with Janssen and she is receiving some treatment. She is expected to remain on the pitch though.
19 min: Mead is over the set piece and her delivery is a good one but it’s headed clear. Then play is stopped as Catley has stayed down with and injury.
18 min: Janssen clears a good cross by Mead but Arsenal continue to push and Smith wins a corner.
17 min: The Gunners are getting more joy now but they are still yet to really trouble Tullis-Joyce. The latest effort is way over the bar by Caldentey.
16 min: Riviere does really well to win a free kick as Russo goes on the hunt for the ball to relieve from pressure that has started to build on the visitors.
14 min: The game has just a bit of a lull with the majority being played in the midfield. Arsenal are really struggling to put together a meaningful attack but they pour forward again here and Maanum’s shot is blocked by Le Tissier.
12 min: There has also been a huge showing of support for Arsenal star Kyra Cooney-Cross at the Emirates today as she is back in Australia supporting her mother Jess who has been diagnosed with cancer. Our thoughts are with her too at this difficult time.
11 min: Arsenal’s defence is really being tested and it is holding just about but United are looking really good so far. Just one more clinical touch is needed from the visitors and they can take advantage of this pressure.
9 min: It is all United in these last five minutes and they keep knocking on the door but that Rolfo chance is the closest they have come to scoring the first goal in this battle.
7 min: Arsenal are poor at the back again and Rolfo pounces, she is tackled on the edge of the box and she appeals for a free kick but it is not given.
6 min: Oh my word, Arsenal struggle to get it out of the box with United continually applying pressure and Rolfo eventually gets a shot in but Borbe makes a cracking save to keep them out.
5 min: United are now having a brighter spell with the ball at their feet but neither side are yet to create a clear cut chance.
3 min: A bright start for Arsenal as they have the majority of possession. Mead was lurking on the edge of the box but Miyazawa managed to end the danger.
2 min: United have the best away record in the league but it’s a different game travelling to the Emirates so we will see if they can keep that up today. Both teams easing into this fixture.
Kick-off: Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
Here we go.
In the UK the reality TV show The Traitors has returned to screens and it got me thinking about who would make a good traitor in the WSL. My first thought was Alex Greenwood, purely because she has played for Everton, Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd. What are your thoughts? Email me and let me know.
Aston Villa are set to sign the France midfielder Oriane Jean-François from Chelsea for £450,000, the Guardian understands, in what will be a club-record fee for a sale by the London side.
Jenna Nighswonger’s loan move to Aston Villa from Arsenal was announced this morning but what is interesting is that the contract includes a deal to buy. The defender signed for the Gunners in the summer but has struggled to break into the first team.
Arsenal announced huge news in this transfer window earlier this week but it did not concern a player. The manager Renée Slegers signed a new deal which runs until 2029, a massively important bit of business for the Gunners to do:
Let’s have a bit of transfer news now shall we? The rumour mill is in overdrive after Georgia Stanway announced she would be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season this morning. The England international has been linked with Arsenal. Her move has not been confirmed and so is not in our interactive yet but you can catch up with all of the other moves:
There are around 37,000 fans expected here at a crisp-feeling Emirates Stadium today, which has quickly started to feel like a normal turnout for Renée Slegers’ team’s home games, in contrast to women’s football around the rest of Europe. Arsenal are averaging just over 36,000 for home games this term, while nobody else in the continent is averaging more than four figures. There is a buzz around the ground despite the chill in the air. There is also a feeling that this is a hugely significant game. Neither side can afford to lose, if they have any hope of catching the leaders Manchester City, and equally, any losing side today would lose ground on the other in the race for the Champions League places. In light of City and Chelsea’s strength at present, it is likely that one of these two sides meeting today will miss out on Europe, so this is a key battle.
Updated
The fixture is not only a big game for Manchester United as they could move into third but it is also manager Marc Skinner’s 100th game in charge of the club.
The 42-year-old was named boss in 2021 and has brought the club their first major trophy with the FA Cup in 2024
Manchester United manager Marc Skinner said on Arsenal:
It’s always who can take the big moments.
We’re going to maximise what we can. We’ve got to play our game effectively as what we’re really good at, but also understand that they can create magic moments and so can we.
Arsenal manager Renée Slegers has said on United:
We expect them to come out and be aggressive and apply themselves as they want to. Of course we see that they pride themselves on their defensive game, their intensity, their aggression.
They have specific qualities, they’ve added to their squad as well. So we’ll see how they start and finish the game tomorrow. We’ll have to be prepared for different scenarios, because depending on the personnel they might want to play, those players play to their strengths.
Leah Williamson makes her first league start of the season, having returned from injury shortly before Christmas. There are not many surprises in either of the starting sides. The visitors have left their debutants Hanna Lundkvist and Lea Schüller on the bench, which is also the case for Arsenal’s new signings, Smilla Holmberg.
Updated
The team news is in. There is good news for Arsenal fans as Leah Williamson starts as she continues to build minutes following her injury post-Euros. Anneke Borbe is in goal too with Daphne van Domselaar still sidelined.
Arsenal: Borbe, Fox, Williamson, Catley, McCabe, Little, Caldentey, Maanum, Mead, Smith, Russo.
Bench: Williams, Wubben-Moy, Codina, Hinds, Holmberg, Harwood, Pelova, Foord, Blackstenius
Manchester United’s two big signings Lea Schüller and Hanna Lundkvist will have to wait for their debut as they both start on the bench.
Man Utd: Tullis-Joyce, Sandberg, Le Tissier, Park, Malard, Terland, Rolfo, Riviere, Janssen, Zigiotti, Hinata.
Bench: Middleton-Patel, Rendell, Lundkvist, Turner, Awujo, Naalsund, Drury, Griffiths, Schuller
Preamble
Hello and welcome to the return of the Women’s Super League. The top-flight took a Christmas break but it is back with a bang with Arsenal v Manchester United.
It is third and fourth in the table going up against one another and it could have further implications for whoever potentially loses as Tottenham are just two and one points behind both teams respectively. Spurs play Leicester tomorrow and could climb the table by the end of the weekend.
We will be hearing the team news for today’s match shortly but one player who will definitely not be playing for Arsenal is Jenna Nighswonger. The American defender confirmed her loan move to Aston Villa this morning.
Manchester United, meanwhile, may have some new faces in their team after some shrewd transfer business so far. One such star is Lea Schüller who could be the difference this afternoon.
Kick-off is coming at 12.30pm GMT so stay tuned for all the build-up for this huge clash.
